Carmen Thyssen shows a selection of her private painting collection on the Costa Brava

Catalan and international painting from 1870 to 1970 will interact to show the relation between people and landscape. The exhibition ‘Landscapes of light, dream landscapes. From Gauguin to Delvaux’ kicks off the activities at the Espai Carmen Thyssen, in Sant Feliu de Guíxols Monastry.

A selection of one of the world’s most important private collections of painting will be on show this summer at Sant Feliu de Guíxols. A varied selection of 53 paintings from Catalan and international authors, belonging to Carman Thyssen’s private collection, will set a dialogue to display the evolution of painting between 1870 and 1970 and showing the interaction of people and landscape. The exhibition called ‘Paisatges de llum paisatges de Somni. De Gauguin a Delvaux’ (‘Landscapes of light, dream landscapes. From Guaguin to Delvaux’) will kick off the activities of the new exhibition space located in Sant Feliu de Guíxols Monestry, sponsored by the Thyssen Baroness. The ‘Espai Carmen Thyssen’ will host this temporary exhibition from July 7th to October 7th. At the exhibition’s presentation held on Thursday, Carmen Thyssen hoped this show will be the first of many in Sant

Feliu de Guíxols. In fact, the Baroness and Sant Feliu’s town hall are planning the creation of a permanent Thyssen Museum in this Catalan coastal town, where the Thyssen family has one of its residences. The project has been put on hold due to the current economic context, but both parts insisted in Thursday’s presentation that they have the intention to build the museum in the mid-term. Besides Sant Feliu’s projects, Carmen Thyssen said it would be “wonderful” to reach an agreement with Catalonia’s National Museum of Art (MNAC), located in Barcelona, to show part of her collection in the museum’s future enlargement. In addition, she said that selling paintings is not pleasant but that selling ‘The Lock’ by John Constable does not have an effect on the collection, as the picture was a bit “on its own”.

The economic crisis slowed down the opening of Sant Feliu’s Thyssen Museum in the Can Serra’s former factory, but a smaller space to host temporary exhibitions and show the paintings of the Thyssen collection has been opened. The first exhibition will be formed by 53 paintings, shown in 8 rooms of the recently created ‘Espai Carmen Thyssen’, sponsored by the Baroness.

HOW TO PREVENT A “SWIMMER´S EAR”Last summer I received a lot of questions regarding a swimmer´s-ear or an infection of the outer ear or ear canal (otitis externa).

An infection of the ear canal can also occur when you do not swim, but it is more likely when people do swim.

How is that possible?

Bacteria like a warm, humid climate. Well, in Spain it is warm, and if on top of that you add water or humidity on a regular basis in the ear canal, you get the ideal conditions for the bacteria to grow. It seems to occur more with people who use a swimming pool than with people who swim in the sea. Although the water of the pool may be cleaner, there is another reason for the occurence. Like I wrote before, bacteria like a warm, humid climate: the water of a pool is getting warmed up more quickly then for instance the water of the sea. On top of this a lot of times the swimming pool is close to the house so you can jump in and out of the water throughout the whole day. And so the ear canal stays humid and warm during the whole day.

An infection of the ear canal normally starts with itching and pain, but when the infection spreads, you can get a fever. If the skin in the ear canal gets swollen, it can get very painful, because there is no room for the swollen skin.

Treatment consists of painkillers, eardrops with antibiotics, and if it is a more severe infection also antibiotics. It is better not to buy something by yourself at the

pharmacist, but let the physician assess what medication might be best. For instance, not all medication can be used in case of a perforation of the eardrum. Always go to see a physician when you have diabetes or another condition which makes you more sensitive to infections, and also in case you get sick, have got a fever, or much pain.

Tips to prevent a swimmer´s ear:

ear wax yourself, normally the conduct cleans itself and by the use of cotton swabs you push the wax into the ear. Infections can start easily behind the ear wax because the water stays behind.

scratch with objects in your ear. Little wounds increase the risk of an infection.

drain, for instance by laying on one side.

try to dry the ear canal so it does not stay humid. this is easily done using a hairdryer with low or medium heat.

to prevent swimmer´s ear. (of course it can be recommended for other reasons). Sometimes the earplugs are too tight and can cause skin irritation. Furthermore the bacteria can nestle on the earplugs and cause new infections.

Empordà Designation of Origin sells more than four million bottles of wine in a year for the first timeEmpordà Designation of Origin has, for the first time, sold more than four million bottles of wine in a year. This amount represents an increase of 5% compared to 2010 and a rise of 18% on the last four years. The president of the wine designation, Josep Blanch, said that this “achievement” proves that Empordà DO has consolidated because since its beginnings, it has been growing year by year in a “consistent” way. Red wine is the most popular variety with 2.3 million units. The main Empordà wine market is the Girona region, where 34% of the bottles are sold. The “big challenge” of the Empordà wineries is still Barcelona. “It should be our main market, but it’s difficult to enter” he affirmed.

Empordà Designation of Origin wineries have gone from selling 3.4 million bottles in 2008 to 4,166,559 units in 2011, an increase of 18% despite the crisis.

The biggest-selling wine variety and the one which has experienced a major increase compared to 2008 has been red wine, which grew from 1.8 million to 2.3 million units last year. Regarding the other varieties, 1.2 million units of white wine have been sold, 300,000 more than in 2008. Finally, rose wine kept its sales figures at 500,000 bottles.

A project from Girona wins international award for designing a sustainable home in Alaska

An architectural project drawn up by teachers, ex-teachers and students at the University of Girona got the third prize in the ‘Living Aleutian Design Competition’, one of the most prestigious sustainability competitions of the world. The test consisted in making a house of 150 square meters which was 100% sustainable in Alaska, a place that must stand extreme weather. The housing design is characterized by the fact that, once its life cycle ends, it can be dismantled piece by piece, and returned to the land in its original state. In addition, the building is wrapped around the entire perimeter of 20 cm of insulation made with wood derivatives.

Being capable of designing a comfortable and efficient housing in Alaska, where there

are one of the most adverse climates in the world, means that you are able to make others with the same characteristics “in all other parts of the world.” That is the way one of the directors of the organisations convening the competition, Dan Duane, assessed the ability of the authors of the winning projects.

The fundamental idea of the Girona project is the physical separation between the dwelling itself and the part needed to be energetically self-sufficient. The house has 150 square meters, three bedrooms, a storage room, a bathroom, a kitchen and a lounge. It has low impact on the terrain, placing the building high in order to respect the natural course of the local flora and fauna.

Fini les collations pour les prisonniers de Catalogne

La Catalogne va cesser d’offrir des en-cas aux prisonniers le soir dans le cadre du plan de rigueur destiné à réduire les déficits publics.

Une porte-parole du ministère de la Justice de la Catalogne, Ramón Parés a précisé mercredi que les détenus ne re-cevraient plus de fruit ou de pâtisserie. Les centres de détention pour mineurs seront épargnés par la mesure.

Les prisonniers continueront à bénéfi-cier de trois repas par jour, et les por-tions ne seront pas réduites.

Parmi les autres mesures prévues, le prix des repas servis au personnel péni-tentiaire va être doublé à six euros.

Ces mesures sont destinées à économi-ser environ deux millions d’euros par an.

Le trafic de drogues profite aux banques occidentalesA qui profite le trafic de drogues en Colombie? Contre toute attente, et selon une étude de 2011 de l’université des Andes à Bogota, reprise par le Guardian le 2 juin 2012, lors de la publication de la version anglaise, le négoce de la cocaïne colombienne enrichit principalement les banques des Etats-Unis et d’Europe. Le journal britannique indique que c’est «la recherche la plus détaillée jamais réalisée sur l’économie de la drogue».

Seulement 2,6% des profits restent en Colombie

D’après les économistes Daniel Mejía et Alejandro Gaviria, seulement 2,6% de tout l’argent généré par la production et le trafic de cocaïne reste en Colombie. Alors que 97,4% des profits de la drogue sont partagés entre les narcotrafiquants et les banques européennes et états-uniennes.

L’étude Políticas antidroga en Colombia: éxitos, fracasos y extravíos (Ediciones Uniandes, 2011) (Politiques antidrogue en Colombie: Succès, échecs et les mauvais virages), se fonde notamment sur l’année 2008, où les économites ont découvert que sur 300 milliards de dollars provenant de la production de cocaïne, seulement 7,8 milliards sont restés en Colombie.

«Si des pays comme la Colombie pouvaient bénéficier économiquement du commerce de la drogue, il y aurait un certain sens dans tout cela, déclare Alejandro Gaviria. Au lieu de cela, nous payons le prix fort pour le profit de quelqu’un d’autre.»

L’hypocrisie des pays occidentaux

Selon les chercheurs, cette situation serait due à l’hypocrisie des pays «consommateurs» (Etats-Unis, Royaume-Uni et l’Espagne) qui sont plus déterminés à obtenir des résultats dans la lutte contre la drogue que de s’attaquer au blanchiment d’argent. «Ils se limitent à chasser les petits poissons, ou les maillons faibles de la chaîne, mais ils ne s’en prennent jamais aux systèmes financiers», affirme Daniel Mejía au Guardian.

Les mécanismes du blanchiment d’argent provenant de la drogue avaient déjà été mis en évidence par The Observer le 3 avril 2011. Notamment après une enquête montrant comment la banque américaine Wachovia (maintenant Wells Fargo) a permis de blanchir 376 millions de dollars provenant de la drogue mexicaine. Mais selon le Guardian, personne n’est allé en prison, et la banque ne risque plus rien aujourd’hui.

Le Roussillon, maillon faible des autoroutes

Le grand chantier de l’élargissement à 2 X 3 voies de la route européenne E15, traduite sous les latitudes nord-catalanes par l’autoroute française A9 et son prolongement espagnol AP-7, souffre d’un manque de coordination. En effet, la partie sud est officiellement terminée depuis le 23 juin 2012, après quatre ans de travaux entamés en novembre 2008, suivis en mai et juin 2012 d’un goudronnage général. De La Jonquera à Fornells de la Selva, soit de l’extrême nord et l’extrême sud de la province de Girona, la conduite en est devenue plus confortable. Pour les touristes venus de plus au Nord, l’été 2012 présente ainsi une autoroute large entre Lyon et Barcelone, à la seule exception du Roussillon, où la chaussée produit un effet de rétrécissement. Dans ce territoire, le calendrier des aménagements prévoit l’élargissement à 3 voies en juin 2013 à la hauteur de Perpignan, sur 17 km. Cette première échéance précédera l’élargissement entre Perpignan Sud - Le Boulou, fin 2016, puis la réalisation de la

portion Le Boulou-Le Perthus, en 2020.Infrastructures majeures au même titre que les ports, les aéroports et le TGV, les axes autoroutiers contribuent à la dynamique des territoires et à l’image d’envergure qu’ils dégagent. A ce titre, c’est encore au sud qu’un autre détail intervient, car la chaussée est désormais portée à 2 X 4 voies à la hauteur du périmètre efficace qui entoure Girona, de la commune de Vilademuls à celle de Fornells de la Selva. La capitale de la province prend ainsi des aires toulousains, bien que la déferlante de camions soit supérieure. Cette compétitivité sera complétée avant fin 2012 par l’ouverture des nouveaux accès autoroutiers «Girona Centre» et «Figueres Nord», ce dernier étant inexistant pour les véhicules remontant du Sud. A Fornells de la Selva, début 2013 sera inauguré un troisième accès sur cette autoroute, nommée «axe stratégique méditerranéen» par les économistes, qui privilégient une lecture liée au transport de marchandises.

Smartphones : fin des tarifs exorbitantsUne avancée européenne de nivellement des différentiels territoriaux est intervenue le 1er juillet 2012, dans le cadre de la législation «roaming 3». Celle-ci a fait disparaître les factures exorbitantes reçues par les usagers de l’Internet mobile sur smartphones lors de séjours dans un autre Etat européen que le leur. A l’échelle eurocatalane, cette mesure rapproche sobrement les Pyrénées-Orientales et la Catalogne du Sud, à l’identique de la monnaie unique ou de l’entrée en vigueur en 2013 des amendes routières européennes. En termes légaux, les nouvelles normes européennes sur le roaming, ou itinérance internationale, engagent tous les opérateurs téléphoniques a abaisser leurs prix de 90 % en cas de déplacements dans un pays européen différent du territoire de rattachement de l’abonné. Cette harmonisation doit permettre, selon la Commission européenne, une économie de 1000 euros annuels pour les personnes à mobilité européenne constante. Le prix maximum autorisé, de 70 centimes par mégabit consommé, sera réduit à 45 centimes au 1er juillet 2013 puis à 20 centimes au 1er juillet 2014.

Cette évolution met fin à des abus généralisés, illustrés depuis juillet 2009 par un coût de 4 à 6 euros par mégabit facturé à des Perpignanais de passage à Figueres ou à des habitants de Girona venus en Roussillon. En outre, depuis un téléphone portable de première génération, un appel émis depuis un appareil d’un pays donné ne pourra dépasser 29 centimes la minute en dehors dudit pays, tandis que les appels reçus lors d’un séjour à l’extérieur du territoire originel, mais toujours en Europe, ne pourront dépasser 8 centimes. A terme, la volonté de l’Union européenne réside dans la suppression des décalages internationaux, qui nuisent à la prise de conscience d’une communauté de vie et de consommation.

Raar maar waar, maar tegenwoordig De Spaanse regering wil 3,5 miljard euro bezuinigen met een reorganisatie van de overheidsinstellingen en het verlagen van de kosten. Ook wordt de btw verhoogd van 18 naar 21 procent. Dat heeft de Spaanse premier Mariano Rajoy gezegd in het Spaanse parlement.

De Europese Commissie ziet de aangekondigde maatregelen als een belangrijke stap bij het terugdringen van het begrotingstekort, aldus een woordvoerder in een eerste reactie.

Volgens Rajoy wordt het mes gezet in een groot aantal overheidsdiensten, de salarissen van bestuurders zoals burgemeesters, de werkgelegenheid bij lokale besturen en lokale publieke bedrijven. Daarbij worden spoorweg-, luchthaven- en havenbedrijven geprivatiseerd. De kerstbonus voor hogere ambtenaren wordt dit jaar afgeschaft, aldus Rajoy.

De premier gaf verder aan dat voordelen bij onroerendgoedbelastingen worden verwijderd. Verder worden de belastingen op energie voor bedrijven en consumenten verhoogd en gaan de accijnzen op tabak omhoog. De fiscale maatregelen moeten volgens Rajoy in de komende 2,5 jaar 65 miljard euro opleveren. De inkomstenbelasting gaat echter omlaag.

De Spaanse overheid gaat ook snijden in de uitkeringen voor nieuwe werklozen en in subsidies voor het

zoeken naar werk en subsidies voor gehandicapte mensen. De duur van een werkloosheidsuitkering blijft onveranderd. De Spaanse werkloosheid bedraagt ongeveer een kwart van de beroepsbevolking.

Spanje moet zijn overheidstekort volgens nieuwe afspraken die deze week met de andere eurolanden zijn gemaakt dit jaar terugdringen tot 6,3 procent van het bruto binnenlands product (bbp), in plaats van 5,3 procent zoals eerder werd afgesproken. Volgend jaar moet het gat krimpen tot 4,5 procent, om in 2014 uit te komen op 2,8 procent.

De eurolanden kwamen verder overeen dat de Spaanse bankensector eind juli 30 miljard noodsteun gaat ontvangen. In ruil voor die steun stemde Spanje in met strengere regels voor zijn banken.

‘Struikrovers’ teisteren zuiderse snelwegenVolgens de Franse gendarmerie zijn er deze zomer al tientallen toeristen overvallen door snelwegdieven. Ze dwingen chauffeurs via allerlei trucs naar de kant en bestelen ze.

Politiediensten en reisbijstandsorganisaties waarschuwen vakantiegangers die met de auto door Spanje of Frankrijk rijden voor dievenbendes die opereren langs autowegen.Een van de nieuwe trucs die ze gebruiken om nietsvermoedende automobilisten te doen stoppen, is vanaf een brug een ei op de voorruit gooien.

“De bestuurder die een ei tegen zijn ruit krijgt, probeert de smurrie weg te vegen met zijn ruitenwissers. Maar dat maakt het er alleen maar erger op, omdat het ei op die manier over de hele ruit wordt uitgesmeerd. Gevolg is dat hij niet anders kan dan zich aan de kant te zetten. Niet toevallig is er vlakbij een afrit of een ‘aire de repos’ (een picknickplaats, red.) en het is daar dat dieven de vakantiegangers opwachten om ze van hun kostbare bezittingen te beroven”, klinkt het bij de

Franse gendarmerie.

Een paar jaar geleden werd een bedwelmend gas in mobilhomes gespoten om toeristen te bestelen, dan waren er de dievenbendes die blauwe zwaailichten gebruikten om nietsvermoedende reizigers naar de kant te dwingen en vervolgens te overvallen. Of ze werden gewoon klemgereden. De daders gaan zo snel en professioneel te werk, dat andere weggebruikers niet eens doorhebben wat er aan de hand is. De daders plaatsen hun eigen voertuig ook altijd op zo’n manier dat de slachtoffers de nummerplaat van hun wagen niet kunnen noteren.

Medicijnen uit het pakket van Seguridad Social (425 stuks)Als je hoest hebt, last van aambeien of niet goed meer naar de wc kunt, dan heb je zo meteen pech want wordt er door de Interterritoriale Raad van de Spaanse Nationale Gezondheidszorg (hoogstwaarschijnlijk) goedgekeurd dat er 425 medicijnen van de Seguridad Social-lijst worden geschrapt. Met deze maatregel denkt het Ministerie van Gezondsheidszorg 448 miljoen te kunnen bezuinigen. De maatregel gaat 1 augustus 2012 in.

De lijst bevat aciclovir, codeïne en een aantal steroïden, vasodilatoren, laxeermiddelen, anti-inflammatoire of anti-diarree. Ook sommige corticosteroïden, vasodilatoren,

De reissector is boos omdat Spanje de luchthaventaksen plots heeft verhoogd. Eén van de maatregelen die de Spaanse staatskas uit het slop moet halen, is de verhoging van de luchthaventaksen. Daardoor wordt vliegen naar Spanje tot 9 euro duurder.Wie betaalt?Afhankelijk van de luchthaven waar u binnenkort op vliegt, betaalt u 2 (kleinere luchthavens, zoals Girona) tot 9 (grote luchthavens) euro meer voor een vliegticket.De wet geldt voor alle tickets die

sinds 30 juni werden aangekocht. Luchtvaartmaatschappijen zien zich genoodzaakt om de extra kosten door te rekenen aan de klanten.De meeste touroperators rekenen de verhoogde taks pas vanaf 10 augustus door naar de klant. Brussels Airlines en Ryanair voeren de taks echter meteen door. Zelfs voor reizigers die hun ticket naar Spanje voor 1 juli geboekt hebben.Voor een vlucht naar Madrid en Barcelona gaat het om respectievelijk 9,12 euro en 8,95 euro extra.

Catalonië krijgt strenger gevangenisregimeGedetineerden in Catalonië lijken de dupe te worden van de bezuinigingsmaatregelen van het regionaal bestuur.Om geld uit te sparen krijgen gevangenen in de avond niet langer een stukje fruit of een koekje.De maatregel moet Catalonië jaarlijks twee miljoen euro besparen, zei een bron bij het regionaal bestuur woensdag.De gedetineerden krijgen nog wel drie maaltijden per dag. Aan de porties wordt bovendien niet getornd. Gevangenisbewakers komen er op dat punt bekaaider vanaf, hun maaltijden worden met zes euro tweemaal zo duur.

Jeugddelinquenten behouden overigens wel het recht op een versnapering in de avonduren.
