be ready for the start of all our activities once again. Without the love, caring and assis-

tance of our volunteers, we would not be able to maintain our Church as beautifully as we

Εὐλογητὸς εἶ, Κύριε, ὁ Θεὸς τῶν Πατέρων ἡμῶν.

Στίχ. Ὅτι δίκαιος εἶ ἐπὶ πᾶσιν, οἷς ἐποίησας ἡμῖν.

Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος, καὶ περὶ τούτων βούλομαί σε διαβεβαιοῦσθαι, ἵνα φροντίζωσιν καλῶν

ΝΕΟ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ: «Η Γωνιά του Εφήβου» για νέους ηλικίας 14 ετών και άνω, είναι

μια ομάδα συζήτησης με επικεφαλής τον Κώστα Σταυριανέα ο οποίος έχει

πολυετή πείρα διδασκαλίας σε νέους με θέμα την Ορθόδοξη Πίστη. Η ομάδα

θα συζητά διάφορα θέματα που αφορούν την εφηβεία από την σκοπιά της

Ορθοδοξίας και στόχος της είναι να βοηθήσει τη νεολαία μας στο να

εμβαθύνει και να κατανοήσει την πρακτική της Πίστης μας. Παρακαλούμε

διαδώστε αυτή την είδηση και ενθαρρύνετε τους εφήβους αλλά και τους

φίλους τους να συμμετάσχουν. Για την συμμετοχή δεν είναι απαραίτητο να

είναι κάποιος και μαθητής/μαθήτρια του Κατηχητικού Σχολείου. Η συνάντηση, αρχίζοντας

από την επόμενη εβδομάδα, θα πραγματοποιείται στο χωλ του ναού σε μία από τις τάξεις

του Κατηχητικού, αμέσως μετά τη Θεία Κοινωνία. Όλοι οι έφηβοι είναι ευπρόσδεκτοι. Θα

προσφέρονται σνακς και αναψυκτικά.

NEW THIS YEAR: Teen Corner for ages 14 and up is a round-table discussion group led by

Kosta Stavrianeas who has many years of experience teaching Orthodoxy to this age group. Various

challenging teen issues will be discussed from a refreshing Orthodox perspective with the goal of

inspiring our youth through the deepening of their understanding and practice of our faith. Please

spread the word and encourage your teens (& their friends) to attend. Sunday School registration is

not a requirement to join this group. It will take place in the Church Hall in one of the classrooms

after Holy Communion. All teens are welcome! Snacks & refreshments will be provided.

Epistle of St. Paul’s Letter to Titus: 3:8-15

Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of our fathers. Verse: For you are just in all you have done.

TITUS, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that

those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these

are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies,

dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man

who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him,

knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned.

When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis,

for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and

Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply

themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful.

All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith.

The Gospel Reading: St. Luke: 8: 5-15

The Lord said this parable: "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some

fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some

fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell

among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew,

and yielded a hundredfold." And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said,

"To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in

parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable

is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the

devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved.

And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these

have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell

among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the

cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good

soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring

forth fruit with patience." As he said these things, he cried out "He who has ears to hear, let him

hear."

Όχι Τι αλλά Γιατί

Ο Δρ. Gilbert Wrenn, πρώην εκπαιδευτικός ψυχολόγος στο Πανεπιστήμιο της

Μινεσότα, είπε κάποτε ότι «Στο θέμα των προσωπικών σχέσεων, είναι σημαντικό να

κατανοήσουμε όχι τόσο το τι κάνει ένα άτομο όσο το γιατί το κάνει. Εμείς κρίνουμε

βάσει της εξωτερικής συμπεριφοράς, ωστόσο, ο βασικός παράγοντας δεν είναι αυτός,

σε όλες τις περιπτώσεις. Το σημαντικό ερώτημα είναι γιατί ένας άνθρωπος κάνει ό,τι

κάνει αλλά, τις πιο πολλές φορές, αυτό δεν το ξέρουμε.»

Κάποτε, ένας άνθρωπος πέταξε έναν κάδο με νερό στο Μακεδόνα βασιλιά

Αρχέλαο. Εκείνος δεν είπε τίποτα αλλά συνέχισε να κάνει ό,τι έκανε και πριν με την ίδια

ηρεμία που είχε και πριν δεχτεί τον κάδο με το νερό. Όταν ένας φίλος του τον ρώτησε

πώς μπορεί να συμπεριφέρεται τόσο ήρεμα ο Αρχέλαος απάντησε σχετικά με τον

άνθρωπο που του πέταξε το νερό: «Δεν πέταξε το νερό σε μένα αλλά στον άνθρωπο που

νόμιζε πως ήμουν.»

Εμείς κρίνουμε δίχως να γνωρίζουμε. Ακόμα και αν ένα άτομο έχει κάνει

δημόσια ένα έγκλημα, δεν μπορούμε να ξέρουμε ότι αυτό το άτομο δεν θα μετανοήσει ή

εάν δεν έχει, ήδη, μετανοήσει και στο τέλος ότι δε θα γίνει ένας από εκείνους, που για

την επιστροφή τους, χαίρονται οι άγγελοι στον ουρανό. Γι’ αυτό και είπε ο Χριστός:

«Μην κρίνετε.»

Ο ΑΓΙΟΣ ΛΟΥΚΑΣ ο Ευαγγελιστής

Ο Eυαγγελιστής Λουκάς καταγόταν από την Αντιόχεια και ήταν ελληνικής

καταγωγής. Ο Aπ. Παύλος μας πληροφορεί ότι ο Λουκάς ήταν γιατρός. Γνώριζε,

επίσης, να ζωγραφίζει και, όπως είναι γνωστό, σ’ αυτόν αποδίδονται και εικόνες

της Παναγίας μία, από τις οποίες βρίσκεται, σήμερα, στην Μονή του Μεγάλου

Σπηλαίου.

Ο Λουκάς, μπορεί να μην υπήρξε ένας από τους δώδεκα Αποστόλους,

έδρασε, όμως, σαν Απόστολος. Έλαμψε ως άριστος συνεργάτης της διακονίας τού

Απ. Παύλου γεγονός που αναφέρει ο Απ. Παύλος στην Β! προς Τιμόθεον επιστολή

του όπου γράφει: «Λουκάς έστι μόνος μετ’ εμού» (κεφ. δ΄ στιχ. 11). Ο Απ. Παύλος

προβάλλει τον Λουκά ως παράδειγμα τέλειας αφοσίωσης στον αγώνα του για τη

διάδοση του Ευαγγελίου.

Ο Λουκάς έγραψε, επίσης, το τρίτο, κατά σειράν, Ευαγγέλιο της Καινής

Διαθήκης καθώς και τις Πράξεις των Αποστόλων. Και τα δύο αποτελούν υπηρεσία

ανυπολόγιστης αξίας.

Σύμφωνα με διάφορες πηγές ο Λουκάς, μετά τον θάνατο του Απ. Παύλου,

δίδαξε το Ευαγγέλιο στη Δαλματία, Ιταλία, αρχαία Γαλλία και στην Ελλάδα (Αχαϊα

και Βοιωτία). Λέγεται ότι πέθανε με μαρτυρικό θάνατο. Το 357 το λείψανό του

μεταφέρθηκε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη στο ναό των Αγίων Αποστόλων.

SAINT LUKE the Apostle and Evangelist

October 18 The Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke was a Gentile from Antioch by birth, and

a physician by profession. He was a fellow worker of Paul’s: the plural “we” (Acts 20:6)

indicates Luke was with Paul as he traveled the coast of Asia Minor on his way to

Jerusalem. Luke has left us with two New Testament books: the Gospel According to

St. Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.

St. Luke's Gospel was written in Greek, from Greece or Asia Minor in the years

A.D. 70-80. In the preliminary verses (1:1-3), St. Luke precisely sets forth the purpose

of his work. He proposes to record, in chronological order, everything known by

Christians about Jesus Christ and His teachings. By doing this, he provided a firmer

historical basis for Christian teaching (1:4).

The Acts of the Apostles, which is a continuation of the four Gospels, speaks

about the works and the fruits of the holy Apostles after the Ascension of the Savior. At

the center of the narrative is the Council of the holy Apostles at Jerusalem in the year 51,

a Church event of great significance, which resulted in the separation of Christianity

from Judaism and its independent dissemination into the world (Acts 15:6-29). The

theological focus of the Book of Acts is the coming of the Holy Spirit, Who will guide

the Church "into all truth" (John 16:13) until the Second Coming of Christ.

Tradition credits St. Luke with painting the first icons of the Mother of God. He

also painted icons of the First-Ranked Apostles Peter and Paul. It is said that St. Luke

lived some eighty-six years and was martyred in Achaia, perhaps in Patras, the capital of

this district.

Not What But Why

Dr. Gilbert Wrenn, former educational psychologist at the University of

Minnesota, said once “In this matter of personal relationships, it is important that

we understand not so much what a person does as why he does it. We judge on the

basis of outward behavior. But this is not the most important factor in any instance.

The important question is why a person does what he does. And most often we

don’t know this.”

A man once flung a pail of water over Archelaos the Macedonian king.

Archelaos said nothing at all. He went about his business as calmly as before. When

a friend asked him how he could bear it so serenely, Archelaos replied, “He threw

the water not on me, but on the man he thought I was.”

We judge without knowledge. Even if a person has committed a public

crime, we do not know that he may not repent-or even that he has not already

repented, and become one of those over whom the angels rejoice. Therefore, says

Jesus, “Judge not.”

«Φθινοπωρινό τσάι» κατά την οποία θα πραγματοποιηθεί και Γενική Συνέλευση. Όλες

οι κυρίες και οι δεσποινίδες της Κοινότητάς μας είναι ευπρόσδεκτες. Θα υπάρξει μια

σύντομη παρουσίαση των προγραμμάτων και πρωτοβουλιών μας, καθώς και η

δυνατότητα να μάθετε και να γίνετε μέλος ομάδων ειδικού ενδιαφέροντος όπως:

Φιλανθρωπία και Υποχρεώσεις, Κύκλος Ραψίματος και Χειροτεχνίας, Μαγειρική και

Ζαχαροπλαστική. Αν επιθυμείτε μπορείτε να φέρετε μια φίλη σας. Τσάι, καφές και ένα

ελαφρύ γεύμα θα σερβιριστεί. Για να επιβεβαιώσετε την παρουσία σας παρακαλούμε

"Βραδιά για πλέξιμο" Η Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης προγραμματίζει μια

συνάντηση όπου οι κυρίες θα πλέξουν πετσέτες, κασκόλ, σκουφιά και γάντια.

Οι κυρίες που δεν επιθυμούν να πλέξουν μπορούν να δωρήσουν νήματα.

Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης – Pajama Drive

Η Φιλόπτωχος Αδελφότης, για τέταρτη κατά σειρά χρονιά, διοργανώνει Pajama Drive

και σας καλεί να την στηρίξετε. Όπως και τα προηγούμενα χρόνια, η προσπάθεια αυτή

αποβλέπει στο να συγκεντρωθούν πιτζάμες για παιδιά των οποίων οι οικογένειες

αντιμετωπίζουν φτώχεια, εθισμό, ενδοοικογενειακή βία και θέματα ψυχικής υγείας.

Μέσω αυτού του προγράμματος, μπορείτε να συμβάλετε σε έναν «πιο ζεστό και πιο

όμορφο ύπνο» για αυτά τα παιδιά. Οι πιτζάμες πρέπει να είναι για παιδιά ηλικίας 3

μηνών έως και 12 ετών και, επιπλέον, να είναι καινούργιες και

αμεταχείριστες. Μπορείτε να αφήνετε τις πιτζάμες: τις Κυριακές στο χωλ του ναού, στο

γραφείο του ιερού ναού κατά τη διάρκεια της εβδομάδας και στο Ελληνικό Σχολείο τα

Σάββατα. Εάν δεν έχετε χρόνο να ψωνίσετε οι ίδιοι, μπορείτε να δώσετε τη δωρεά σας

στην Φιλόπτωχο που θα φροντίσει κάνει την αγορά εκ μέρους σας.

Philoptochos Fall Social Tea and General Assembly-November 5th

The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society of Ottawa will be hosting

a Fall Social Tea and General Assembly on Sunday, November

5th from 1:00-3:00 pm following the Divine Liturgy in the

Church Hall. All ladies of the community are welcome to join us.

There will be a brief presentation on our programs and initiatives

including an opportunity to learn about and/or join in on our

special interest groups such as: Charities and Obligations,

Stitchery and Craft Circle, Cooking and Baking, among others. Please feel free to

bring a friend. Tea, coffee and a light lunch will be served. Hoping to see you there!

"CALLING ALL KNITTERS!" Be a part of something bigger than ourselves. The

Greek Ladies Philoptochos are knitting dish-cloths, scarves, toques and mittens. Non

Philoptochos - Pajama Drive

Please help the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society for the 4th

year provide new cozy pajamas to children in need in Ottawa

and the Greater Ottawa Valley. Through the Pajama Drive, you

are contributing to a warmer, more loving bedtime. The

pajamas are to be new and unused, a complete set from

newborn to 12 years old for boys and girls. Please feel free to

drop off pajamas on Sundays in the Church Hall; during the

week in the Church office; or on Saturdays at Greek

School. No time to shop, please make a donation to

Philoptochos for pajamas and we will buy them for you.
