A note from the PrincipalOn Wednesday the St Laurence’s Community welcomed 200 staff and students from Fort Collins High School in Denver, Colorado USA. These students are on a music tour and visited our College to perform with our students on Wednesday evening. This was a spectacular concert and I thank Mr Capern and staff for their generosity in hosting the evening.

Cure Brain CancerOn Tuesday evening Jackson Henwood (pictured left) in Year 7 shaved his hair in support of the Charity ‘Cure Brain Cancer”. Jackson has already raised over $1500 for this charity in honour of his close friend, Oscar Lynch who passed away earlier this year with brain cancer. Great work Jackson!

VET AwardsOn Tuesday Ms Smith from our VET Department announced our award winners for their achievements in the vocational area. These boys always represent us well in their work placement and through School Based Apprenticeships. It was also great to see parents at the assembly. Well done boys!

Parent and Friends MeetingOn Monday evening, Mr David Knight, the Head of Middle School presented to our parents on the 2019 Pastoral Care model. The College will have pastoral care organised around a Year 5-6 Year Level system and a Year 7-12 House system. There will be ten houses and the Head of House journeying with the boys from Year 7 to 12. This is a six year journey. We also hope that the Home Class Teacher will also journey with the boys in their Home Class from Year 7 – 12. This response was seen as necessary to best meet the needs of our boys.

I thank Mr Knight, Mr Herbert and Mr Butterworth for leading this change. Boys will be assigned to Houses later in the year and this information will be communicated home in due course for feedback.

Opening of the Primary PrecinctOn Friday (today) we will officially open the Brother WJ Hogan Primary Precinct. I thank Fr John Gillen for blessing the precinct. I also thank our Board Chair, Mr Paul Begg for opening the Precinct. Ms Kenny and Mr Wigan have organised this event with the help of our Communications, Development and Events team. I congratulate Brad Armstrong from Armstrong Builders, for a great job. I also thank Mr Tony Heath for designing and project managing this build. Our staff believe that this change in our learning structure will best prepare our boys for the future.

AIC SportI wish all boys well this weekend in cricket and volleyball fixtures against Iona College. In the First Volleyball both Iona and St Laurence’s are undefeated at this stage. I look forward to a great game played in the right spirit. I thank all parents, staff and coaches for their efforts during Term 1 sport.

St Laurence’s College hosts Terri Butler and Andrew GilesOn Thursday representatives from local Catholic Schools, the Parents and Friends Association, Brisbane Catholic Education and the Catholic Primary Principal’s Association attended a meeting at the College with our local Federal Member, Terri Butler and the Shadow Assistant Minister for Schools, Andrew Giles.

A very thorough discussion was held particularly around the topic of School funding. It was great to have our voices heard and I thank Terri Butler for organising the day. Catholic School offer a great education and we thank both the State and Federal Government for their ongoing support of our schools. We, as a sector, continue to work with Government to get the best outcomes for our students.

Identity MattersSaturday 17th March marks the Feast of St Patrick and many will be involved in great celebrations of all things Irish. Patrick’s story is an

interesting one and it is that story that I would like to share with you.

Patrick of Ireland is one of the world’s most popular saints. He was born in Roman Britain and when he was fourteen

or so, he was captured by Irish pirates during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep.

At the time, Ireland was a land of Druids and pagans but Patrick turned to God. … Patrick’s captivity lasted until he

was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the

coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britain and was reunited with his family.

A few years after returning home, Patrick saw a vision. … The vision prompted his studies for the priesthood. He was

ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years, and was later ordained a

bishop and sent to take the Gospel to Ireland.

Patrick arrived in Slane, Ireland on March 25, 433. There are several legends about what happened next, with the most prominent claiming

he met the chieftan of one of the druid tribes, who tried to kill him. After an intervention from God, Patrick was able to convert the chieftain

and preach the Gospel throughout Ireland. There, he converted many people -eventually thousands - and he began building churches across

the country.

He often used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity and entire kingdoms were eventually converted to Christianity after hearing Patrick’s

message. Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions.

After years of living in poverty, traveling and enduring much suffering he died March 17, 461.

He died at Saul, where he had built the first Irish church. He is believed to be buried in Down Cathedral, Downpatrick. His grave was marked

in 1990 with a granite stone.

Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each of us. So

complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission, he feared nothing -not even death.

“The Breastplate,” Patrick’s poem of faith and trust in God:

“Christ be within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me,

Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ inquired, Christ

in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.”

What’s happening in Science?

Primary

Ruben Meerman, The Surfing Scientist, visited Year 5 on the 8th March. He took the students

through a series of experiments that explored the notion of an atom. They learnt about lasers,

expansion, contraction and had fun playing with liquid nitrogen. After a standing ovation from the

kids he will be a presenter we will get back again.

Chemistry

Our Year 12 Chemistry boys are finalising their Extended Research Task on Fuels. They

were required to design, perform and write a report on an investigation specifically

related to the best fuel for motoring. They were able to examine blended fuels or a

different variety of fuels that may or may not be on offer here in Australia and consider

things like; reasons for blending fuels, impact of blending on engines, and what parameters

are used to determine what a good fuel source is.

Science & Engineering Challenge

On the 20th March we have a group of 16 boys from Year 9 who have nominated to be part of the QUT Science and Engineering

Challenge team. These boys will compete against other Brisbane schools on various design challenges. Dr Ray Marshall will be leading

the group of boys who will compete at South Bank next Tuesday. We wish the team all the best!

REMINDERAll blazers need to be collected from The Lauries Shop before the end of Term to ensure students have them in time for Term 2 uniform requirements.

It is compulsory during Terms 2 and 3 that all students wear the College blazer and tie each day, and for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to wear their trousers.

History Update

This month marks the birthday of one of the most important individuals to influence modern society. Alexander Graham Bell, the

inventor of the telephone, was born on March 3rd1847. This invention revolutionised society in the 19th century and has aided the

technological revolution we are currently witnessing. Many other exciting inventors and innovations are being researched currently

by our Year 9 students who are assessing the impact of inventions -such as the Colt revolver, the Steam Engine and the Light Bulb-

on society during the Industrial Revolution. It has been wonderful to witness them make connections with how the past is directly

influencing our present. Likewise, the Year 8 students have been working hard in their teams to create a documentary about key events

in the Middle Ages including the Black Death and the Magna Carta. Our Year 7 historians have been uncovering methods used in the

study of history and archaeology which allow us to understand and create meaning from the past. As always, the Senior Modern and

Ancient History students have been working diligently enhancing their historical skills and connecting concepts and events across time.

As St Patrick’s day is this weekend, I will leave you with a few Irish/Australian historical facts; The first rugby union game between Ireland

and Australia took place on November 12th 1927 (Australian won 5-3), the first recorded St Patricks day celebrations took place by

rowdy convicts in Victoria in 1795 and in 2013 the enshrined heart of St Laurence O Tool- whom the College is named after- was stolen

from Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin.

Real World Geography

The Urban Farm fits perfectly in to the Year 9 Australian

Curriculum Geography unit called ‘Biomes and Food Security’.

Toward the end of the unit, students reflect on the future of

food production, and are able to see a fully functional urban

farm right here on the College grounds. Mr Smith’s two Year

9 Geography classes went on a tour of the farm, guided by Ms

Kilburn, where they learned about the various ways that food

can be produced on an inner-city site that comes with many

challenges. They students asked some thoughtful questions, with

some of them deciding that they would like to be involved in

the farm’s activities.

Mr Chris Edwards, business owner and father of young urban farmer, Dominic in Year 5, has been kindly

donating bucket-loads of food scraps to the Urban Farm. The scraps are distributed amongst the worm

farm, the poultry and the compost bins. Food scraps are a very valuable resource for the farm. They not

only contribute to the feeding of worms and chickens, and the making of compost, but it also means that less waste is going to landfill.

We also have a small team of farmers who are responsible for collecting the food waste from the tuckshop each day, as well as several

teachers who like to bring in their household food scraps to put to good use rather than simply throwing them away. We thank them

all for their thoughtful contributions.

Thinking of Taking a Gap Year?

Many students consider taking a break from studying at the conclusion of high school. Whilst some people balk at the idea of breaking from the routine of study, there is evidence to show that participating in a structured Gap Year can have great benefits to individuals embarking on further study after the conclusion of their time away from study. Below is a list of some Gap Year Program information events and due dates:

• Applications for the Australian Defence Gap Year will open in March. This is a very popular program. Don’t miss out.

Apply early

• Camp America organises summer (May, June, July) camp jobs in the USA for students from around the world. At

camp, participants work directly with American children; by instructing or assisting them in activities. There are

different types of camps and types of roles available. The visa required for the program includes 30 days of travel

time in the USA before and after the camp. Visit the Camp America website for more information..

• GVI International offers you a chance to speak to their team if you are interested in joining a GVI project but are unsure of what to expect. They offer Meet Ups, Open Days and Events. Visit their website for more information.

• Applications for the 2019 Letz Live/Tutors Worldwide UK gap program will close on 9 April 2018. Visit the Letz Live

website for details.

• Projects Abroad will hold a High School Projects Webinar on Monday 19 March 2018. Visit the site to register.

• Southern Cross Cultural Exchange will hold a number of information sessions in March 2018. Visit their website to

register your interest in attending.

• Youth for Understanding (YFU) will have a number of Webinars on their website to assist you to understand options
