This resource is used by the church starting on the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee and it’s last use is on Holy Saturday Morning. This liturgical book is called the Triodion because in the Orthros service of the Great Lent, instead of the normal nine odes that are chant- ed, only three odes are sung. This service book of the Great Lent guides the themes of each Sunday and the divine services that are particular the season of the Great Lent. The themes of each Sunday starting with the beginning of the Triodion are: 1) The Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee 2) The Sun- day of the Prodigal Son 3) The Sunday of the Last Judgement (also known as Meat-Fare Sunday) 4) The Sunday of For- giveness (Also known as Cheese-Fare Sunday) 5) The first Sunday of the actual start of the Great Lent is titled the “Sunday of Orthodoxy” 6) the second Sunday of the Great Lent is the Sunday of St. Gregory Palams 7) The third Sun- day is the dedicated to the Veneration of the Holy Cross 8) The fourth Sunday is dedicated to St. John of the Ladder of Divine Ascent 9) The fifth Sunday is that of St. Mary of Egypt. 10) The sixth Sunday is of course Palm Sunday. Along with the hymns that are used for the Orthros and Vespers of Great Lent, there are special services that take place only during the Great Lent that of the Pre-Sanctified Divine Liturgy and that of the Great-Compline. As most Orthodox Christians are aware, also on the first five Fridays of the Great Lent there is a special service dedicated to the Mother of God called the Service of the Salutations. Another characteristic of the Great Lent are the scriptural readings. Throughout the week, the Triodion points the worshipper to the reading of three books from the Old Testament; The Book of Genesis; The Book of Proverbs and the Readings from the Prophetic Book of Isiah. Upon the start of Holy Week, this blessed book of the Great Lent leads the congregation in the prayers, hymns and scriptural reading throughout all of Holy Week through Good Friday. As a Christian does the spiritual work of the Triodion, it leaves one to a tomb, the tomb of Christ. This is where the Triodion ends. How very disheartening. It is faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ that transforms the work of a Christian to a blissful joy. This will be the for next weeks bulletin, when the Pentecostarion is presented.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians 2:16-20 Brethren, knowing that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. The Gospel According to Luke 10:25-37 At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eter-nal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? How do you read?" And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have answered right; do this, and you will live." But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him; and what-ever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed mercy on him." And Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

  • ΤΙ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΤΟ ΤΡΙΩΔΙΟ,ΓΙΑΤΙ ΟΝΟΜΑΖΕΤΑΙ ΕΤΣΙ, ΠΟΤΕ ΞΕΚΙΝΑ ΚΑΙ ΠΟΤΕ ΟΛΟΚΛΗΡΩΝΕΤΑΙ;
