Upavasathaday ,thatis,thedayprecedingthemainritualoftheAgny 瓦dheya.

Generaloutlineoftheritualisasfollows.Fireistakenfromthehouseofsomeoutsiderandiskeptontheplace

wherelatertheAnv 瓦harya fireistobeestablished.Alltheparticipantstake

seattowardssouthofthefire.Placeofdice-playispreparedsouthwardsofthefire. Aholeisdugtowardssouth. Andthespiritsofthesacrificer's

fathersareinvitedthere.Then , washing-water , seatうdrink aregiventothem

justasincasesoftreatingimportantguests.

Acowispreparedtooffer.Thesacrificerandhissonssittogetherandplaydiceforacow.3 Thecowiskilled.Itsinternalorgansarecookedand

offeredtothesacrificer うs fathers. Afterpayinghomage , hepresentsthem

eye-paste , body喧paste andcloth.Heshowsthemoff.Then うhe callshisown

mind(mα nas) backtohimself. HechangeshisclothandgivesaBahm叫a

theoldone.HedistributesmeatofcowtotheBahmanas.

ThisritualofGopitfyajiiaisnotreferredtointhebriihma 'f} α portion oftheTaittirlyasrutitexts ,andtheyoungersiltrasoftheYajurvedadonotgive

itinthedescriptionofthepreliminaryritualsof.theAgny 瓦dheya. Instead う

theyoungersiltrasprescribethedice-gameandthe0狂ering offood(inthis

case , nottotheancestors うbut tothebrahma 早as onthescene)towardsthe

Theancestorritualwithofferingofcow 冶meat makesusremindtheA科aka ritualwhichisananothertypeofancestorritualoftheGrhyatype.TheAりak 瓦is performedduringthethreelastmonthsoftheyear.OneofthesethreeA科akas usesthecow-meatasitsofferingmaterial.ThisisespeｭciallycalledEka 科ak 瓦and istoberegardedasrepresentingalltheA科akas. 7

reasonforitliesinthefactthattheriteitselfisnotassignedanyplaceinthepresenttextoftheAgnyadheyaoftheVadhillaSrautasiltra.Inorderto

confirmthispoint , Ishallmakeacursorysurveyupontheplaceoftherite

oftheGopitryajiiaintheritualschemeoftheVadhillaschoolgivenintheMSS.wherethispeculiarritualisfound.

TheMadrasMS.(M)isaDevanagarIcopyoftheMalayalamMS , K1,madeinMadrasduringtheperiodof1922-23whenthelatteronewasborｭrowedfromtheowner , asthecolophonofM recordsthattheoriginalcopybelongedto"KandangasseriMana ぅIrinjalakuda ， Cochin(sic.)". ItisthisMadrasMS.thathadbeenutilizedbyVedicresearcherssinceW.CalandastheonlyavailableMS.ofthebasictextsoftheVadhillaschool.

belongingtotheVadhillaschool.AstheritehassofarbeenknownonlyintheBaudhayanaSrautasiltraandtheBaudhayanatexthasbeentheonlysourceofinformationofthisriteintheentireextantVedicliterature ,anewmaterialofthisriteisnowaddedfromthenewlyfoundmanuscriptsoftheV瓦dhilla

Accordingtothisstatement ,theGopitryajnaistobeperformedontheUpavasathadayofthesri αutα ritual oftheAgnyadhey 九just asisthecaseoftheGopitryajnainthetraditionoftheBaudh 瓦yana school.However , thetransmittedtextoftheVadhula うs Agnyadheyadoesnotincorporate , initspresenttext ヲthe Gopitryajnarite.
