“We had the greatest time as a chapter during Recruitment this past year! Our friendships grew deeper, our chapter bond grew stronger, and our desire to show the PNMs [prospective new members] our love for Alpha Gam was achieved through being genuine and celebrating every single girl who walked through our doors. I could not be more thankful to have Sadie by my side throughout it all, she’s not only a dear friend, but a fearless leader for our chapter.”

Recruitment Week Party Infoby Lindsey Allred, VP Recruitment

Ice Water Tea Round: 20 parties, 84 girls per partyDecorations were not allowed this round; however, this was our one chance to interact with every single girl coming through recruitment before the big cuts begin. We strove to distinguish ourselves in our conversation.

Philanthropy Round: 9 parties, 66 girls per partyThis round was different from last year! Playing off of our Meals on Wheels service, we had a large, whimsical backdrop that included a retro Volkswagen van painted on it, complete with live floral arrangements framing it. We also had old-school metal lunch boxes hand-painted with fun prints to represent the service we do through Blessings in a Backpack. Large, canvas photographs from different philanthropy events and service projects throughout the year were displayed around the room as well.

Sisterhood Round: 4 parties, 55 girls per partySisterhood Round had the same elegant, garden party theme it had last year. The goal of this round was to showcase Alpha Gam’s personality and the friendships we have cultivated. We had ottomans with scrapbooks recapping our year’s successes and highlights, as well as hanging lanterns, a moss runway, beautiful floral arrangements, and a flower wall consisting of large, paper flowers hanging on sheer curtains that framed the chapter room.

Pref Round: 3 parties, 44 girls per partyThis round has not changed from the past couple of years, as it seems to work perfectly for us! It was serene and absolutely beautiful, with 2 large floral arrangements, sheer curtains framing the room, vase centerpieces, and Alpha Gam engraved glasses and linens.

Creator of Redeemed Belts

While on vacation one summer, Patti Sowell Joyner bought a bracelet made out of an old belt. She says, "I loved that it had a former life. I was so intrigued that I raided all my closets for belts and began making my own." Now she hunts for unique belts and decorative items and flea markets and thrift shops. She takes castoff items and makes them into beautiful, unique pieces of wearable art. Isaiah 43:1 is her inspiration for her business, Redeemed Belts: "I redeem them much like God redeems us."

Patti's beautiful bracelets are available in Auburn at LocAL Market inside J&M Bookstore on College St. You may also message Patti through Instagram: www.instagram.com/pattijoyner for more information.

Proceeds from the bracelets Patti makes go to Mescal's Childrens's Center of Hope in Luanda, Kenya. Mescal's is changing the course of an entire community. Now they are building a school, and Patti is helping them do it. You can go online to read about this ministry at MesalsKids.org. Our Inspirational Governor Kay Ellen Ivey: Leading the Way for Women in Alabama

Kay Ellen Ivey grew up in Camden, Alabama, where she won Willcox County's Junior Miss pageant in 1963. That same year she went to Auburn University, where she pledged Alpha Gamma Delta. She was initiated with her pledge class in 1964.

Kay was an active participant in campus life at Auburn. During her freshman year, she was elected senator for the main Student Government Association Senate, as opposed to the separate senate for women. She served 2 terms as senator. She was Student Government Association secretary during her junior year. As a senior, Kay was the first female elected SGA Vice-President. Kay was also a member of the 1966 Homecoming Court, was selected for Who's Who, and was a member of several organizations, including the Academic Honesty Committee , the Law Society, and the Judiciary Council. Kay graduated from Auburn in 1967, the same year Lurleen Wallace became the first female governor of Alabama.

Thank you to the Governor's office , AL.com, and the Auburn University Glomerata digital archives for information and for some of the photos used for this article.

Above: Alpha Gams Alice Henderson Bell (center) and Elizabeth Jernigan Rogers (right) greeting the Governor when she visited Lee County this fall.

After college , Kay was a bank officer and a high school teacher. She entered politics, serving as the Reading Clerk of the Alabama House of Representatives, when Joseph McCorquodale was Speaker of the House. She worked as Assistant Director of the Alabama Development Office, where she helped create new jobs and promote economic development in Alabama.

Kay became the State Treasurer of Alabama in 2002. She was the first Republican elected to this office since Reconstruction. Kay was re-elected in 2006. As State Treasurer, Kay made the office more efficient and was open about how state funds were spent. She ran for Lieutenant Governor in 2010 and won, making her the first Republican female to ever hold that office.

On November 4, 2014, Kay was the first Republican Lieutenant Governor re-elected to the office. As Lt. Governor, she served as President of the Senate. The Lt. Governor's primary Constitutional duty is to preside over legislative proceedings of the upper House.

On April 10, 2017, Kay became the 54th Governor of the State of Alabama, replacing Dr. Robert Bentley upon his resignation. On November 7, 2018, Kay was elected Governor of the State of Alabama by general election. As Governor, Kay has brought conservative leadership, new lobs, and new business to the state. She has received numerous awards and is one of the country's favorite governors.

Alpha Gam Philanthropy, Friendship & Fun!

The Beat Bama Food Drive is an annual tradition where Auburn University and The University of Alabama compete to see which school can bring in the most cans. Auburn's cans are donated to the Food Bank of East Alabama, and Bama's cans are donated to the West Alabama Food Bank. In the 25 years of this good natured competition, students and alumnae have collected a total of over 6 million pounds for the people of Alabama.

Alpha Gam Alums attend Dinner at Hornsby Farms in support of Nourish AL

Nourish, AL was created by Alpha Gam Beth Hornsby, owner of Hornsby Farms, to address food insecurity in East Alabama. In this community, one in four children go home to empty pantries and do not know where their next meal will come from. Childhood is a critical developmental time and healthy nutritious foods are very important. Nourish AL's goal is to help local families bridge the gap during tough times and give them healthy local fruits and vegetables. Each week produce baskets are delivered to families in need. A Letter from the Editor Hi Alpha Gam Alums!

I have so enjoyed editing The Chatterbox these past 2 years! The alumnae and collegiate chapters are both very busy, so there is a lot of info, and I always have trouble paring it down!

The collegians are involved in everything imaginable on campus while staying #1 in grades! The alumnae are about to celebrate 80 years of Gamma Delta Chapter at Auburn in February 2019! The alum chapter officers are working hard to make that a great experience for the hundreds of Gamma Delta alumnae planning to attend! Remember that registration ends on JANUARY 10, 2019!!

This year we obtained a new mailing address and created a PayPal acount for paying dues. We post events on eVite and EventBrite. We created a new website and worked hard to post events on social media. Check us out on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

My Experience as Chapter Presidentby Sadie Argo

The Gamma Delta Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta is an incredible group of women who inspire me every day to lead them well. Being the chapter president has been such an honor, but ultimately it has been a place of serving the Lord. I did not know what plans He had for me coming into such a strong chapter full of involved, intelligent women; so when I felt the call to run for chapter president, I was nervous. Who was I to lead a chapter full of leaders? The Lord has completely wrecked what I thought I could do for this chapter, and changed it to what He could do for this chapter. He has used it completely for His glory, and thankfully, as president, I get to watch Him carry out His plans every day! I always say that this chapter makes my job as president easier because it is a lot easier to lead women who are driven, who want the best for the chapter, and who love the Lord wholeheartedly. That being said, this job has not necessarily been easy. This chapter has faced some trials, but it was cool to see how the Lord united the chapter to be stronger than ever.

This chapter is an impeccable group of women who strive to be their best selves every day. They seriously never cease to amaze me. From achieving number one in grades year after year for twenty-one years, to having Miss Homecoming and Miss Auburn, to having three cheerleaders and two War Eagle Girls, to having large groups from each pledge class go on mission trips every year, these women represent Alpha Gam so well. I seriously do not understand how some of them fit in all that they do into a day’s time. I look up to countless members of this chapter because of all that they do, but also how they live their lives. This group is respected on Auburn’s campus, so when you say you’re an Alpha Gam, there is a “repertoire” that comes with it. These women are well known, looked up to, and loved on this campus. I could go on and on about this chapter, but to sum it up they are incredible women who love each other well and love the Lord more.

As you can see, I am honored to be a part of this chapter, but even more honored to serve this chapter. Needless to say, being chapter president will be so beneficial for my future. I have learned how to lead others, how to receive constructive criticism, how to have hard conversations, and how to love people better. I learned more about myself and have grown more as a person serving in this role, and I am so grateful. I am also thankful for the opportunities it has provided me with because I feel even more equipped for professional roles after college. Alpha Gam has provided me with the best experience the past four years of college, and for that I will be ever grateful!

Sadie Argo Elected Miss Homecoming 2018

This fall Gamma Delta President Sadie Argo was elected Miss Homecoming for Auburn University. Sadie's platform was "Up with Argo," and the focus of it was Project Uplift, raising awareness of this outreach at Auburn and helping develop a scholarship for a Project Uplift student to eventually attend Auburn University. Not only did Sadie raise money for the Project Uplift Scholarship, but Project Uplift reported an significant increase in collegiate volunteers. Congratulations to Sadie and to her amazing Alpha Gam campaign team!
