How to File a Card in...25 Places at Once
For the busy scientist, engineer, teacher, business man or student who has to keep basic information on file for use in a variety of categories, the Geniac P M U (Portable Memory Unit) is specially designed.
Information retrieval systems for personal use or small card flies (from 1000-10,000) with abstracts, original articles or information are usually cumbersome, expensive and out of the question for small budgets. But our P M U is low cost information retrieval system tha t is as fast or faster than much more expensive units.
Low initial cost, only S19.95 for the basic kit with two hundred cards, notcher, sorting rods and coding instructions, low maintenance with new cards costing S4.00 per 100 or S30.00 per 1000, are combined with ready access to thousands of categories. No electrical vibrators or mechanical shakers are needed. No parts to go out of operation. Sorting is by rod and is remarkably rapid.
Sorting rates are conservatively 400 per minute and this is for simultaneous sorting of at least. 25 categories, using extra rods.
Information is coded into the cards by notching prepunched holes around the edge of the card. The user need have no previous knowledge of coding and may choose as many categories as is necessary.
To use you prepare an abstract on the card or aetually paste on small articles, microprints, etc. Once coded the card is filed at random and will automatically appear during sorts for the categories it contains. The possibilities of the P M U information retrieval system are unlimited and enable the small to medium size information file to compete in flexibility with extremely expensive electronic sorting devices. I t serves as a useful adjunct to company integrate information systems.
The Geniac Portable Memory Unit and information retrieval system is a quality products design for long use. The basic P M U contains a notching hand punch, sorting rods. 200 cards and is only SI 9.95. Add 60£ postage and handling in the United States, Sl.fiO abroad. In NYC add 3 % City Sales Tax. Additional cards are S4.00/100, S30.00/1.000. File cabinet $8.00.

Is a new product or product improvement hiding in these applications of petroleum waxes?
About the author Lowell Crews* knowledge of the applications for wax comes from more than 10 years'* research on the uses of the product. Crews is a group leader in American OiVs research laboratory. He holds a masters degree in chemistry from Oklahoma State College.
ik -k * * Petroleum waxes have enormous undiscovered potentials in the development of new products in the specialties field and for the improvement of present products. Here are six applications of waxes that may give you ideas.
1- Chlorinated waxes. Paraffin wax, reacted with chlorine, is extensively used for flameproofing canvas tarpaulins, tenting, and as an ingredient of light colored floor tiles.
2. Match manufacture. Treatment of the matchstick—either paper or wood —helps the flame ignite the stick by supplying an easily vaporized hydrocarbon fuel.
3. Electrical equipment. Since wax has the electrical insulating properties of oil, extensive uses are found for it as
insulation. It is likewise widely used as a moisture-vapor barrier. Still other properties extend its use in the electrical field. It is employed in impregnating cloth and paper insulation. In asphalt-impregnated cotton insulation, wax is used to reduce viscosity of the i m p r e g n a t i n g c o m p o u n d . In condensers, it is used to drive out moisture and to support condenser elements. In dry cells, wax is used because it resists chemical reaction. In cable splicing, wax drives moisture out of the splice or junction. It is also used to hold the joint in position.
4. Metal cas t ing . "Investment" or "Lost Wax" casting is a widely used process for casting metal parts whose intricate shapes would be difficult, if not impossible, to machine. The wax makes possible extremely fine tolerances. Wax is also used in castings where vents are needed to hold in gases and then release them.
5. Textiles and cordage. Wax binds protruding fibers to their cores. As a

coating to thread, it improves appearance, imparts desired stiffness, reduces wear and fraying.
6. Food processing. The use of wax paper for food wraps and the use of wax for carton coating are familiar applications of this versatile material. Less well known is the protective coating of foods, vegetables and fruits with wax. Because a thin film of wax on the surface of plant tissue effectively inhibits moisture loss and wilting, some citrus fruits, apples, cantaloupes, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and eggplant are marketed today with a coating of wax emulsion. Wax coatings are also used to protect cheese, rutabagas, turnips and parsnips. In addition to its protective action, wax also gives fruits and vegetables an attractive sales-appealing gloss.

SIMPLE, SAFE,
PRECISE LABORATORY PIPETTERS!
LaPine Clinac Pipetters provide complete safety from all types of contamination by eliminating mouth pipetting. They give superb, precise control with a simple, easy-to-use thumb roller.
These pipetters allow the pipette angle to be changed so the operators hand can be held at a natural angle. Pipette graduations can be seen easily from the best position for greater accuracy in skimming off minute quantities of liquid or in delivering fractions of a drop with an accuracy of .01 ml or better.
LaPine Clinac Pipetters can be used in either right or left hand without alteration.
