Marcos Arakaki is one of the most prominent conductors in the new generation of Brazilian musicians. With a unique combination of intensity, enthusiasm and technical clarity, Mr. Arakaki has steadily built a reputation for his dynamic concerts and long-term orchestra building. Mr. Arakaki has led orchestras throughout the Brazil including Minas Gerais Philharmonic, São Paulo Symphony, Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, Claudio Santoro Theather Symphony, Paraná Symphony and several others. He served as assistant conductor of Brazilian Symphony Orchestra from 2007 – 2010 and has since returned for several engagements. Recorded with Brazilian Symphony a composition by Philip Glass as soundtrack of Nosso Lar film.

He was selected to spend the summer of 2005 studying with David Zinman and Murry Sidlin at the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen and participated in masterclasses with Asher Fisch, Leon Fleisher, David Robertson and Leonard Slatkin. Mr. Arakaki also attended masterclasses with Kurt Masur in Brazil and Charles Dutoit in Buenos Aires.

He is the winner of Camargo Guarnieri Prize from Campos do Jordão International Music Festival – 2009 and was prizewinner in the First Eleazar de Carvalho Conducting Competition sponsored by Orquestra Petrobras Sinfônica in Rio de Janeiro – 2001. In 2007 Mr. Arakaki was semifinalist at 3rd Eduardo Mata International Conducting Competition based in Mexico conducting the Orquestra Filarmônica da Universidade Autônoma do México, OFUNAM.

Committed to working with new music, Mr. Arakaki has conducted over 40 orchestral works in World Premiers. Marcos has been obtaining great recognition from the critic due to the amount of his repertoire with special attention for Brazilian and Latin American music. He is former Music Director of two brazilian orchestras: Paraiba Symphony Orchestra (2007–2010) and Paraíba University Symphony Orchestra (2013–2015).

Mr. Arakaki has collaborated with artists such as Sergio Tiempo, Gabriela Montero, Anna Vinitiskaya, Sofya Gulyak Ricardo Castro, José Feghali, Angela Cheng, Rachel Barton-Pine, Chloë Hanpslic, Luis Fílip, Günter Klauss, Eddie Daniels, David Gérrier, Yamandú Costa among much others.

Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Mr. Arakaki began studying the violin when he was eight years old. In 1998 he received a bachelor of music in violin performance from UNESP – São Paulo State University, and in 2004 he received a master degree in orchestral conducting from University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he studied with Lanfranco Marcelletti. 2016 marks Mr. Arakaki’s sixth season as Associate Conductor of Minas Gerais Philharmonic.

During the three years (2008–2010) under his leadership, Mr. Arakaki turned Brazilian Youth Symphony Orchestra in one of the most prominent youth orchestras in Brazil with great recognition from public and critics.
