By the end of February many overseas students have come aboard for the new semester. Besides the intent of good academic achievement, many of them also carry the hope of integrating into the community as a permanent resident or citizen in Australia one day or even bringing over their parents/relatives here for family reunion. Financially, the Australia tertiary education and some local business sectors indeed rely on this influx of overseas spending power. Yet, the mainstream society seldom cares about this minority group of people on transit.

Even the Chinese immigrant community seldom gets in close encounter with these overseas students coming from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan, apart from providing them with charged services of catering, accommodation rental or other student support such as visa application. So most of time they belong to a group on their own, separated from their families, maybe working hard on part-time jobs, yet detached from the local communities.

In general, overseas students are not too mature and may not have good sense of responsibility; hence they are not very approachable. But some of them are keen to explore and build up relation during their brief stay in this country. When my daughter was doing her local degree course here over half of her classmates were overseas students mainly from China, she enjoyed a good relation with them and our home had hosted many of them as our visitors. Mingling with them also allowed me to broaden my horizon, and as such my daughter have extended friendship in places of Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.

We as migrants ourselves should care more about Chinese migrants around us as well as offer hospitality to these Chinese overseas students.
