This Land is Mine

Melbourne Chinese University of the Third Age (MCU3A) held the 5th Art Exhibition of calligraphy, sketch painting and bonsai at Boxhill Town Hall. In the opening ceremony on Tuesday the MCU3A choir presented two singings and one of the them was the theme song This Land is Mine from the 1960 movie Exodus by Paul Newman. This song, composed by Ernest Gold, won the best movie song in the Oscar back then. The movie and the theme song had aroused many Americans in support of Israel over the conflict between Israel and the Arabian countries. The song depicted how determined was Israel to re-establish their nation in fulfilling God s promise to them.

MCU3A is hosted by the Melbourne Chinese Inter-Church Committee in pursuing the mission allowing the elders to learn, to accomplish and to enjoy through the provision of learning opportunities to enrich the life of the senior generation. I think it is a very good idea so that many of our retired seniors can spend plenty of their spare time more meaningfully. MCU3A uses Chinese as the teaching medium for courses such as calligraphy, sketch painting, bonsai, singing, music, Chinese opera etc. all of which are very popular to many non-Chinese elders.

I am not up to the age of joining them in such activities as to share and experience their feel. Yet I was deeply touched when they were singing the song This Land is Mine with the same aspiration in having a land of their own. Many of them have had their dreams at their young age where they all strived to accomplish their goals until now where they can wind down to enjoy their years. Learning to sing in the MCU3A is another form of life advancement as they have been pursuing over time. The song This Land is Mine has a very cheering tune to match the heart of anyone who wants to endeavour for a personal goal.

I thank God for giving the church and MCU3A the vision and the committed co-workers in serving our seniors, as a response to community needs. Their powerful singing was really a manifestation of their zeal and stamina proclaimed to the world.
