A note from the PrincipalYear 12 Formal

On Wednesday our Year 12 students and partners gathered at the Convention Centre to celebrate their

Senior year. The evening was coordinated by Mrs Foster and Mr Kelman and their Senior Leaders. I thank

all for their engagement and involvement in a great night.

Old Boys Concert

On Monday evening the College Music Staff, led by Mr Young and Mr Brown and our Old Boys Choir and

Guitar ensemble performed at St Ignatius Church. This evening was very well received and highlights the

connections that our Old Boys still have with the College. Well done to all involved.

Year 6 Camp and Year 5 Liturgy

I thank Mr Sharkey and the Year 6 staff for giving the boys another great educational experience at Camp

Laurence. I also thank the boys for their engagement and Ms Narelle Gowland for organising the outdoor

educational experience.

I also thank Mr O’Toole and the Year 5 staff for conducting the annual Year 5 Induction Liturgy held on

Monday.

Tours

I wish all boys well who journey domestically and overseas during the holiday break. I trust that these

experiences continue to see growth in the boys to develop outward looking men of integrity.

As we move to the conclusion of Term 1 and the Easter break, I wish all our families a holy and safe Easter.

As a Catholic School, it is at this time that we remember why we exist. We are here to bring hope to our

young people and to give witness to the vision of Jesus Christ. I thank all who contribute to this vision and

I look forward to a great Term 2.

Identity MattersEaster

This week we go into the holidays by entering into the Easter season in our Church calendar. On Holy Thursday we see Jesus sharing

his last meal with his disciples. At this meal the Eucharist, as we know it today, was instituted through Christ blessing, breaking and

sharing bread and wine in his memory. Then on Good Friday, we witness the Passion of Christ with all of its suffering, humiliation and

cruelty. We only need look around our world to see the same things happening – the suffering of those who are in war, the displaced,

the homeless, the victims of domestic violence, those who have lost jobs and cannot support their families, the ones who have lost

everything due to recent natural disasters, the list goes on. As with Jesus, the people in power do not always use power for good and

the result is often one of suffering.

Then, on Easter Saturday we wait. Holy Saturday is the day we remember that Jesus’ body lay in the tomb. It is a day of solitude when

the Church offers no Masses, no words or proclamations. In silence we wait for the time when all

things will be made new. Spiritually it is a deeply significant time. Life is, in many ways, like an Easter

Saturday. We wait in hope for the transformation that will come. We live in the mystery of not fully

understanding, not fully knowing. We live in hope, trusting in all that life conceals and reveals.

Then we arrive at Easter Sunday! Easter is the cornerstone of our faith, it is the message of irrepressible hope that inspires us to keep

persevering and struggling in spite of the difficulties. In the Easter story we find Christ’s message of hope and love was too strong – he

rose again. It is in him that our hope comes to life.

On this day we recall the women who discover that the tomb is empty and Resurrection theology is born. From this we come to

realise that we are seen and known, loved and forgiven. We are worth the effort and free to participate in all that life may bring. There

is purpose, there is meaning, there is great love. We have a new commandment. We live with Good News to share.

(Image from: https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2015/03/13/08/45/cross-671379_960_720.jpg)

So, what might this mean for us? It might mean being people who care about people. It might mean being people who can be with

those who suffer or who are lonely. It might mean waiting with someone who is afraid, or staying with someone who is lost, or standing

with those who are outcast.

It might mean participating in life in all its ups and downs and never giving up on the possibility that life is trustworthy and worth the

effort. It might mean being a people who can imagine possibilities and live in the promise of renewal and the hope of new life….and

chocolate, don’t forget chocolate!

I wish you and your families a blessed time through the Easter season and a wonderful holiday to refresh, renew and reinvigorate for

another busy term ahead.

Pastoral MattersOur main focus this term in the pastoral team has been on building relationships with others. Lauries Journey lessons have included such topics as: Leadership, The Lauries ‘Gentleman’, Anti-Bullying, Resilience, Growth Mindset, Grit, Well-being and Cyberbullying. To finish this term, I thought I would share a newsletter from the Office of eSafety Commissioner on Cyberbullying – supporting your child online.

Childhood bullying used to be face-to-face physical and verbal behaviour in the playground, classroom and on the way to and from school. Now online technology and constant connectivity has allowed bullying to harm children through often anonymous contact or actions. Cyberbullying can happen at any time and leave a child feeling unsafe and alone.

Cyberbullying commonly occurs through:

• Comments posted in an open online environment such as Facebook.

• Direct text, email or instant messages online or on a mobile phone.

• Private features on social networking services such as Snapchat and Facebook Messenger.

Children can manage cyberbullying with your support by taking the following action:

• Blocking the person cyberbullying and changing privacy settings. Retaliating or responding to the perpetrator only gives them the attention and power they want.

• Reporting the bullying. Most websites have online safety centres and reporting facilities. Online abuse is in violation of the Terms of Use of most social networking sites. The Office of the eSafety Commission can take complaints and provide assistance in relation to serious cyberbullying material that is directed at a particular child with the intention to seriously embarrass, harass, threaten or humiliate.

• Collecting the evidence. Keeping mobile phone messages and printing emails.

• Talking to someone they trust like parents or a teacher.

• Visiting iParent for a list of sources of professional support including the Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800, eheadspace on 1800 650 890 or parentline.

• Taking the cyberbullying quiz. There is also a quiz for parents.

• Watch the “Chatterbox” video and listen to the podcast about cyberbullying.

The informal nature of Chatterbox provides parents with a fresh, new and jargon-free perspective on cybersafety issues. Chatterbox aims to empower parents to approach eSafety issues with confidence and increase understanding of the main online safety issues children experience.

Pastoral Matters

Congratulations to both Chris and Craig Isaacs (pictured) who last week won gold medals at the Australian Boxing Championships. Chris won the U17 boys 52kg division and Craig won the U15 boys 44kg division. Well done gents!

This week, as we finish off Term 1 for 2018, I would like to wish the Year 12 boys all the very best for their formal on Wednesday night and to all students, I hope they have achieved their best academically in Term 1.

Some important dates for Term 2 include:

• Structured Work Placement (Senior Students) 17-20 April

Music Notes

I wish all students and families a safe and Holy Easter. Thank you to students and parents for your work this term. SLC Old Boys/Community Choir Concert

Last Monday evening the St Laurence’s Old Boys’ Brass ensemble, Old Boys’ Guitar Ensemble, Community Choir and Old Boys’ choir presented a wonderful concert in aid of Jesuit Mission. St Ignatius Church at Toowong was filled with members of the community, parishioners, Christian Brothers, students, parents and friends. For several years now we have been supporting the Jesuit school in Myanmar. It was great to see Old Boys going back to 2000 performing together. The community choir involved staff members, families, friends, girlfriends, partners, husbands and congregation members from various churches. Past staff members including Mrs Mary Maroske and Mrs Lesley Oakes joined us again, while Old Boy Jake Finlay travelled from Toowoomba for the event. We met Mr Dorge who sang in the Christian Brothers singing competitions in the 1960s. He is starting a project with the Mater hospital to use music to assist those suffering from dementia. Highlights of the concert included the Brass ensemble which involved professional Old Boy players, new compositions from Old Boys Joe Fallon and Tom Collins, and new works presented by the Guitar orchestra. A feature of Old Boy and Community music making is the fellowship of many generations coming together to make something of beauty in a good cause. This shows that music brings joy to our hearts for life. Thanks to the St Laurence’s Music Staff, to the many staff who performed and to Mrs Helen Turner, Director of Communication, Development and Events for supporting the Community Music season and for helping on the night.

Congratulations to Nicholas Drew, Year 11Nicholas has been selected to take part in the Queensland St Vincent de Paul Society’s Empower Leadership

program. In this program Nicholas will continue to develop his leadership skills and have the opportunity to

engage with many other young people who are on a similar leadership journey. The joys of leadership and

the challenges that are faced in leading in a contemporary world will be a key part of the program as well.

The program begins over the Easter holiday break. At the conclusion of the program, Nicholas will have the

opportunity to apply these leadership skills with a volunteering experience that connects children in need

of support with positive role models. As a role model, Nicholas will be actively engaged in creating a warm,

positive environment to build friendships, confidence, self-esteem and social skills for the children involved.

We wish Nicholas all the very best as he embarks on this program knowing that the skills he learns will help to further promote his

potential for leadership in the St Laurence’s College community as well.

USA Sports Scholarships and University Placements

Many universities and colleges in the USA offer sports scholarships to students from other countries. To be considered for these

scholarships you have to be able to demonstrate your sporting and academic potential. The process involved in researching available

scholarships and applying for them is quite complex. There are several organisations that offer a service to help you through the

process. It is important to find out as much as you can about the organisations and, if possible, talk to previous clients. The following

are examples:

• Study and Play in the USA – This organisation has had over a decade of experience helping young Australians gain sports

scholarships in the USA. During this time, it has established regular contact with head coaches in a wide range of sports across the

US. Visit the website for more information.

• Aus Recruit – This organisation is a scholarship placement agency that represents talented student-athletes interested in obtaining

sport scholarships to US universities. It has been operating since 2002. Read about the services provided by Aus Recruit on its

website.

• Internationally Educated – This organisation assists students and their families through the selection and application process for

US universities. More information on the website.

• Student Placement Australia New Zealand – This organisation offers several programs including an athletic and academic

scholarships program through Go Campus. Find out more on the website.

Interstate Tertiary Applications

In addition to applying through QTAC for Queensland tertiary courses, you can apply for courses in other states. All states except

Tasmania use a tertiary admissions centre like QTAC. All applications are online. It is recommended that you familiarise yourself with

the application information on the relevant websites including key dates for applications.

• New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory - Universities Admissions Centre (UAC)

• South Australia and the Northern Territory - South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC)

• Tasmania - Apply directly to the University of Tasmania

• Victoria - Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC)

• Western Australia - Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC)
