Apostolos Ntelakos (1973) is showing recent work at the Museum of Folk Art and History of Pelion1, in the Topali Mansion in Makrinitsa, from the 18th of May 2014 until the 29th of June 2014. Ntelakos has studied at the Department of Fine Arts of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (Visual arts, BoA, 2006) and continued with a master’s degree in Applied Arts (Applied Arts, MoA, 2010) at the Sandberg Institute. His work focuses on the ‘traditional’ areas of the Applied Arts i.e. ceramics, glass and textile. The way however, he approaches these fields has noth-ing to do with technicalities but mostly with the ways these conceptually overlap with the so-called Fine Arts.

His first work on display is titled “Hebe / Helen”. It is a idiosyncratic documentary that records the household textles of two women of similar age, but different geographical origins and class.

1 Pelion or Pelium (Modern Greek: Πήλιο, Pílio; Ancient Greek/Katharevousa: Πήλιον. Pēlion) is a mountain at the southeastern part of Thessaly in central Greece, forming a hook-like peninsula between the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. Its highest summit, Pourianos Stavros, is 1,610 m amsl.

The first woman, Hebe, was born in Alexandria, Egypt in an upper class environment while the second, Helen, was born in a remote villages of Thessaly’s, Agrafa.

The second work, titled “Municipal Embroidery Workshop” focuses on the psychological and social dimensions of the tradition of fabric embellish-ment.

The third project titled Folding screens (Enlarge and Rotate // Greek Folk Ornaments) focuses on the shape and the color patterns of the textiles that are to be found on the second floor of the Museum of Folk Art and History of Pelion.

The latest project, titled “Arte.facts” consists of a se-ries of small interventions. During his visits to the Museum A. Ntelakos decided to tackle the space as a text on which could highlight with yellow color

the objects of interest for further study. The result is a series of colored ceramic and wooden objects that start a dialogue with the museum’s artefacts.
