ABSTRACT The vasovagal reaction is the most characteristic complication that can occur to a whole blood donor. Its frequency comes up to 1 % of the total number of blood donors. Although the vasovagal reaction itself is not very dangerous, the fall that comes after the loss of consciousness, may lead to serious injuries. It is widely known that this reaction may occur either before or during the blood donation. It can also appear many hours after the blood donation. As a result, all members of the staff must take serious measures in order to minimize the frequency of this reaction and make sure that the blood donors are completely safe. The same is important for its treatment, too. In this paper, is briefly described the vasovagal reaction and the factors that cause it. Afterwards, are fully described the appropriate measures to prevent as well as to treat this reaction when it occurs.

Key-words Vasovagal reaction, vasovagal reaction in blood donors.
