Dear Alumni, Actives, Family and Friends,

It is my honor to share with you a few insights about this year’s inductees into the ΣAE Hall of Fame. These men are heros, not only to our sacred chapter, but within their communities as well.

Without BIll Buck, the ΣAE chapter house at 835 Evans Avenue wouldn’t have opened its doors in 1953. Bill solicited a large donation from THPO Joe McDonald to make this possible. Some 56 years later, it was Bill Buck who donated and loaned Nevada Alpha the funds for a major re-model in 2009, including a new pitched roof and earthquake resistant shear walls. Since the death of brother Jerry Wyness, Bill has picked up the gonfalon to encourage the surviving members of “Showtime”to con-tinue to support our beloved chapter house.

As a student at Nevada, BOB cOrkErN was the business manager of the Sagebrush, a member of the Inter- Fraternal council, Sundowners, and E.A. in 1966. Bob credits ΣAE with giving him the leadership skills he called upon as a captain in the u.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Bob corkern has been extremely generous to Nevada Alpha over the years to honor his cherished memories and the lifelong friendships he made. Bob lives in Stockton, california, with his wife, Jill. They have four children and six grandchildren.

For more than 20 years, GrEG HIGGINS has been the man behind the scenes in all major electrical and plumbing improvements to Nevada Al-pha (through Western Nevada Supply co.). He served as NVAl House corporation President recently in one of our most challenging times, and is presently School Board President Elect of Our lady of the Snows catholic church.

Yours in the Bonds,Denver Dickerson

WILLIAM E. BUCKBill grew up in Boulder city and was the only kid from his home town to enroll at the university of Nevada in 1945. He graduated in 1949 with a B.S. in Business Administration and a minor in Music. (Two of his songs, “Hello On The Hill” and “Wolfpack, Give ‘Em Hell” were adopted by the college.)

Buck organized a small jazz band that played for many college functions. One of the most notable remembrances was when he had his band lead a parade through the campus to rally votes for the ΣAE candidate running for Student Body President. What made the situation unique was that he was riding up on top of an elephant playing his trumpet with the band walking along on both sides of the huge animal. A large sign read: ‘TEN TONS OF VOTES FOr ΣAE’.

He, and 14 other ΣAE grads formed a group they called, “Showtime”. Every two years they met somewhere in the world where they “raised the roof” and had a really good time for three or four days. Their last meeting was in reno in 2009.

Following graduation, he married his college sweetheart, Eleanor. They have three children (two girls and a boy). Bill and Ellie are world travelers.

Bill has had a very successful real estate business for some 60 years, with developments in reno- Sparks, carson city, las Vegas and Winnemucca, in Nevada; and other ventures in the states of Oregon, california, Arizona and Texas.

GREG HIGGINSGreg was initiated into the Nevada Alpha chapter in the fall of 1977. He was given the Outstanding Pledge Award that semester. He lived in the house at 835 Evans all four years as an undergraduate, and was heavily involved in all of the activities that the fraternity participated in. He was also a member of Sundowners. In 1982, Greg graduated with a Bachelorof Science degree. He went to work in sales at Western Nevada Supply company shortly after graduation and have been there ever since. He was married in 1985 to his wife Jeannine. They have five children (four boys and a girl).

All of the close friendships he has today were all gained during the years at the Fraternity. Over the years he has been, and still is involved, in many charitable organizations. When asked about ΣAE he said, “One of the main things the Fraternity taught me was humility and a sense that you have to give what you can of yourself to help others. I never forgot what the Fraternity meant to me and have always tried to give back what I could over the years. I am proud and will always be proud to be called an ΣAE.”
