Greeting Sorors

Kudos to Soror Ashley Peterson and her Debutante Committee for an informative and elegant Acceptance Tea. Thanks to all the Sorors who came out to support the kickoff of another Debutante Season. The Debs looked beautiful and were excited to be a part of this annual Debutante tradition.

Our 2015 “Simply Fabulous Gala” (Peppermint Ball) promises to be a wonderful evening of music, dancing and fellowship. I hope to see my sisters step out in grand style to partake in what is surely to be a grand time had by all.

As we embark on the holiday season let’s remember that we all have so much to be thankful for. Reach out to a Soror who has been missing from our sisterhood. A card, phone call or text goes a mighty long way. The hustle and bustle of the holi-days can be overwhelming and we all could use some sisterly love.

Wishing you and your family a joyful and blessed holiday season.

Delta Love Always

Delta Emergency Response Team DAC’s Delta ERT's key word in an emergency is HADD Help A Delta Dear

Disasters can bring about significant stress. This is espe-cially true if you have experienced a previous disaster. The good news is that many people have experience coping with stressful life events and are naturally resili-ent—meaning we are designed to bounce back from diffi-cult times. Here is some information on how to recognize your current feelings and tips for taking care of the emo-tional health of you, your family and your friends. When we experience a disaster or other stressful life event, we can have a variety of reactions, all of which can be com-mon responses to difficult situations. These reactions can include:

❏ Feeling physically and mentally drained.

❏ Having difficulty making decisions or staying focused on topics.

❏ Becoming easily frustrated on a frequent basis.

❏ Frustration occurring more quickly and more often.

❏ Arguing more with family and friends.

❏ Feeling tired, sad, numb, lonely or worried.

❏ Experiencing changes in appetite or sleep patterns. Most of these reactions are temporary and will go away over time. Try to accept whatever reactions you may have. Look for ways to take one step at a time and focus on taking care of your disaster related needs and those of your family. Getting ourselves and our lives back in a rou-tine that is comfortable for us takes time.

❏ Take care of your safety. Find a safe place to stay and make sure your physical health needs and those of your family are addressed. Seek medical attention, if neces-sary.

❏ Eat healthy. During times of stress, it is important that you maintain a balanced diet and drink plenty of water.

❏ Get some rest. With so much to do, it may be difficult to have enough time to rest or get adequate sleep. Giving your body and mind a break can boost your ability to cope with the stress you may be experiencing.

❏ Stay connected with family and friends. Giving and getting support is one of the most important things you can do.

❏ Be patient with yourself and with those around you. Recognize that everyone is stressed and may need some time to put their feelings and thoughts in order.

❏ Set priorities. Tackle tasks in small steps.

❏ Gather information about assistance and resources that will help you and your family members meet your disaster-related needs.

❏ Stay positive. Remind yourself of how you’ve success-fully gotten through difficult times in the past. Reach out when you need support, and help others when they need it. Let Your Family Know You’re Safe If your community experiences a disaster, register on the American Red Cross Safe and Well Web site available through RedCross.org to let your family and friends know about your welfare. If you don’t have Internet access, call 1-866-GET-INFO to register yourself and your family. Be Red Cross Ready Taking Care of Your Emotional Health after a Disaster Be aware of what you may be feeling now. Take action. If you still don’t feel better. Each positive action you take can help you feel better and more in control. For more information on disaster and emergency preparedness, visit RedCross.org. Many people have experience coping with stressful life events and typically feel better after a few days. Others find that their stress does not go away as quickly as they would like and it influences their rela-tionships with their family, friends and others. If you find yourself or a loved one experiencing some of the feelings and reactions listed below for 2 weeks or longer, this may be a sign that you need to reach out for additional assis-tance. • Crying spells or bursts of anger • Difficulty eating • Difficulty sleeping • Losing interest in things • Increased physical symptoms such as headaches or stomachaches • Fatigue • Feeling guilty, helpless or hopeless • Avoiding family and friends For additional resources, contact your local Red Cross Disaster Mental Health or community mental health pro-fessional. One big holiday completed – one to go. Last month we provided tips on how to keep Thanksgiving spending under control. This month we will look at ways to control our expenditures for Christmas gifts.

1. Start Shopping Early. Christmas happens the same time every year - December 25th - so there is no reason to be blindsided when it arrives. Shop all year long for Christmas presents and take advantage of sales.

2. Make a List. Make a list of the people you would like to give a Christmas present to this year. Oth-erwise, you can quickly run out of money before you have purchased for half of those on your list.

3. Set a Spending Limit for Each Person. Determine how much you are willing to spend on each per-son and stick to that amount. Once you have set your limit for each person, you will have created your budg-et for Christmas gifts.

4. Choose Shopping Destinations Wisely. Stay out of Saks Fifth Avenue if you are on a Target budg-et. Otherwise you will spend more than what you have allocated.

5. Send Gifts Early. Buy gifts early and send them early enough (at least one week before Christmas) so that you are reducing the amount of money spent for priority and overnight shipping.

6. Buy Holiday Cards in Bulk. One Christmas card by Hallmark can cost you at least $3.00 per card. A box of 15 cards can run about $5.00. You can find the bulk cards in any discount store such as Target or Wal-Mart.

7. Re-use Last Year’s Wrapping Paper. You can easily use leftover paper, boxes and bags from last year if they are in good condition. Also, think outside the box when it comes to wrapping paper – Sunday comics, old maps, and extra wallpaper can be used to make a gift look very enticing.

8. Be Creative. Handmade gifts are really special and in many cases can be less expensive than buy-ing gifts.

So, think about these things as you shop for your family and friends. This season of giving will be much more joyful if we have kept our spending under control. Truly, “If we take care of the pennies…”
