Cux87–Jean-PhilippeDalGobbo The Cux 87 is a typical Germanshrimp trawler from the DeutscheKrabbenkutterWerft. This type of trawlerisoftenseen inthesmallharborsalongtheNorth German coast. Cuxhaven is anindependenttownandseatoftheCuxhavendistrict, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It issituatedontheshoreoftheNorthSeaatthemouthoftheElbeRiver.Cuxhavenishometoanimportantfisherman’swharfandshipregistration point for Hamburg. Thesetrawlers are about 20 meters long, driven

bytwo200hpdieselenginesandhaveacrewofthree. ThemodelisbeingbuiltfromaBillingskitin1:33scale.Theowner’sfatherstartedthisparticularmodelin1952.Jean-Philippeisfinishingthemodelforhim.Whenreceivedthehullwasfallingapartandtherewasaholeinthedeck.Thesideswererepaired,aswasthe deck hole. Drywall Spackle was used prior to painting. All the brass pieces weremissingandthesewerereplacebyClairHessatAgesofSailwithawholenewkit!Thedeckfurnishingsarenearcompletionandthenethandlingwinchisdone.Themastsaresteppedandthenavigationlightingfixturesappeartobeallinplace.Jean-Philippethinksthattheremaybeenoughpartsleftovertobuildanotherboat.

TombRaiderII“VeniceMotorBoat”–BobPenikas Bobbroughtinamodelofthe“VeniceMotorBoat”. Bobwrites:Thekitwasafreedownloadathttps://ninjatoes.wordpress.com/category/tomb-raider/page/2/. Themodelpartswereprintedon57lb.WausauExactVellumBristol.PriortocutoutandbuildthetwopartspagesweregivenaprotectivecoatingofshakycanKrylonacrylicgloss. Lara Craft Tomb Raider (also known as simply Tomb Raider) is a 2001 action-adventurebasedontheTombRaidervideogameseriesfeaturingthecharacterLaraCroftportrayed by Angeline Jolie. Since constructionwith paper iswigglier, I had thoughts ofusingwoodbut,asIworkedonotherhobbytablestuff,morepaperpartskeptbeingadded

to this fictitiousmotorboat. Thepaddedseatswere built up using shop towel pieces andTesters glass enamel. Final boat build wasgiven several spray coats of Krylon Acrylicgloss. For thosewhomaybeunfamiliarwiththecharacter, IbroughtalongLaraCroft. TheLara Croft Tomb Raider model by Ninjatoes:https://ninjatoes.cordpress.com/. She was afree download with photo build instructions.The parts were printed on 90 lb. Exact Indexwhichprovedtoworkquirewellexceptforherhairwhichwastoostiffso20lb.paperhairwassubstituted. Loadweightswereaddedtotheinsideofbothbootsduringbuild.Enhancedherboobs…uh…ratherparts#43and#45.Shestands11inchestallfromfloortothetopofherhead,thenaddanothertwoinchestothetopforhershotgun.Noticethedetailthatmaybeobtainedusingpaper. During the build, one of Lara’s grenades fired off tweezers tips and disappearednoiselesswithinthegarageclutter. Iwasbentdownsearchingamongtheboxeswhenmywifesteppedinandasked,“WhatwasIlookingfor?”Ireplied: “Idroppedagren……ah…….paperpart.”

RiggingClips–LarryVanEs Larrybrought insomeelectronicstestclipshehas foundusefulwhileriggingshipmodels. Pressing the end button exposes the hook portion. Thesewill hold a line quitesecurely and you can add some weight where needed. He bought his at Orvac onOrangethorp. They are also available atMarvak, Pomona Electronics and Amazon. ThisimagefromaGogglesearchshowsthattherearemanysizes,shapesandendconfigurationstochoosefrom.

LaReal–DonDressel

Real (galley)wasbuilt inBarcelona,Spain at the Royal Shipyard and was thelargest galley of its time. A replica of thisgalleyisintheBarcelonaMaritimeMuseum,whichDonwasabletovisitafewyearsago.Thegalleywas200 ft. longand20 ft.wide,had two masts, and weighted 237 tonsempty. Shewasequippedwiththreeheavyand six light artillery pieces,was propelledby a total of 290 rowers and, in addition,carried about 400 sailors and soldiers atLepanto.50menwerepostedontheupperdeckof the forecastle, 50on the amidships

ramp,another50eachalongthesidesatthebow,50eachontheskiffandovenplatforms,50 on the firing steps along the sides near the stern and 50more on the stern platformbehindthehugebattleflag.Tohelpmoveandmaneuverthehugeship,itwaspushedfromtherearduringthebattlebytwoothergalleys. The Battle of Lepanto in 1571 saw Juan of Austria’s fleet of the Holy League, asallianceofChristianpowersoftheMediterranean;decisivelydefeatanOttomanfleetunderGrandAdmiralMüezzomzadeAliPasha. RealandtheTurkishgalleySultana,flagshipofAliPasha,engagedindirectdeck-to-deckcombatverysoonafter thestartof thebattle. Sultanawasboardedandafteraboutonehourofbloodyfighting,withreinforcementsbeingsuppliedtobothshipsbysupportinggalleysofthetworespectivefleets,wascaptured. AliPashawaswoundedbymusketfire,felltothedeck,andwasbeheadedbyaSpanishsoldier.Hisheadwasdisplayedonapike,severelyaffectingthemoralofhistroops.Realcapturedthe“GreatFlagoftheCaliphs”andbecameasymbolofthevictoryatLepanto.(Wikipedia) DonbroughtinhisbeginningeffortsontheDusakkitmodelin1/72scaleoftheRealto show his slow progress on the first planking of the hull. No particular pattern wasfollowedwheninstallingthefirstlayerofplanking–thiswillbedonewiththesecondlayerofplanking. Donalsoshowedhismethodof soaking thewoodenstrips inDowneywatersoftener insideaplasticPVC tube, sealedatoneendand cappedat theother, to assist insofteningthewoodstripstobendtotheshapeoftheframes.Donalsowantedtoshowtheinstallation of thewood strips from the keel up and the deck down,meeting at themid-sectionofthehull,asthisistheeasiestplankto“merge”tocompletetheplanking.Lotsofsandingwillnowberequiredbeforethesecondlayerofplanksisinstalled.

ClipperSchoonerSmuggler1877–JimIngersoll Daniel Poland, Jr. and Charles C.Woodbury at Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1887builtSmugglerforGloucesterinterests.Shewasbuiltforthemackerelpurse-seinefishery.Hertonnageof67.92gross,64.52netwasprobablyaboutaverageforavesselintheseiningfleet.(EricA.R.Ronnberg,Jr.). JimismakinggoodprogressonhismodelofthemackerelschoonerSmuggler,beingbuiltfromaBluejacketkitin1:48scale.Thehullisplankedoversolidandhehasworkedtomakethehullplankingmorepronouncedcomparedwiththepartiallycompletedhullasreceived. Deck planking is on and painted, as are the built-up areas around the mast

partners and windlass. The headworkappears complete and painted includingthe trail boards, head rails, catheads,hawse-pipesandthebowsprit.Theseineroller is in place and Jim is puzzling outsome of the rigging point attachments.The chain plates have been a particularproblem as the prototype calls for themtobeinstalledthroughtherailingandletinto the back of the timberheads. Thishas been difficult to accomplish at thisscale.Jimisdoingagreatjobsofaronhisefforts to build the Smuggler and it ishoped that more progress will be

completedbythenextSMAmeeting.

CatalanShip“Nao”–BillSchultheis Bill is proceedingonhisNao of ca.1450 in 1:30 scale. The model is beingbuilt from a Woody Joe kit. He is nowfinishedwiththeplankingwhichisreallyastrip wood veneer being applied over theinitial layer of planking. Due to theroundness of thehull thiswas challengingintheendsoftheship.Thetechniquethatworked thebestwas tocoatbothsurfaceswith Tightbond (wood glue), let them dryand thenuse ahot iron tobond the stripsdowntothehull.Muchoftheupperdecksarefinished.Hatchesandhatchcoversareinstalled.Themastisstepped,asisthebowspritandboomkinaft.Thequarterdeckrailingis on and the poop deck is raised into place, accessible by a ladder. A ladder also givesaccessfromthemaindecktothequarterdeck.Acrow’snesthasbeeninstalledonthemast.

USSCairo&USSVesuvius–DavidT.OkamuraDavidshowedacoupleofpapermodelkits fromtheRussiancompanyOral. OnewastheironcladUSSCairo and theother thegunboatUSSVesuvius. Bothare in1:200scale. Thecompanyalsooffers“Lasercutting”andphotoetchpartsfortheVesuvius.Althoughitisnotcleartothisreporterwhatexactlyisbeinglasercut,isitaccuratelycutcardstockorperhapswood? USSCairowasoneofthefirstAmericanironcladwarshipsbuiltatthebeginningoftheU.S.CivilWar. CairowastheleadshipoftheCity-classgunboatsandnamedforCairo,Illinois. In June 1862, she captured the Confederate garrison of Fort Pillow on theMississippi,enablingUnionforcestooccupyMemphis.AspartofheYazooPassExpedition,shewas sunkon12December1862,while clearingmines for the attackonHainesBluff.Cairowasthefirstshipevertobesunkbyamineremotelydetonatedbyhand.Theremains

ofCairocanbeviewedatVicksburgNationalMilitaryParkwithamuseumof itsweaponsandnavalstores. WilliamCrampandSonsShipsandEngineBuildingCompany, subcontracted fromthe Pneumatic Dynamite Gun Company of New York City, laid down USS Vesuvius inSeptember1887 at Philadelphia. Vesuvius carried three 15-inch cast ironpneumatic guns, inventedbyD.M.MedfordanddevelopedbyEdmundZalinski, a retiredofficer of the United States Army. They were mounted forward side-by-side at a fixedelevationof16degrees.Gunbarrelswere55feetlongwiththemuzzlesextending15feetthroughthedeck37feetabaftthebow.Inordertotraintheseweapons,theshiphadtobeaimed, like a gun, at its target. Compressed air from a 1000-psi reservoir projected theshellsfromthedynamiteguns. The shells fired from the guns were steel or brass casings 7 feet long with theexplosivecontainedintheconical forwardpartofthecasingandspiralvanesontheafterpart to rotate the projectile. JohnBakkerstartedoffthemeetingtalkingabouthiseffortstobuildtheoldkitmodel of theWappen vonHamburg,whichused to be a Movo kit. Corel brought outtheMovokitandthereseemstobealotofproblems with the transition, as the plansandtheinstructionbookletthatcomeswiththe kit do not match. John mentioned aminor problem that we all have whileconstructingthemodel.Apparently,alotofthe belaying pins disappeared down thehatchoftheupperdeck,whichprovedtobea big problem. If something is dropped

(smallitem)itinevitablydisappearsnevertobefoundagain!Thepedestalsfortherailingsapparentlyhavetobeturnedoutofsquarestock–nonewerefoundinthekit. Despiteallthesetbacks,themodelisstartingtocometogetherandlooksgreat(seephoto). Johndidbring themodel into theMaySMAmeetingbutdidnot talkabout it, soattendanceat theMayflowerGroupmeetingisevenmorerewardingforshipmodelbuilders. DaveOkamurabroughtinacardstockmodeloftheBadgerprintedbyShipyard,thatis available fromShips in Scale over the Internet. It is a fully rigged shipmodel in 1/96scale. There was one of these cardstock ship models at one of the SMA Queen MaryConferences a few years ago, whichwas very impressive. Dave also showed us anothercardstockmodeloftheCairo,againin1/96scale–aCivilWarironclad. DonLeymandiscussedhisprogressonhis superbmodel of theHMSPegasus, a SwanClass sloop of the Royal Navy. The lowerforemast, mainmast and mizzen is completenowwithallshroudsinstalled.Thenextstepistoinstalltheratlines,whichDonhasindicatedhewill dowith a paper backing to insure theratlines are correctly spaced (see photo). Healsotalkedaboutsomeoftheprogressinotherareasoftheshipandindicatedhenowplanstofully rig the model, even though it will berather largewhencompleted. Hehascometothe same conclusion that your editor hasarrived at – a fully rigged shipmodel ismuchbetterthanjustthehull.

Donwas next upto talk about hisprogress (very slow) onthe Le Real. Don is stillinstalling the first layerofplankingonthemodel,which is different fromall other ship modelplank-on-bulkhead kitsDonhasbuiltinthepast.The stem, keel andsternpost are installedAFTER both layers ofplanking are installed.Don is installingthe firstlayer of strakes with noparticular regard toposition, as he does not

want to have any problem with the second layer of planking, which will be installedproperlywith the correctnumberof planks inproper lengthusingproportional dividers.The progress is slow, since Don first soaks the wooden strakes in a solution of Downeywatersoftenerandwater,thenclampsthemtothemodeltodrybeforegluingthemon–allofwhichtakes time. TheDowneywatersoftener ismuchnicer touse thanammoniaandsmells very nice when you are working with it. Once the first layer of planks is finallycompleted,alotofsandingandformingwilltakeplacebeforethesecondlayerofplanksareinstalled. Once again, the instructions make this sound very easy – install first layer ofplanking! Unfortunately, the only other option open to shipmodel buildings is to eithermakeall the framesandsingleplankorstartwithasolidhulland form it toshape.Stevementionedthathestilldoesnotbelievethesternwiththebulgescanbeplankedwiththesecond layer of planking – Don indicated it will be a challenge but there is still a lot ofsandingtobedoneoncethefirstlayerofplanksareinstalledandthe“bumps”onthesternmaynotbesoprominentoncethesandingiscompleted.Thephotoaboveshowsthedeckfirstlayerofplanking.The“strings”inthephotoareattachedtothemodelfrombelowthedecksandhavetobe installedpriortoplanking,as installationafterthemodel isplankedwould not be possible as there would be no access to be able to do so..

are indicated here, as the show was a judgedaffair. TheSanDiegoFairisopenfromJune1stto July 4th, located at theDelMar Fairgrounds,2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar, Ca. YouwouldwanttogototheDesigninWoodareatosee the wooden exhibition including thewoodenshipmodels. The results of the ship model judgingareasfollows: Honorable mention award goes toRobertHewitt forhisminiatureVikingShipaspictured to the left. WhileDave and Iwere atthe judging show there were a number of

peoplewhowereadmiringRobertsmodelandmarveling at the very fine miniature workexhibitedinthecase.ItwasalsogreatthattheFineWoodworkers Association put themodelintoaglasscase toprotect itandkeep it from“walkingaway”. FourthplacewenttoIsaacWillsforhisTopsail Schooner pictured here. Again, themodelwasinacasetoprotectitaswellasgivethemodelagoodpresentation.Theshowalsodid a great jobwith the card display showingthemodeler,shipsname,scale,etc.TheNFSonthe name placard indicates that the model isnotforsale.Ifitwasforsale,apricewouldbeindicated. ThirdplacewenttoJonSanfordforhisEnglish Longboat, again very nicely displayedin the casewithaniceplacard. Thismodel ispicturedbelowthetopsailschoonertotheleft.Both of these models were in the same casedisplayednexttoeachother. SecondplacewenttoDaveYotterwithhis beautiful model of Bluenose. Since Davealreadyhadhismodelinagreatcase,theshowdidnothavetoputhisinacase.First,itistoolargetofitintheirregularcasesandsecond,itwasputondisplaynext to theSanDiegoShipModelers booth, which you can see in thephotograph. Since thiswas the judging awardceremony and the fair was not yet open, theboothwasnotmannedyet. FirstplacewenttoDonDresselforhismodel of the Halifax. Once again, the modelwithitscasewasplacedinsideanothercaseforprotection.Youcanseeinthisphototheotherfinewoodworking itemsthatareondisplayattheshow,asallpicturesweretakenatthefair. There are MANY other things to seeand enjoy at the SanDiego Fair if youplan toattend.Asanaddednote,thereareacoupleofSMAmemberswhohaveenteredmodelsattheSanDiegoFairinthepastandwonawards,twoof them being Dr. Henry Bikhazi and ClydeEmerson. The show is well worth a trip forthose interested, as there are many otherthingstoseeandenjoyalso.
