1.1 Foundation and the early years

PAOK FC is the oldest division of PAOK Sports Club, the succession ofHermes Sports Club (Greek: ),which was formed in 1877 by the Greek community ofPera, a district of Istanbul.[3]

Following the merger with AEK Thessaloniki in 1929,PAOK changed its emblem. The new emblem becamethe double-headed eagle of the Byzantine Empire, whichit remains to this day, indicating the heritage of the emi-grants from Istanbul. The dierence between the PAOKeagle is that its wings folded and the colors are black andwhite, to symbolize the black of mourning for the tragicstory of lost homelands, and white for the hope of a betterfuture. The rst foreign coach in the history of the team was theGerman Rudolph Ganser, who served with PAOK for the193132 season.Following World War II and the German occupation ofGreece, the team known as the Two-Headed Eagle en-tered upon a shining chapter in its career starting at thebeginning of the 1950s. Willi Sevcik, an Austrian coach(19501952) who had worn the PAOK jersey in 193132, established a young talent academy within the clubwhich gave rise to leading names who later left theirmark, such as Leandros Symeonidis, Giannelos, Margari-tis, Giorgos Havanidis, and others.

    1.2 19531970: Recognition

1953 marked the beginning of PAOKs golden age. Dur-ing the summer transfer period, Kouiroukidis, Petridis,Progios, Geroudis, Kermanidis, Hourvouliadis, Hasio-tis and Angelidis all joined the club. PAOK becameall-powerful, winning the Thessaloniki championship forthree successive years and becoming a worthy represen-tative of Greeces second city in the national champi-onship.In 1957, the club managers envisioned a new footballground since the old ground had been annexed by thestate. The choice was a piece of land belonging to the Na-tional Defence Fund in the Toumba District, which wasalso a neighbourhood closely associated with refugeesfrom Asia Minor. A total area of 30,000 x2 was acquiredby PAOK for a signicant price, and construction of thenew football ground began. Lottery tickets were even is-sued to aid construction of the new stadium, which waseventually opened on 6 September 1959 by the Ministerof National Defence, Mr. G. Themelis. Before the rstkick-o, an Air Force plane dropped a ball on a y-pastas a symbolic donation from the armed forces. Thanksto its new Ground, PAOK was ready to start a brilliantcareer starting with the new First Division established in1959.At the opening of the 1st Divisions rst championshipon 25 October 1959, PAOK welcomed the Katerini teamMegas Alexandros, beating them 31. The team line-up was as follows: arko Mihajlovi (Serbian) and Pro-gios, Hasiotis, Raptopoulos, Giannelos, Kemanidis, Ha-vanidis, Leandros, Kiourtzis, Kouiroukidis, Salousto and

Nikolaidis. The success of the 1950s was followed by a decade ofaverage performance during the 60s. One could say thatit was as if the club was building up its strength to unleashit during the next decade.

    1.3 19701985: The golden years

    Giorgos Koudas

The team became established as one of the best ever toplay at Greek football grounds with players whose namesgained popularity in the Greek football scene. It was ateam which set several records, led by president GiorgosPantelakis.PAOK was able to make a blow to the football powersof Athens, winning the Championship in 1976, precededby triumphs in the Cup, in 1972 and 1974. 1976 alsomarked the foundation of Gate 4, PAOKs greatest orga-nized fanbase.Up to 1974, while Greece was governed by a militaryjunta, PAOK had not only a football power, but also ananti-dictatorship symbol of sorts, and Toumba stadiumbecame a harbor of fan anti-junta slogans.Les Shannon, who once played for high-ranking Englishclubs such as Liverpool and Burnley, was one the manycauses for PAOKs success as he led them to win theGreek football cup in 1972 and 1974. He is still heraldedas a hero in Greek football today.PAOKs excellent performance continued during theearly 1980s, with the club being one of the regular title

contenders. The highest point came in 1985, when theclub won its second Greek Championship, its rst trophysince Greek football became professional. Another char-acteristic of the 1980s was the ever-growing fanaticismof the fans, which reached levels of hooliganism neverseen before, and began to move beyond Greeces borders, spurring the creation of fanbases in cities all over Europeby the Greek diaspora. However, the obsession shown byfans also had its downside, translating in quite a few casesinto outbreaks of violence which entailed penalties andnes being imposed on the club.At the European level, the clubmade its best performanceever, qualifying for the quarter nals of the UEFA CupWinners Cup in 197374, where they were knocked outby the Italian team Milan. PAOK also made a memo-rable appearance against German giants Bayern Munichin the UEFA cup in 198384, where it was knocked outon penalties[5][6] after two goalless draws.

    1.4 19851996: The rst decline

    Arie Haan

The 1990s started well, with PAOK rmly among the topthree teams in Greece. It was stigmatized, however, byan extremely average-to-poor team performance underthe chairmanship of Thomas Voulinos, who came intodirect conict with the fans following serious hooligan-ism episodes during a PAOKParis Saint-Germainmatchfor the UEFA Cup, which led to PAOKs exclusion fromUEFA European competitions for ve years and verysoon to nancial ruin.

1.5 19962004: Revitalization and returnto trophies

In 1996, the change long demanded by PAOK fans cameabout. Voulinos handed over the reins of the club toGiorgos Batatoudis and an air of optimism was tangi-ble everywhere in Thessaloniki. Numerous transfers ofwell-known players such as Percy Olivares, Zisis Vryzas,Spyros Marangos, Kostas Fratzeskos, and others tookplace under the new administration.

    Ioannis Okkas

In 1997, having served its ve-year ban, PAOK even-tually qualied for the UEFA Cup with coach AngelosAnastasiadis, a well-known former PAOK player, on thebench. The clubs reappearance at European level wasmarked by an astonishing elimination of the British clubArsenal F.C.. PAOK was eliminated on the next roundby Atltico Madrid. However, the new team did not prove equally successfulin the domestic league, again nishing fourth in 19971998 despite great optimism. The clubs continuing in-ability to break the dominance of the big three in theleague resulted in several changes in managers over thefollowing three years. By the end of the 19971998 sea-son Anastasiadis was sacked and Oleg Blokhin reprisedhis position as PAOKs manager after ve years. Yet,unable to make any considerable improvements, Blokhinhimself only stayed for a few months, and was again re-placed by Anastasiadis in late 1998. He himself stayedonly till February 1999, and was again replaced in favorof Arie Haan, who, like Blokhin, returned after a four-

year gap. By December 1999, in tting fashion, Haanwas himself sacked, to be replaced by star coach DuanBajevi.PAOK was rmly established among the top teams in theGreek league, but once again growing nancial problemsand unstable administration by Batatoudis meant they stillcould not keep up with the three major league contendersof Athens. Nevertheless, Bajevic led the club to their rstthrophy in 16 years, winning an unforgettable Greek Cupnal against Olympiacos in 2001, with an emphatic 24[7]score.Angelos Anastasiadis was once again summoned, as Ba-jevic did not renew his contract in the summer of 2002.Anastasiadis led the club to another Cup triumph, thesecond in three years. It was in the clubs home groundin Toumba Stadium, that PAOK celebrated their fourthGreek Cup, defeating arch-rivals Aris Thessaloniki F.C.10.[8] Despite these triumphs, however, debts continuedto plague the club, and some successes in the UEFA Cupwere short-lived.

    1.6 200407: The second decline and near-destruction

In late summer of 2003, under great pressure from fans,Batatoudis handed his shares to businessmen GiannisGoumenos and Vassilis Pagonis. Giannis Goumenos alsoassumed the presidency, under the motto of a temporaryadministration. This meant that his role would be to tryto facilitate a possible deal with people willing to makethe hefty investments required to save the club from itsdebts.

    Dimitris Salpingidis

The 200304 season was an unexpected success under

the management of Anastasiadis, and although in accor-dance to a tight nancial policy (in order to decrease thedebts, leading many key players to leave as free agents forother clubs, including eventual champions Olympiacos),they managed to nish third and to secure participationin the qualifying rounds of the following years UEFAChampions League. The prospect of the ChampionsLeague group stage brought great optimism to fans andmanagement alike, especially because the projected in-come would practically eliminate all debts.Unfortunately the team failed to qualify, as they wereknocked out by unlikely opponents Maccabi Tel Aviv inthe third qualifying round. The main reason was that inthe home game, Anastasiadis elded Liassos Louka, aCypriot player who was still serving a two-match ban inUEFA competitions (for his sending-o in a UEFA In-tertoto Cup tie while playing for Nea Salamis on 8 July2000). Though the game did nish 12 for Maccabi, the03 forfeit win awarded to the Israelis destroyed all hopePAOK had for a comeback, and the rematch lost all in-terest (40 aggregate loss). After the subsequent UEFACup elimination by AZ Alkmaar, Anastasiadis resigned. Thus, the 20042005 season started with the worst omensfor the club and for Goumenos.Instead of making any improvements, Goumenos admin-istration failed miserably in the next two years, as theclubs debt to the Greek state (due to constant tax eva-sions, interests and unpaid nes) continued to grow, andon top of that, the nancial management of the club itselfwas ever deteriorating.Rolf Fringer was appointed as new coach in September2004, replacing Anastasiadis, yet did not live up to ex-pectations, managing Anastasiadis former squad whichmostly consisted of youngsters. After a few games,Fringer was eventually replaced by Nikos Karageorgiou, leading the club to a fth-place nish in May 2005, and aUEFA Cup qualication. The 200506 season started with better omens, yetproved to be the most turbulent.[9] Apart from the re-turn of former captain Theodoros Zagorakis in the sum-mer of 2005 from Bologna FC, signings of key play-ers like Marcin Mieciel, Fatih Akyel and Shikabala tookplace.[10] Despite this, another mediocre league start ledKarageorgiou to be sacked as well, and replaced by for-mer technical director Giorgos Kostikos. Kostikos didmanage good performances in the autumn of 2005, in-cluding an unexpected away win at Olympiacos FC, anda thrilling qualication to the UEFA Cup group stages. However, after the winter break, the squad fared frombad to worse, suering a handful of successive defeats, which led Kostikos to the exit as well, replaced by IlieDumitrescu. By now Goumenos had set a new record forthe club, by laying o ve dierent coaches in just 16months. While the club did achieve UEFA cup qualica-tion by nishing in sixth place, uncertainty was more thantangible.

  • 1.7 200710: The Zagorakis plan 5

    PAOK Olympiacos derby (2005)

By the end of May 2006, the clubs dramatic situationstarted to emerge, with players openly declaring they areunpaid for months, plus a shock decision by UEFA toban the club from participating in the upcoming UEFACup[11] brought the club one step from complete ruin, with the organized fanbase launching an all-out war onGiannis Goumenos in the June 2006,[12] going as faras to occupy the clubs oces in Toumba stadium fora handful of days. The situation was ever worseningfor Goumenos, after many failed deals with possibleinvestors,[13] constant allegations of embezzlement,[14]and especially his decision to sell star player DimitrisSalpingidis to Panathinaikos,[15] in an eort to cash in.The latter had a profound impact, causing a lot of disgustin the already disappointed fans. The 200607 season started with PAOK unsure if theycould even manage to participate in the Greek League, due to the pressing debts. Little-known players likeCarlos Zegarra and Miguel Rebosio were signed, in aneort to ll the squad, and Dumitrescu settled with ultra-defensive tactics, as the means to earn what points hecould resulting in terrible quality football, tiring fansand rapidly diminishing ticket sales.Eventually, Goumenos was forced to withdraw from thepresidency in 13 November 2006 (though he would notrelinquish his shares until over two years later).[16][17] Hewas replaced by Nikos Vezyrtzis and Apostolos Oikono-midis, former shareholders in PAOK BC. The new man-agement was appointed under order of the District Courtof Thessaloniki, as the club was now essentially understate observation, owing to the huge debt to the Greekstate which by now was well over 30 million. The club fared little better in remainder of the sea-son. Managerial changes continued as ever MomciloVukotic replaced Dumitrescu in October 2006,[18] onlyto be sacked himself ve months later, in favor of GiorgosParaschos. PAOK eventually nished the 20062007season in 6th place, losing out on the UEFA Cup spots, and little hope of breaking its shackles, as the fans contin-ued to put very little trust in the Vezyrtzis-Oikonomidis

duo and the needed investments seemed highly unlikely.

    1.7 200710: The Zagorakis plan

PAOK Olympiakos 10 (2009), close view of the pitch.

    Pablo Gabriel Garca

In the summer of 2007, Theodoros Zagorakis as-sumed presidency of the club, replacing the Vezyrtzis-Oikonomidis administration and thus ushered in a newera. One of the new managements rst actions was tolay down a three-year plan: the rst year priority wouldbe to take action the clubs massive crippling debts, be-ginning in 200708, the second would be to qualify forthe UEFA Cup again, and the third would be to becomea major league title contender once again.Yet because of the tremendous nancial breakdown inthe past four years, the club was left with a low qualityroster and almost no prospect of any summer transfers.Yet, due to hope and trust of the traditional fanbase inthe iconic gure of Zagorakis, the summer of 2007 sawan unprecedented rise in season ticket sales, toppling allprevious club records, and bringing a much-needed inuxof cash for the club. This allowed the transfers of sea-soned though relatively cheap, being free agents play-ers like Vassilis Lakis, Ifeanyi Udeze, and Glen Salmon, and also the return of veteran PAOK and Perugia strikerZisis Vryzas. Many older debts to former players andmanagers, could nally be paid o.

  • 6 1 HISTORY

Theodoros Zagorakis, captain of the 2004 Greece national foot-ball team

The plans rst season was still plagued by poor per-formances, including many home defeats and an elim-ination from the Greek Cup by second division clubThrasyvoulos. The early replacement of coach GiorgosParaschos by established manager Fernando Santos didlittle to prevent a ninth-place nish in the league, theworst performance by the club in 11 years. One of the fewhigh points was the winter transfer of star player SrgioConceio. The clubs nances, however, gradually improved, and thanks to the continuing massive support from fansin the form of season tickets,[19] as well as many newsponsorship deals the summer of 2008 saw the trans-fers of widely known internationals like Pablo Contr-eras,[20] Zlatan Muslimovi,[21] Pablo Garca[22] to theclub, among others. Many of them were attributed toZisis Vryzas, who hadmeanwhile decided to retire in Jan-uary 2008 to assume the place of technical director forthe club.In January 2009, Zagorakis announced the clubs inten-tion of building a new training facility complex in NeaMesimvria, Thessaloniki. The club had already acquiredland from the municipality of Agios Athanasios in theprevious summer,[23] and by February construction wasalready under way.

The end of the 200809 season found PAOK in secondplace, eight points behind champions Olympiacos, thebest place the club had taken since 1985, and well abovewhat was expected in the summer. This success, how-ever was short-lived, as the club failed to retain their placein the recently erected league playos, nishing fourthand missing out on the second UEFA Champions Leagueberth to Panathinaikos. Nevertheless, the club secured aspot in the 200910 UEFA Europa League third qualify-ing round.Despite the League playo failure, the 200910 seasonstarted with the best omens for the club, as once againthe response to the summer sales of season tickets wasenormous, despite the hefty increase in prices. Numeroustransfers once again took place, including former Racingde Santander player Vitolo, experienced defender BrunoCirillo, and star youngster Vasilios Koutsianikoulis, theclubs costliest transfer in many years. Key players con-tracts, like Olivier Sorlin and Vieirinha, were also re-newed.The new squad did not manage to live up to expecta-tions immediately, suering a painful (especially in -nancial terms) UEFA Cup elimination by Dutch clubHeerenveen. To make matters worse, the rst few gamesof 2009 found the club struggling in low positions. De-spite that, the squad gradually started to climb to the rstplaces, and starting on 5 December 2009, managed a 13-game unbeaten streak, including memorable wins againstPanathinaikos and Olympiacos, solidifying the club asone of the main league title contenders. This run wasnot without setbacks, as the club suered another shockelimination, this time from the Greek Cup, at the handsof recently promoted PAS Giannena. The unbeaten streak ended in late March, when succes-sive derby defeats by Aris and AEK, eectively endedany hope of winning the championship. However, theclub redeemed itself in the league play-os by nishingrst, with impressive consecutive wins against Aris Thes-saloniki F.C., AEK F.C. and twice against OlympiakosF.C.. Thus, PAOK was eligible to compete in the 201011 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

1.8 201012: The years after FernandoSantos

The three-year plan ended as a perceived success; PAOKwas transformed from amiserable, rapidly collapsing clubto a major championship contender once again, llingToumba stadium on a regular basis, and having constantlypositive nances, despite the burden of the still unsettleddebt to the Greek state. The 2010 league playo success was swiftly followed byFernando Santos' announcement of his decision to depart, having concluded his three-year contract.[24] It was even-tually decided in mid-June that Mario Beretta would behis successor,[25] following negotiations with numerous

other Italian managers by Zisis Vryzas. The clubs rst and much speculated transfer was thereturn of prodigal son Dimitris Salpingidis for the nextfour years, whose contract with Panathinaikos had justexpired in June. The rst dumors initially caused somecontroversy among the organized fan base, though Salp-ingidis was eventually welcomed back by the vast major-ity of fans, very much in light of his huge potential as astriker. After withdrawing to the training facilities of Bad Brck-enau in mid-July, the club was also drawn to face AFCAjax in the third qualifying round. As the squad made several awful appearances in its pre-season friendly matches (notably losing to Kickers Oen-bach by 31[26]), alarming fans and management alike,Theodoros Zagorakis nally decided to re Beretta andhis sta on 22 July, just one week prior to the clubs awaymatch in Amsterdam. Beretta was quickly replaced withPavlos Dermitzakis, veteran PAOK player and Zagorakisinitial choice before reverting to Beretta.[27] Beretta alsobecame the shortest-lived PAOK coach ever, sitting onthe bench for just 38 days.[28]

With Dermitzakis at the helm, PAOK faced Ajax andwas ultimately eliminated on the away goals rule, manag-ing a 11[29] draw in Amsterdam and a thrilling 33[30]draw in Thessaloniki. Entering theUEFAEuropa Leagueplayo round, PAOK were drawn against Turkish clubFenerbahe, also eliminated on the Champions League

third qualifying round. This time, PAOK fared muchbetter and after winning the home game 10[31] in Thes-saloniki, secured a memorable 11[32] draw in Istanbulafter extra time, qualifying for the group stage, and beingdrawn to play alongside Villarreal CF, Club Brugge andDinamo Zagreb.Unfortunately, such excellent performances did not con-tinue in the rst xtures of the Greek league. Unsuc-cessful results included a stinging 01[33] home loss toarch-rival Aris FC (the rst home loss in twelve years),and although the European campaign was on track (witha draw against Brugge and a win against Dinamo Zagreb)many key players received harsh criticism from the fans, not as much for the bad results, as for their apparent lackof passion, which they showed against Ajax and Fener-bahe. Dermitzakis was not excluded from criticism, andwas thought to be losing control over his players disciplineby engaging in personal conicts.

    Kostas Katsouranis

Another hands-down defeat against Panathinaikos ce-mented the belief that the team cannot be improved underDermitzakis, leading to his removal on 17 October.[34]His assistant Makis Chavos replaced him as caretakercoach. At rst fans were asking for a quick replace ofChavos by a European-range coach, but after a streak offour wins in the Greek Superleague and a home 10[35]win against Villarreal CF in the UEFA Europe Leaguegroup stage, Chavos started to be considered as a usefulsolution as long as the team remained tranquil and wasindeed signed as the permanent coach in mid-December.PAOK ended their Europa League group stage campaignwith an emphatic win 01[36] at GNK Dinamo Zagreb, qualifying second after Villarreal CF. They were laterdrawn to face PFC CSKA Moscow on the rst knock-out round in February. The rst game in Toumba ended01[37] and, due to the 11[38] result in Moscow, PAOKwas eliminated from the next phase of 201011 UEFA

The rivalry is mainly fueled by the cor-responding rivalry that exists in many aspects betweenAthens and Thessaloniki.A deep-seated hatred also exists between PAOK and lo-cal rivals Aris Thessaloniki, which has culminated in twomemorable Greek Cup nals between them, each clubwinning one. Also highlighted were theclubs fanatically obsessed fans, massively following theclub on every occasion.PAOKs best Cup Winners cup performance was inthe 197374 season, when they reached the quarter-nals of the competition. Eliminating Legia Warsawand Olympique Lyonnais on the way, PAOK were nallyeliminated by Milan. This campaign ended in Russia againstCSKA Moscow, with PAOK however going down withno less than a hard ght.

The clubs biggest win in a European competitionwas 70 against Lokomotivi Tbilisi in 1999, whilethe heaviest defeat was 06 to Wiener SC in 1965.
