Impossibile videtur menti hominis quomodo ipsa tam magna hedificia construi potuerunt. De primo altari.- Dicta ecclesia habet duas naves, unam post aliam, in qua navi prima est primum altare factum in mundo per sanctum Dyonisium post adhectam sanctam catholicam fidem.

I was most pleased to observe that on the top of the citys citadel there is a huge, wondrous temple of the goddess Pallas, the noble work of Phidias. It is tall, with fifty-eight columns seven feet in diameter, is decorated everywhere with handsome statues on both facades, on the topmost band of the walls, and outside on the architraves, where a battle of centaurs in seen, marvelous products of the sculptors art.

But my special preference was to revisit on that very same celebrated citadel the handsome temple of the divine Pallas. I wanted to examine it more carefully from every angle/ built of solid, polished marble, it is the admirable marble, it is the admirable work of Phidias, as we know from the testimony of Aristotles words to King Alexander as well as from our own Pliny and a host of other notable authors. This extraordinary, marvelous temple, has survived to our own day. It is raised up on fifty-eight columns: twelve at each of its two fronts, [i.e.,] two rows of six in the middle [between the two outer colonnades] and, outside the walls [of the cella], seventeen along each side/ each column has a diameter of five feet. There are ambulatories eight feet wide between the lateral columns and the splendid [cella] walls on either side. The columns support entablatures nine and one-half feet long and four feet high. On them the battle between the centaurs and the Lapiths, which took place in Thessaly, is sculptured with marvelous skill. On the topmost friezes of the [four] walls, two cubits distance below the very top [of the walls], the artist has fashioned with supreme excellence [representations of] the Athenian victories in Pericles time. They are about as tall as a ten-year-old boy. On the two facades, over the whole portion measured by the cover [i.e, the pediments], one sees high up, large indeed colossal statues of men and gorses, a beautiful adornment for this prodigious place of worship. I have taken pains to include a sketch of this splendid building, as far as in me lay, in the journal which I am keeping about my current trip through Greece.
