    FATHERS OF THE 4

    th

    COUNCIL (Tit. 3, 8-15) 13

    th

    July 2014

Dear brethren, today our Church commemorates the Fathers who convened the

Fourth Ecumenical Council in the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Euphemia in

Chalcedon. This gathering took place in 451 to condemn the heresy of

monophysitism. This heresy says that in the person Christ is one divine nature only,

that is, Christ was simply an apparition of God here on earth in the form of a man.

Therefore this heresy says that Christ as God did not take on human nature, but just

human appearance. Such an interpretation denies that God became man and

without this there is no salvation for man. However, the Church through the mouths

of the Holy Fathers proclaims the truth, God took on human nature together with His

own divine nature, and so in Christ the two natures, human and divine, exist in

hypostasis in one person. This is the Word of God incarnate, the second Person of

the Holy Trinity, the only-begotten Son of God who became human. This is Jesus

Christ our Lord. Each year on the 11thof July our Church commemorates the Fourth

Ecumenical Council. What did they achieve? In this council the Holy Fathers

confirmed the dogmatic teaching that Jesus Christ had two natures, He was perfect

man and perfect God. These two natures existed in the one person in a hypostatic

state, that is they were united without change, without mixture and indivisible. When

the Synod disbanded this was recorded and signed. However there were still

heretics that clung onto their own false formulation, they asked that both texts, their

own and that of the Synod, be placed on the chest of the Saint Euphemia s relics

and the tomb sealed, the Saint would reveal the truth. The Fathers all agreed and

so the tomb was opened, the texts placed on the Saint s chest and then the tomb

resealed. When Saint Euphemias tomb was reopened the volume containing the

Orthodox text was in the lap of the Saint and the heretic text was under her feet.

Saint Euphemia through this miracle validated the Christological teaching for the two

natures of Jesus Christ. The Synaxario of July 11th retells these wonderful events

and the hymnology shows the jubilation of the Orthodox people for the clarity of this

teaching that leads to salvation through the incarnation of our Holy God.

This is a faithful saying, that those who have believed in faith should be careful

    to maintain good works.

Together with the historical events of the Fourth Ecumenical Synod, we hear in

todays Apostolic reading words that talk of faith and good works. Brothers and

sisters, faith and good works are the cornerstones of Christian progress for the

faithful. Faith alone cannot save. likewise good works on their own cannot save.

But proof of faith is action, and actions are done through faith James the brother of

our Lord says: For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is

dead also.(James 2: 26). If good works remain the actions of a sensitive soul, and

faith remains only an intellectual activity, without any reference or basis in the life of

Christ, then faith remains an ideology and good works acts of humanitarianism.

The Word of God is trustworthy and contains divine power. It is the message

addressed to all people with the aim of brining the thoughts of mankind with the will

of God. The Word is the living Gods messenger, directing mankind towards

salvation. The mystery of the Word, the Son of God, is the culmination of divine

majesty. Christ is the true path to salvation for every man. The word of the Gospel

is a power that fulfils a person when it is put into practice in our lives. Whoever

believes in Christ, whoever recognises and accepts Him, begins through Him, a

living relationship with God and a child of God. Whoever ignores and denies Him

remains in the darkness of this word and enters into deep condemnation.God

constantly talks to us through the Church, who listens to Him, who puts His words

into practice? Why is it that mankind does not listen to and pay attention to the

Word of God? Works are not perfected in the relief that they offer our suffering

brothers and sisters. Above this beneficial purpose is the cooperation achieved in

building the Body of Christ. Everybody, since Christ has redeemed us as we were

originally created, remain united in Christ, we are His, and we therefore have a duty

to do good works according to His will. These works cannot guarantee man

justification in front of God, nor do they bring any internal justification. The works

themselves are not a source of salvation, it is God s grace that creates the bridge to

salvation. Mankind cannot balance the two spiritual powers of faith and works.

Works are overestimated since these administer to human need. Man wants to see

works, action in order to believe. As essential as good works are, so is faith. Good

works are the oil in a lamp and faith is the wick, both are needed for light. Where

there is strong faith, there is the fruition of virtues. The Apostle James says that

Abraham was vindicated by his good works and obedience to God: Do you see that

faith was working together with his works and by works faith was made perfect?

(James 2.22). This means that faith and works are interrelated. Faith works together

to build virtue and virtue is fuels and fulfils faith.Christians are not permitted to

remain fruitlessthat is, without works of love. Society suffers. People crave love.

Our suffering brethren are looking for love. How then, can we remain indifferent to

their pain, their needs, and their trials? To actively love our fellow man is to sacrifice

something of ourselves to ease his suffering him. This is light of love that will dispel

the darkness is what our brothers and sisters are looking for. It is, therefore,

necessary from the perspective of faith for us to put into practice works of love. Love

is the most powerful sermon. This is how the saints of our Church and lived became

Gospels Christ. May our good works be the lights that guide for man. This way my

brother others will see our good works and attempt to emulate us.

Third point was when the only child of the widow woman got sick and die. Then the

Prophet prayed and resurrected the child. Fourth great sign which showed by

Prophet Elijah, were when he came and prayed so fire come down from the sky.

With a shout of King Ahab gathered four hundred pagans pseudo-priest, employed

by Jezebel. Then the Prophet Elijah challenged them to a contest. He told them toput on the altar wood and the animal for sacrifice, and the pseudo-priest started

running around and screaming all day begging the false god Baal, to bring fire And

there was not voice and there was not audition. Then the Prophet said to them

Now I will offer my sacrifice. He made his altar, and pored over the wood three

times with water and then prayed. Then fell fire from heaven and burned the entire

altar. After this point, the people caught all four hundred pseudo-priests, and

Prophet Elijah slaughtered everyone as it was agreed. Then Jezebel, enraged,

chased the Prophet, and he left high in Horeb, where five hundred years before,

Moses heard the voice of God and saw the bush on fire and not be burned. There

the prophet Elijah hiding in a cave, and God taught him a great lesson: Climb high

on the top, and you will see God. It passed strong wind, earthquake, Fire will pass

and a light and cool breezes. God will neither be in the storm nor the earthquake nor

in the fire, but in the mellow breeze. "The Prophet Elijah was the man, who was

burning with entire divine zeal. His life and fiery ascension in the sky on a fiery

chariot. Dear brethren, "Elijah lives. He Lives and woe to the current pseudo-priests

and pseudo- bishops, and all those evil people who are mocking the true God.
