SUBSTRATES DIVISIONPROFESSIONAL, HIGH-RESISTANCEBINDERS AND SCREEDS

Professional, superior-technologyready-for-use screed with high

resistance, normal setting and rapiddrying, compensated shrinkage and

high thermal conductivity, suitable forlaying ceramic tiles, homogeneous tiles,

natural stone, parquet and resilient materialswith adhesives. Ideal for underfloor heating

systems.

AVANT-GARDE TECHNOLOGY – The technological innovation of KERACEM® PRONTOrevolutionises screed techniques in the restoration of dwelling houses or buildings where activities

are ongoing during the execution of works, in the absence of an organised building site and intown or city centres. KERACEM® PRONTO overcomes the difficulty of finding suitable inert

materials, prevents dosage errors and allows for mechanical application also in extremeclimatic conditions, ensuring the creation of professional screeds characterised by higher

levels of reliability and improved performance.

HIGH DIMENSIONAL STABILITY – Slow-drying screeds with high levels ofhygrometric shrinkage require long waiting times before allowing for professional laying

of ceramic or covering materials sensitive to humidity. The KERACEM® PRONTOtechnology rapidly develops a high hydraulicity, a high level of dimensional stability

and constant hygrometric balance, thus ensuring rapid and secure laying ofceramic tiles after 24 hours and parquet after only 5 days.

HIGH MECHANICAL RESISTANCE – A mix of high-resistance hydraulicbinders ensures mechanical performance superior to that of screeds created

with Portland cement. The use of specific, low-viscosity polymers completesthe chemical structure of KERACEM® PRONTO, reduces interstitial porosity

and increases compactness, i.e. the essential conditions for long-lifescreeds subject to heavy traffic.

AREAS OF USE

KERACEM® PRONTO

High-resistance screeds or heat-radiant slabs must be produced with a professional, superior-technology ready-for-usescreed with compensated shrinkage, normal setting and rapid drying, such as KERACEM® PRONTO manufactured byKerakoll, for an average thickness of ____ cm, suitable for laying ceramic tiles after 24 hours and parquet after 5 days. Thesupply and installation of deformable bands in polyethylene foam for desolidarisation joints, fractionizing of surfaces inlarge areas and finishing with trowel or rotating steel disk are included. Compliant with DIN 18 560, Class ZE 20. Averagecoverage ≈ ____ kg/m2.

ABSTRACT

PREPARATION OF SUBSTRATES

The substrate must be dimensionally stable, clean, dry, free from any rising damp, without cracks, free from dustand loose, crumbling parts and must present a degree of mechanical resistance suitable for its use. The screedto be covered must be desolidarised from all vertical elements by means of a band in deformable material witha thickness of ≈ 8 – 10 mm, along the entire height of the screed. The structural joints present in the substrate must be created accordingly also in the thickness of the screed.Adherent screeds: in the case of irregular substrates with screed thicknesses which are variable or in any caseless than 40 mm it is advisable to prepare the substrate positioning, between the midpoint and lower third ofthe total thickness of the screed, an electro-welded 50x50 mm mesh of Ø 2 mm, to be anchored to the substrate. To improve adhesion to the substrate apply a slurry key "wet on wet", prepared with 2.5 parts 32.5 – 42.5cement, 1 part concentrated, polymeric P6 latex and 1 part water.Floating screeds: when laying water-sensitive flooring or in the case of substrates with a risk of rising damp orwhich are not perfectly matured, it is indispensable to create a vapour barrier over the substrate (which shouldbe smooth and free from rough parts) using sheets of polyethylene or PVC. The sheets should be laid overlappingone another by at least 20 cm, sealed with adhesive tape and turned up on the walls and vertical elements suchas pillars to a height corresponding with the entire thickness of the screed.Screeds on compressible substrates:on lightened, low-density substrates or in the presence of layers (also thinlayers) of thermal/acoustic insulating materials, provide for screed thicknesses and possibly also reinforcementcalculated on the basis of the deformability class of the materials mentioned.

SPECIAL NOTES

Elastic joints: expansion joints must be provided for, as in the case of traditional cement-based screeds,at thresholds, niches, corners, edges, wall openings and fractionizing joints in the case of largecontinuous surfaces. The structural joints present in the substrate must be created accordingly also in thethickness of the screed.

Measurement of humidity: residual humidity can be measured correctly only with a calcium carbidehygrometer. Normal electric hygrometers are not recommended as they will provide unstable andincorrect values owing to the special binders used.

PreparationKERACEM® PRONTO must be mixed with clean water using common building-site equipment such astilting mixers, mobile concrete mixers, pressure or screw mixers, following the indicated water/KERACEM®

PRONTO mixing ratio, until a semi-dry, compact consistency has been obtained without surface bleedingof water. When working with temperatures close to 0 °C, protect the bags of KERACEM® PRONTO againstovernight frost and use warm water to improve mixing, transportation, pumpability and workability of themixture. On the contrary, in the case of high temperatures the bags of KERACEM® PRONTO kept at thebuilding site must be stored in the shade and cold water must be used. The ideal equipment for the production of screeds with a semi-dry consistency such as KERACEM®

PRONTO is a pressure-mixer with pneumatic transportation. With a tank capacity of 260 litres it ispossible to insert 11-13 30 kg bags of KERACEM® PRONTO for each mixing operation. Before closingthe hatchway add ≈ 22 – 26 litres of water. With a tank capacity of 190 litres, insert 8 – 10 bags and≈ 16 – 20 litres of water.

ApplicationKERACEM® PRONTO can be applied in a practical and secure manner, following the traditional phasesrequired to produce cement-based screeds: i.e. preparation of level belts, casting and compacting thepaste, levelling and final smoothing with a spreader or by mechanical means. The compacting phase isparticularly important to ensure the highest levels of mechanical performance; it must be carried outimmediately after laying the screed on the substrate and before regularisation of the surface by meansof a metal float. In the case of high thicknesses, beating must be carried out various times until therequired thickness is obtained. The finish of the screed, carried out by moistening it with water and usinga rotating steel disk, very often results in the creation of a surface crust which is not very absorbent andwill extend the drying time of the screed and worsen the performance of the adhesive. At the pointwhere tubing is installed, where the thickness of the screed might be finer (minimum 2 cm), it isnecessary to insert a tight-mesh, galvanised metal reinforcement grid (2 – 3 cm). At pointscorresponding with construction joints caused by interruption of the work process, it is necessary tomake a connection between the two castings, inserting iron rod bolts of ≈ 50 cm length and 5 mm Øwith a distance of ≈ 20 – 30 cm between one rod and the next, or a section of electro-welded mesh (Ø5 mm, 20x20 cm mesh size) and applying to the wall of the casting, before continuation of the work,a slurry key prepared with 2.5 parts of 32.5 – 42.5 cement, 1 part of concentrated, polymeric P6 latexand 1 part water.

CleaningResidual traces of KERACEM® PRONTO can be removed from machinery and tools with water beforethe product has hardened.
