Sunday of Orthodoxy Restoration of Icons and Prayer of St Ephraim

This Sunday, the first Sunday of the Great Fast, we cele-brate the Triumph of Orthodox. It is a full celebration of all that the Orthodox Church proclaims as truth, mainly derived from the Scrip-

tures and the Ecumenical Councils. The 7th Ecumenical Council which took place in Nicaea in 787, affirmed our belief that Icons are an essential part of our faith and they in no way constitute idolatry. As St Basil says we venerate icons not to respect the wood or paint-ing, but to pass our reverence on to the prototype depicted. After all, our Lord took on flesh and bone, in that way sanctifying matter and making it worthy of reverence. We engage our senses with visuals,

scents of incense, and sing hymns for our ears. In this same way, we hold our bodies and all God-created matter as sacred and not disposa-ble. This is why we worship with our bodies and not only our minds with examples like making our cross, doing metanoias, bowing with

the priest blesses or censes us, and kissing icons or the clergy’s right hand. Likewise, during Lent we have the Prayer of St Ephraim which is included below. As we pray this prayer, especially during Lent, we make three large prostrations; one following each verse. If you cannot, we at

least do a half prostration (metanoia) so that we can involve our body in our prayer. Η ευχή του Αγίου Εφραίμ του Σύρου

Η Ανάμεσα σ’ όλες τις προσευχές και τους ύμνους τις Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής μπορεί να ονομαστεί η προσευχή της Μεγάλης Τεσσαρακοστής. Η Παράδοση την αποδίδει σε έναν από

τους μεγάλους δασκάλους της πνευματικής ζωής, τον Άγιο Εφραίμ το Σύρο. Γιατί αυτή η σύντομη και απλή προσευχή κατέχει μια τόσο σημαντική θέση στην όλη λατρεία της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής; Διότι απαριθμεί, μ’ ένα μοναδικό τρόπο, όλα τα αρνητικά και τα θετικά στοιχεία

της μετάνοιας και αποτελεί, θα λέγαμε, ένα «κανόνα ελέγχου» του προσωπικού μας αγώνα στην περίοδο της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής. Αυτός ο αγώνας σκοπεύει πρώτα απ’ όλα στην

απελευθέρωσή μας από μερικές βασικές πνευματικές ασθένειες που διαμορφώνουν τη ζωή μας και μας κάνουν πραγματικά ανίσχυρους ακόμα και για να κάνουμε αρχή στροφής στο Θεό.

O Lord and Master of my life, take from me a

spirit of sloth, despondency, love of power, and

idle talk.

But give rather a spirit of chastity, humility, pa-

tience, and love to your servant.

Yes, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own

faults and not to judge my brother, for blessed

SYNAXARION Today, Sunday of Orthodoxy, we commemo-rate the restoration of the holy and venerable icons. We also commemorate our devout father Theophylact the confessor, bishop of Nicomedia, Hermes the Apostle, and devout Dometios.

Apolytikion Plagal First Mode

Eternal with the Father and the Spirit is the Word, Who of a virgin was begotten for our salvation. As the faithful we both praise and worship Him, for in the flesh did He consent to ascend unto the Cross, and death did He endure, and He raised unto life the dead through His all glorious resurrection.

Apolytikion of the Feast O Christ our God, begging forgiveness of our sins, we venerate Your Pure Image, O Good One. Of your own will you conde-scended to ascend upon the Cross in the flesh and deliver those You created from the bondage of the enemy. Wherefore, thankful-ly, we cry out, "When You came to save the world, Your filled all things with joy, O Our Savior."

Apolytikion of Great Martyr Catherine Let us praise the all-lauded and noble bride of Christ, * the godly Catherine, the guardi-an of Sinai and its defense, * who is also our support and succor and our help; * for with the Holy Spirit’s sword * she hath silenced brilliantly the clever among the godless; * and being crowned as a Martyr, she now doth ask great mercy for us all.

BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK - The weekend food program for children in

need in the greater Port Washington community. Once filled, the backpacks

will be delivered to the needy children at their schools, and they will carry

them home for the weekend. This outreach serves 57 local children who may

not otherwise have sufficient food when not at school. For the month of

March, we are grateful to the families of our GOYA that are shopping for

and filling the backpacks. Their participation is very much

This is the Faith of the Orthodox.

This is the Faith which has established the Universe.

Priest: Therefore, with brotherly love, we praise these

preachers of piety, for the glory and honor of their

own pious struggles for the Faith, and we say: Eternal

be the memory of the champions of Orthodoxy, pious

Emperors, most-holy Patriarchs, Hierarchs, Teachers,

Martyrs, and Confessors.

People: May their memory be eternal. (3)

Priest: Let us entreat God, that we may be instructed

and strengthened by the trials and struggles of these

Saints, which they endured for the faith, even unto

death, and by their teachings, entreating them that we

may imitate their godly life unto the end. May we be

deemed worthy of obtaining our requests through the

mercy and grace of the Great and First Archpriest,

Christ our God, through the intercessions of our glo-

rious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, of

the divine Angels, and of all the Saints.

People: Amen.

Priest: Who is so great a god as our God? You are

the God alone who works wonders. (3)

(Verse): You have revealed Your power among the

people.

(Verse): I remembered the deeds of the Lord.

ΙΕΡΕΥΣ: Οἱ Προφῆται ὡς εἶδον, οἱ Ἀπόστολοι

ὡς ἐδίδαξαν, ἡ Ἐκκλησία ὡς παρέλαβεν, οἱ

Διδάσκαλοι ὡς ἐδογµάτισαν, ἡ Οἰκουµένη ὡς

συµπεφώνηκεν, ἡ χάρις ὡς ἔλαµψεν, ἡ ἀλήθεια ὡς

ἀποδέδεικται, τὸ ψεῦδος ὡς ἀπελήλαται, ἡ σοφία

ὡς ἐπαῤῥησιάσατο, ὁ Χριστὸς ὡς ἑβράβευσεν,

Οὕτω φρονοῦµεν, οὕτω λαλοῦµεν, οὕτω

κηρύσσοµεν, Χριστόν τὸν ἀληθινὸν Θεὸν ἡµῶν

καὶ τοὺς Αὐτοῦ Ἁγίους ἐν λόγοις τιµῶντες, ἐν

συγγραφαῖς, ἐν νοήµασιν, ἐν θυσίαις, ἐν Ναοῖς, ἐν

Εἰκονίσµασι, Τὸν µὲν ὡς Θεὸν καὶ Δεσπότην

προσκυνοῦντες καὶ σέβοντες, τοὺς δὲ διὰ τὸν

κοινὸν Δεσπότην ὡς Αὐτοῦ γνησίους θεράποντας

τιµῶντες καὶ τὴν κατὰ σχέσιν προσκύνησιν

ἀπονέµονες. Αὕτη ἡ πίστις τῶν Ἀποστόλων, αὕτη

ἡ πίστις τῶν Πατέρων, αὕτη ἡ πίστις τῶν

Ὀρθοδόξων, αὕτη ἡ πίστις τὴν Οἰκουµένην

ἐστήριξεν. Ἐπὶ τούτοις τοὺς τῆς εὐσεβείας

Κήρυκας ἀδελφικῶς τε καὶ πατροποθήτως εἰς

δόξαν καὶ τιµὴν τῆς εὐσεβείας, ὑπὲρ ἧς

ἀγωνίσαντο, ἀνευφηµοῦµεν καὶ λέγοµεν· Τῶν τῆς

Ὀρθοδοξίας προµάχων εὐσεβῶν Βασιλέων,

ἁγιωτάτων Πατριαρχῶν, Ἀρχιερέων, Διδασκάλων,

Μαρτύρων, Ὁµολογητῶν, Αἰωνία ἡ µνήµη.

ΧΟΡΟΣ: Αἰωνία ἡ µνήµη, αἰωνία ἡ µνήµη,

αἰωνία αὐτῶν ἡ µνήµη.

ΙΕΡΕΥΣ: Τούτων τοῖς ὑπὲρ εὐσεβείας µέχρι

θανάτου ἄθλοις τε καὶ ἀγωνίσµασι καὶ

διδασκαλίαις παιδαγωγεῖσθαί τε καὶ κρατύνεσθαι

Θεὸν ἐκλιπαροῦντες, καὶ µιµητός τῆς ἐνθέου

αὐτῶν πολιτείας µέχρι τέλους ἀναδεικνύσθαι

ἐκδυσωποῦντες, ἀξιωθείηµεν τῶν ἐξαιτουµένων,

οἰκτιρµοῖς καὶ χάριτι τοῦ Μεγάλου καὶ Πρώτου

Ἀρχιερέως Χριστοῦ τοῦ ἀληθινοῦ Θεοῦ ἡµῶν,

πρεσβείαις τῆς ὑπερενδόξου Δεσποίνης ἡµῶν

Θεοτόκου καὶ ἀειπαρθένου Μαρίας, τῶν θεοειδῶν

Ἀγγέλων καὶ πάντων τῶν Ἁγίων.

ΧΟΡΟΣ: Ἀµήν.

Τίς Θεὸς µέγας, ὡς ὁ Θεὸς ἡµῶν; σὺ εἶ ὁ Θεός, ὁ

ποιῶν θαυµάσια µόνος. (3)

Στίχ. Ἐγνώρισας ἐν τοῖς λαοῖς τὴν δύναµίν σου.

Στίχ. Ἐµνήσθην τῶν ἔργων Κυρίου, ὅτι

µνησθήσοµαι ἀπὸ τῆς ἀρχῆς τῶν θαυµασίων σου.
