Facere et DocereTo do and To teach
A note from the PrincipalLast weekend I was informed of the passing of Mr John Moffat. John taught at the College from 1977 to 2007 and is remembered fondly by past staff, students and parents.
I quote from Tim Foley from the class of 1997:
There are very few other people, if anyone, who have contributed more to the life of St Laurence’s College than John Moffat.Senior English and Maths teacher, College Annual Editor, Debating and Public Speaking coach, the man who co-ordinated those crazy school photo days (whilst in his full academic robes) and 1st XI coach, just to name just a few of his roles. There are not many educators who are brilliant and passionate enough to teach Shakespeare and Joseph Conrad in the morning, complex Maths in the afternoon and then coach top level school cricket after school.
Tim concludes: My life is so much richer for him having played such a big part in it. Rest In Peace Sir.
I acknowledge and thank John for his service to our community, and send my sincere condolences to his wife, Pat, daughter Anne and son-in-law Cameron and Grandson, MacKinnon (Year 5 at SLC). There is no one quite like “Moff ’. A final mass to celebrate John’s life will be held on Monday at 10.30am at St Peter Chanel Church, The Gap.
Old Boys NewsI wish to congratulate Mr Joe Zagami who turned 100 on Tuesday. Joe was from the class of 1935, though he finished Year 10 in 1933.
Gifts from Noel MatherThis week I received several gifts in the form of memorabilia from Mr Noel Mather who was a teacher of the College from 1976 – 2003. Noel was an ITAD teacher, Head of Sport, Sports Coach, particularly as First XV Rugby Coach and Rugby Master. Noel has kindly donated many photos and some unique Jerseys. Of particular note was a framed photograph of all first teams from 1978 to 1987 from the Old Boys. These pieces of history are priceless and it is obvious to me the high regard that the boys had for Noel. I acknowledge this contribution to our Museum.
The Lauries Giving ProgramAs has been communicated at Parent Information sessions in recent weeks, the College has embarked on a new giving program. Should parents and donors wish to contribute to our Giving Program, it is possible to nominate if money goes to the Old Boys’ Foundation or the College Building Fund. The Foundation assists those boys who would not be able to attend the College due to financial contributions. The Building Fund will have a focus to provide shade in the College quadrangle. Any donation is welcome as we strive to maintain affordability for all.
Senior Information EveningI thank Mr Herbert and our Pastoral staff for facilitating our Senior Information Evening. It is important for our Year 11 & 12 families to be aware of our continued focus on academic excellence under the current system and for our Year 10 families to be aware of the measures that the College has taken for the new curriculum model affecting boys in Year 10.
P&F MeetingOn Monday evening the Parents and Friends met at the College for the first meeting of this year. The Agenda was well prepared and I thank Mrs Michelle Prendergast for her leadership here. Mrs Natalie Casey also sought feedback from all parents about our College Reporting System. It was great to see our parents engage in this.Mrs Casey has also been presenting updates at all information evenings, explaining how parents can access information about their child at the College, including the progressive reporting process. The meeting concluded with a tour of the Primary Precinct.
Upcoming EventsI wish all boys and staff well as they attend our annual Music Camp next week. I also wish our swimmers well at the annual SLC Age Championships events to be held at Yeronga Pool. Best wishes to our cricketers and volleyball players this week as they play St Patrick’s College.
Have a good week!

Identity MattersThis week we begin the Lenten journey into Easter. It is hard to believe that Easter is but 40 days away! We are asked during Lent to
leave aside life as usual and, in the spirit of prayer and generosity, to renew our relationship with Jesus. It is a time for taking stock of our
lives. It is a time of reassessing our attitudes and the way we treat other people. It is a time to see where we stand before our God.
We learn from our past and seek to be better people. Beginning today, we turn to God for forgiveness and look forward to Easter and
the promise of new life.
As part of our Lenten journey each year, we join in solidarity to raise awareness and funds during Project Compassion as we
celebrate ‘A Just Future’ (Project Compassion theme for 2018) for all. As this is the Year of Youth, we work towards good outcomes by
empowering young people to be positive change agents for their communities and build a world of peace. During our Mass on Ash
Wednesday, we heard readings from the prophet Joel, from St Paul writing to the Corinthians and from the Gospel of Matthew. These
readings remind us of our Christian service promised at Baptism. The prophet Joel in the first reading says: “call the people together,
summon the community, assemble the elders, gather the children”. Today this sounds like a call to live in solidarity and to work together
as a community for the common good.
We can feel overwhelmed by the grief, sadness and heartbreaking events that we see in the daily news cycle. In the first reading the
prophet Joel invites us to let our hearts be broken because when our heart are broken then there is room for the tender compassion
of God to be released in us. Then we might truly be “ambassadors for Christ” [2 Cor 5: 20-6:2].
In living this Christ-like life, in Lent, we are asked to do three things - to practise prayer, fasting and almsgiving as outlined in the Gospel
of Matthew. Traditionally the season of Lent reminds us of the reasons why we follow the Gospel teaching: to ensure the poor are fed,
the thirsty are given drink and the poor and outcast are given welcome [Isaiah 58:6-9].
In supporting the work of Caritas through the Project Compassion campaign, we give practical expression to our call to stand in
solidarity and to support the vulnerable in our world. It is the spirit of God who calls us to this faithfulness and in this spirit we are
energized by the life and love of Jesus. If we are to create ‘A Just Future’ for all, what would that look like?
Prayer: As we approach the holy season of Lent, may the concern of the St Laurence’s College community be one of love and compassion for
all members of the human family. Guide us to act in solidarity with those most marginalized and vulnerable to injustice so together we can
work for A Just Future for all.
Amen

Pastoral MattersAs the school year develops, students should now have an idea of how their study, work, co-curricular and extra-curricular commitments balance during a usual week. The pastoral team have a plethora of resources on time management, study plans and goal setting which students can utilize to fulfil their potential, most of which can be found on Sloodle.
This week I was sent a positive educational practice from Luke McKenna who oversees a pastoral program called Unleashing Personal Potential. The article outlines a simple strategy for setting goals through passwords on electronic devices. Luke writes:
RationaleResearch in the fields of neuroscience and psychology state that goal setting actually works. The most successful people in the world set goals. A useful way to fast track our goals is to create a goal orientated password to unlock our devices. We unlock our devices several times each day. Setting a password goal, frequently reminds us of what we are striving for, bringing our top priority goal into focus, every time we unlock our device. This works because of our RAS (Reticular Activating System), in our brains. Our RAS acts as a filter for our brain - it blocks out most of the data that our brain receives every second. This allows us to hone in on the things that are most important to us. By changing all of our passwords to reinforce a goal we are trying to accomplish, we will put it top of mind, and unconsciously focus in on ways to make those things happen (Adams-Miller 2014).
Description of Positive Education Practice:1. Decide what your top priority goal is (it could be to do with school work; relationships, extracurricular, etc.).2. Next, make your goal password-ready. Be creative. Use shorthand, abbreviations, numbers. For example, if you want to achieve certain grades (3As and 2Bs in Semester 1), it could be 3A2Bsem1; or if you want to run 4km in 19 minutes (at the cross country carnival this year), the password goal could be 4k19mins. Other examples are: try1newthing2day, Read20mins, 20pushups, 1actofkindness.3. If you have access to a device take the time now to change your password.
Main message:Fast track your goal by bringing it to top of mind with a password goal.
More information for parents and students can be found on Luke McKenna’s website http://www.unleashingpersonalpotential.com.au/
The pastoral team wishes all students the best in the coming weeks. Live Jesus in our hearts… Forever.

The Urban FarmAfter the success of last year’s event, the Urban Farm once again provided a backstage activity at the Laneway Music Festival last
weekend. Our mobile green wall was taken to the festival venue, the RNA Showgrounds, to provide an opportunity for the artists and
other guests to build a living green wall. We love taking sustainability education ‘on the road’, and are very grateful to Laneway 2018
for their generous hosting of this popular backstage activity.
Real World GeographyYear 12 Geography undertook field studies recently, to help decide the most appropriate use for the vacant site located at the corner
of Scrub Rd and Greendale Way, Carindale. The data gathered will directly inform a decision-making process, and includes observations
and measurements that will help to complete a land use survey, hydrologic survey, topographic survey, demographic survey, traffic
survey, transport and connectivity survey, and local services’ survey. Back in the classroom, students will decide on the most effective
way to present the data using various digital maps, graphs, tables and photographs. This presentation of data will communicate findings
and analyses, and help to evaluate the site’s suitability for either a recreational or a retail land use. Students will make a recommenda-
tion for the most appropriate use of the site based on evidence and a set of decision-making criteria.

Ancient History NewsThis week the Year 11 Ancient History class ventured to the University of Queensland to get up close and personal with our ancient
past. This Semester we are studying the theme ‘Studies of Archaeology’ and this excursion allowed us to authentically engage in actively
studying the past in a fun and hands on manner.
We began our tour in the Antiquities Museum where we learnt about and handled ancient artefacts from Ancient Rome, Greece and
Egypt. The boys were amazed by the variety, condition and origins of the artefacts they held and even more so by the fact that they
are housed only a few kilometres away! After this wonderful experience, in the comfort of the air conditioned museum, we ventured
to the School of Archaeology’s practice site. Here the boys were able to explore their inner ‘Indiana Jones’ and practised real methods
of archaeology used to uncover the artefacts from which we develop our histories.
It was a wonderful day for all involved and has definitely sparked some interest for next week’s topic, ‘Who owns the past?’ -as we
begin to explore the issue of cultural property and the role of the museum in preserving the past - which will no doubt bring some
more wonderful discussions and responses from this astute and inquisitive class.

THE LAURIES GIVING PROGRAMIt is an exciting time at St Laurence’s College as this year we unveil a new era of giving - The Lauries Giving Program.
As communicated at the recent Parent Information evenings, The Lauries Giving Program is an opportunity for all members of the community to contribute tax-deductible gifts towards either people or property. Through the program, donations can be made towards the two tax-deductible organisations of the College - The St Laurence’s Old Boys’ Foundation who provide financial support towards students in need and the St Laurence’s College Building Fund which enables gifts towards College buildings and infrastructure.
Under the banner of The Lauries Giving Program, St Laurence’s College will be undertaking its first full community Annual Appeal this year. A gift given during the Annual Appeal will have an immediate impact towards the project of your choice. In 2018, gifts given towards the Old Boys’ Foundation will assist the ongoing support offered towards the educational costs of disadvantaged students. Gifts towards the College Building Fund will be directly attributed towards the construction of permanent shade structures and additional seating for students.
The Annual Appeal will be officially launched in Term 2 and we invite all families to support the appeal by giving what they can. For further information regarding The Lauries Giving Program, the Annual Appeal or fundraising at the College, please contact the College Director of Communications, Development and Events Helen Turner on (07) 3010 1178 or [email protected].
