School class during break George asks Maria: -What is the matter with you? -What don’t you go out to play? -Are you sick or something? Maria avoids answering & makes some excuses. George 4 Maria Maria looks scared on her way to the school toilet. Bullies 3 & 4 follow her and lock her in. She cries. They laugh. Helen Bully 3 Ashley Bully 4 5 Ashram Teacher (Ms Diamond) He is a newcomer. He doesn’t speak English well. His parents work hard to make ends meet. He can’t afford to buy new notebooks and pencils. In class he sits between Bullies 5 and 6. School class Everybody is seated. The teacher is writing on the wall. The pupils are copying it into their notebooks. Bullies 5 & 6 draw lines with Ashram’s pencils on his notebook. Ashram protests without making any noise. They take his pencils, throw them away and sit down pretending nothing is the matter. (No answer) If it is nobody’s, I can keep it, can’t I? (Ashram raises his hand.)No, Ms Diamond. It is mine and it is my only one.-If it is your only one, what is doing on the floor next to my feet?Ashram is thinking whether to tell the truth or not. Bullies make the cut-throat gesture and he decides to lie. -I’ve dropped it, Ms Diamond. I’m sorry.Ms Diamond hands it back. She looks puzzled.
