ΔX of ΔKE Special Study #24: Spring Weekend 1966, ΔKE House Party Photograph
A photograph of the Delta Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon at Cornell University House
Party held during Spring Weekend, May 1966, is recorded with identifications of the
participants. The photograph was furnished by ΔKE Brother Robert Hilton Lester ‘69.
A recording of the Dixieland Jazz music played by the Muskrat Ramblers ensemble at a similar
House Party held in 1967 has also been preserved. Cf. p. 28 for accession data.
Contact data for those brothers who helped with the identifications has been relocated to ΔX of
ΔKE Research Note #49: Contact Data for Deke History Program. This Research Note will
not be published.

Message Log, 14 April 16 September 2003
Robert Hilton Lester ‘69 e-mail, Sun 4/14/2013 6:09 PM
I remember Bob Grawi and I am pretty sure he was in our pledge class (class of 69). He is
pictured in the official Duke [sic] photo of Spring Weekend May 1966 and in in the official
picture of the Duke brotherhood 1966. I have copies of these if you would like me to email them
to you. And, by the way, Greg Furness was not the only musical talent back then. I was a pretty
fair guitar player myself, and Bruce Hancock (Wiley) could really belt out his rendition of “Oh
Holy Night”. As a matter of fact, Greg was the one who talked me into buying a guitar from
Gary McMillan. I think I threw in my old guitar as part of the deal. Does anyone know what
happened to these two guys?
Robert Hilton Lester ‘69 e-mail, Tue 4/16/2013 10:08 AM
Thanks for the contact info on Greg and Gary - I’ll give them a buzz. I noticed on the email I
sent you about Bob Grawi that when I referred official Duke photos, I, of course, meant Deke
photos. You know I am from Tarheel country.
Robert Hilton Lester ‘69 e-mail, Tue 4/16/2013 3:59 PM
Enclosed is a poor quality copy of the spring weekend photo. Bob Grawi is in the center in the
plaid coat displaying his middle finger. He obviously didn’t have a date. If you send me your
contact information, I will send you high resolution copies of this and the 1966 chapter member
picture next week.
David Roger Battaglini ‘68 e-mail, Thu 4/18/2013 4:57 PM
WOW!!!! On my right (as you look at the picture) is my father (Thomas Edward Battaglini
Cornell ‘46). On my left is my date Elizabeth (Betsy) Ranier Mullen, on her left is my mother
(Grace Marie Rivenburg). My parents were “chaperones” for that weekend. I don’t think I have
ever seen that picture. My parents had more fun than anyone that weekend. My father slipped
and fell somewhere that weekend (I think at another fraternity that we had a joint event with) and
had to seek medical attention at the emergency room. He later told everyone “I slipped on a bool
of peer”. Great memory. My parents are long past. THANK YOU RH LESTER!!!
David Roger Battaglini ‘68 e-mail, Thu 4/18/2013 5:32 PM
Unk10 is George Nesterczuk (sp?). [Incorrect]
David Roger Battaglini ‘68 e-mail, Thu 4/18/2013 5:36 PM
Unk2 in sunglasses is your beloved Pferd.
David Roger Battaglini ‘68 e-mail, Thu 4/18/2013 5:41 PM
Unk3 is Rudy Mateka (alumni pres). Unk5 kissing is Mike Hawkey (academic advisor).
David Roger Battaglini ‘68 e-mail, Thu 4/18/2013 5:53 PM
Not sure about Hawkey. The guy on the other side whose face is distorted by pillar looks like
him too. You know those Princeton graduates all look alike.

John Fernando Meyer ‘69 email, Thu 4/18/2013 7:29 PM
I think Unknown 1 was a Deke from Dartmouth that had DKE branded on his upper arm. The D
was somewhat illegible because it had gotten infected. I can’t remember his name. My date was
Judy Sinclair from Wells College. Rich Strassner’s date was his wife-to-be Pam Windsor.
David Roger Battaglini ‘68 e-mail, 4/18/2013 9:15 PM
Also. Why is everyone so dressed up in the middle of the day like that? I know we were dressier
back them but it looks like the middle if the day with the sunglasses and all.
John Fernando Meyer ‘69 email, Thu 4/18/2013 10:06 PM
[In response to HWF’s question, “But which figure is Strassner? And Pam?”] The kissing
couple.
John Fernando Meyer ‘69 email, Thu 4/18/2013 10:50 PM
More: In front of rearmost column on left is Mike Hawkey, our resident grad student (Cornell
Law , Princeton undergrad) that was responsible to the University for our behavior. In front of
second column from the back, on the left, in the dark glasses is Ross McGann. Next to Bob
Lester might be Greg Furness. As I said earlier, the kissing couple are definitely Rich and Pam.
Seated between Chuck Tang and Steve Syrjala is Eric Dodge and Peaches (Gettysburg College).
Between Dinehart and Forbes might be Tom Lee. Next to Bates’ date is Eric Dodge’s roommate,
whose name escapes me just now. Hope this helped.
John Fernando Meyer ‘69 email, Thu 4/18/2013 11:07 PM
More still. Second from right might be Ruard v. d. P. [Vanderploeg], but where is Beth
Greenslade? Conspicuously absent are Weadon and Mavis (probably at Alpha Delt) and Willis
T. King.
David Roger Battaglini ‘68 e-mail, Thu 4/18/2013 11:38 PM
I seem to remember that Lester’s date was originally Willis King’s date (an Elmira college
coed?) but Willis traded her to Lester for a tie he admired and the girl went along with the deal.
Although Lester was kind of a chick magnet and he probably just gave the tie as a courtesy to a
senior brother. (Definitely remember a girl for a tie trade but a bit fuzzy on the details.)
Thomas Edmund Lee ‘67 e-mail, Fri 4/19/2013 9:22 AM
Strasner is unk5 kissing his date. Hawkey is behind and to the right of Maghan. I can’t
understand where I was. John Hubbard may be able to identify the Pi Deke since his brother Bill
was a Pi Deke.

I appreciate the “chick magnet” comment. I’ll have to pass your email around the nursing home.
I don’t remember anything about a tie trade. My date was Pat Driscoll from Brooklyn. She was
the cousin of my roommate (Gerry Ellis) my freshman year. Dave is thinking about Sandy
Warfield, also a blond, from Elmira. She came later and she was a friend of Willis, but I don’t
think he dated her. I think Willis had set her up with a Deke brother from the Beta chapter at
Chapel Hill, which for some reason didn’t work out, and I ended up as the substitute. This may
have been for a “roof party”, which I found to be a very scary thing anyway. I remember that she
ran fearlessly around the roof top of the Deke House, which made my knees a little rubbery. In
the picture, Rich Strassner is right below Hal Uffelman, making out with, I guess, Pam.
Ross Warne Maghan, Jr. ‘66 e-mail, Fri 4/19/2013 10:57 AM
Spring Weekend 1966. Rear left unknown is Nels Carmen, Syracuse DKE in town for the
weekend.
Ross Warne Maghan, Jr. ‘66 e-mail, Fri 4/19/2013 10:59 AM
Also I am identifed correctly.
Prof. Richard Doane Bates, Jr. ‘66 e-mail, Fri 4/19/2013 11:11 AM
Yes - I am the one kneeling with glasses, dark tie and jacket. My hand is on the shoulder of my
date Louise Schmidt.
Thomas Edmund Lee ‘67 e-mail, Fri 4/19/2013 1:01 PM
Question mark on me and Bates is right. Gene Pearce sitting far left? Bill Wolf sitting to the right
(looking at picture) of Bates. Where was Ruard? I think Weadon was on the Glee Club trip to the
far East that term.
John Rast Hubbard ‘65 email, Fri 4/19/2013 12:10 PM
[In response to HWF’s question, “Could Nelson O. Carman” Pi Deke (Dartmouth ‘64) be
unk1?”] Yes.
John Rast Hubbard ‘65 email, Fri 4/19/2013 12:13 PM
[In response to HWF’s question, “John -- Are you in this picture?”] No, but I’m pretty sure I was
in town that day. unk1 = Nels Carman (Pi ‘64), unk7 = Eric “Rick” Kather, unk8 != Jong Wan
Rim (‘64) I don’t recall ever having seen him with a date. And that’s Richard “Dick” Bates, in
the dark coat and dark tie and glasses, kneeling behind his date on the left.
Prof. Richard Doane Bates, Jr. ‘66 e-mail, Fri 4/19/2013 12:15 PM
[In response to HWF’s question, “Who is unk14?”] Fairly sure it is Bill Wolf ‘66 - though he
looks much younger than I remember.
John Rast Hubbard ‘65 email, Fri 4/19/2013 12:17 PM
Unk14 looks like Pete McCarthy [‘66]. Was that before he went to Australia?
John Rast Hubbard ‘65 email, Fri 4/19/2013 12:20 PM
Kather is the one with the mustache, facing left, with closed eyes.
11
John Rast Hubbard ‘65 email, Fri 4/19/2013 12:26 PM
Unk10 is not George Nesterczuk. He is sitting on the rail, with only his legs and glasses visible.
That’s his first wife, Tania, the blond, standing next to him.
John Rast Hubbard ‘65 email, Fri 4/19/2013 12:45 PM
I think unk10 may be Nesterczuk’s brother. He was a CCNY Deke. That would be his date/wife
on his right.
(Dodge’s wife, “Peaches”, is named Patricia.)
Could unk12 be Willis King?
And I agree that unk11 could be Rurard or Stu Norwood. Was he still around then?
Tom Lee is right about unk14 being Wolfe, not McCarthy.
John Rast Hubbard ‘65 email, Fri 4/19/2013 1:05 PM
These were taken on the same weekend. (You can see they’re wearing the same clothes.)
1. Rudy Mateka, Nels Carman, George Nesterczuk, John Hubbard.
2. George Nesterczuk, Jessie Brownbeck, Ruard Vanderploeg.
12
3. John Hubbard, Rick Kather, Patricia “Peaches”, Eric Dodge.
4. Ross Maghan, date, Ellen Brown, John Hubbard, Rick Kather, date.
5. Date, Nels Carman, Rick Kather, Ellen Brown, Bruce Hancock, date

Lester mentioned a “roof party”. Here are some pix from Spring Weekend, 1964:
6. Ross Maghan, George Nesterczuk, Charles “Chuck” Graves
7. Everardo Goyanes, Bruce Hancock, Ross Maghan, John Hubbard, Bill Forbes, Robert Ian
“Bobby” Ferguson ‘67, date.
8. Adrian Goulet, John Hubbard, Chuck Graves, singing “When I Was a Freshman.”
(I think I may have sent you these before.) BTW, unk12 may be Adrien Goulet.

Willis Thomas King, Jr. ‘66 e-mail, Fri 4/19/2013 1:07 PM
Yes. Trade [of tie & date] was prompted in part when I wore a white staff jacket and was
bartender for Deke cocktail party. One other Elmira guest stayed behind and we became close
friends for many weekends.
Gregory Thomas Furness ‘69 e-mail, Fri 4/19/2013 1:17 PM
Bill- pretty sure that “Unknown # 9” is yours truly - afraid I can’t be any help with the others.
David Roger Battaglini ‘68 e-mail, Fri 4/19/2013 2:04 PM
Whew!!! Thought I was losing it. Of course I am, but didn’t need any more confirmation rushing
in. Next question: How does Lester not remember this? Guess it was just another day in his
“chick magnet” life.
David Roger Battaglini ‘68 e-mail Fri 4/19/2013 2:16 PM
Bill. Is it me or is it not amazing how matter of fact both Lester and Willis are about this event.
To me it’s like something you would have seen in “animal house” and I’ve never seen or heard
of something quite like it especially when the girl agrees to the transaction.
HWF e-mail to DRB, RHL & WTK, Fri 4/19/2013 3:07 PM
David: I must admit with rue and regret that Brothers Lester and King were far more skillful that
I was with the fair sex. My failure to snake Dughi’s date and my complete muff of another
opportunity are recorded in Research Notes #14 (p. 26), and #12, respectively. It is certainly the
masochist in me that keeps me working at DKE history. Your Betsy misery was matched by my
Ellie nightmare. Even the Viet Cong were disappointing in those days. Bill
John Rast Hubbard ‘65 email, Fri 4/19/2013 5:37 PM
You’re right about the names. The first five photos were 1965. (I didn’t know Ellen Brown in
1964.) But the last three, labeled “MAY 1964”, were indeed taken then.
Louis John Dughi, Jr. ‘69 e-mail, 4/20/2013 7:39 AM

Denise Arthur.

[Responding to HWF’s question, “Cornell coed?”] Trenton State.
Thomas Edmund Lee ‘67 e-mail, Sat 4/20/2013 8:30 AM
I zoomed in on the person I thought was Norwood. It isn’t and Nancy agrees. Maghan’s date was
named Sue Frankel, I think.
Robert Hilton Lester ‘69 e-mail, Sat 4/20/2013 10:30 AM
Bill I am not sure where you are on the IDs, but with regard to the comments below. I don’t
know 1 and 18. I don’t think Fred Vorhis [is] correct. Unk 4 is Tom Lee, Rich Strassner and Pam
are kissing, unk 6 is Mike Hawley, unk 9 is Greg Furness, RHL date is Pat Driscoll, Ross
Maghan is one with outstretched hand with watch and drink, unk 14 is Bill Wolf, unk 15 is Eric
Dodge. LJD date is “the Big D” (Denise). You probably know much of this already. Bob
15
Thomas Edmund Lee ‘67 e-mail, Sat 4/20/2013 11:09 AM
Looking closely it looks like John Hubbard not Pferd in the back row. I don’t see goulet
anywhere. There is also a face with glasses between Wiley head and his date’s.
John Fernando Meyer ‘69 email, Sat 4/20/2013 11:57 AM
The three unknowns might be the Muskrat Ramblers.
Warren Howard Bales, Jr. ‘68 e-mail, Sat 4/20/2013 1:59 PM
I think unk9 is Furness and unk10 is Vanderploeg, but they are both in your distribution, so they
can speak for themselves.
David Roger Battaglini ‘68 e-mail, Sat 4/20/2013 1:22 PM
[Responding to HWF’s question, “Was Rivenburg your mother’s maiden name?”] Yes. Got
carried away there. She was half English (Rider) half German (Rivenburg: Methodist NOT
Jewish). Somehow the maiden name seemed appropriate at a frat party when picture referred to
her as “date”. By the way if she were alive she would love you forever for referring to her in that
way. I guess this is obvious but I think if you put your ear up to the picture, you can hear the
muscrat [sic] ramblers playing “the saints go marching in” on the other side of the porch wall.
Was that on Sunday afternoon traditionally. I guess that explains the dress up. OK. Go ahead and
send me 30 pages on the muscrat ramblers and the Dixieland cocktail party tradition.
HWF e-mail to DRB, Sat 4/20/2013 1:22 PM
You should know better than to dare Fogle on a DKE subject. See attached [ΔX of ΔKE
Research Note #13: Muskrat Ramblers]. You do not know the story about Simpson and your
mother.
David Roger Battaglini ‘68 e-mail, Sat 4/20/2013 1:48 PM
Ok, what’s the Simpson story. It sounds vaguely familiar but I don’t recall. By the way didn’t
Simpson have a rather grotesque appetite for honey. I think I remember a party at Elders where
he found some in Elders cupboard and proceeded to drink it out of the jar while Elder chased
after him in hopes of retaining some for his toast in the morning. He was not successful.
Walt Koken (Muskrat Rambler) e-mail, Sat 4/20/2013 2:10 PM
I don’t really recognize any of them. There’s a possibility that the guy on the left is John
Prentiss, who was the banjo player before I was. I only met/saw him once or twice, and he might
have graduated in ‘65. Long time ago. Different set of brain cells.
Robert Hilton Lester ‘69 e-mail, Sat 4/20/2013 3:36 PM
I don’t know who unk 10, 11, or 12 is, and I am pretty sure Fred Vorhis is wrong. I will send you
a better copy on Monday.
Douglas Paul Cornelius ‘69, Sat 4/20/2013 6:49 PM
[Responding to HWF’s question, “Who is that behind your right shoulder?”] I think it is Eric
Kahler (sp?) prob ‘67. He set me up with his sister, with blond hair right next to us (her name
escapes me). Yes, I had a date!
16
Roy Rubenstein (Muskrat Rambler) e-mail, Sun 4/21/2013 3:46 PM
I don’t recognize any of them. Roy.
17
HWF e-mail to DRB, Sun 4/21/2013 7:53 AM
David: Since you asked… Simpson’s appetite for Elder’s honey was exceeded only by his vile
lust for your dear mother as he confessed to me on many occasions. I believe that this obsession
began on one of the DKE party weekends when your parents chaperoned. DJS was dateless as
usual and I think he spent some considerable time with the attractive Mrs. Battaglini while her
husband was distracted by our various entertainments. This “Mrs. Robinson” encounter (as he
remembers it) became one of the most formative incidents in the development of Simpson’s
persona (such as it is). Bill
HWF e-mail, Tue 4/23/2013 11:55 AM
Gentlemen: John Meyer suggested that the three unknowns (pictured below) might have been
Muskrat Ramblers. I contacted Walt Koken and Roy Rubenstein and sent them pictures. Walt
said that the only possibility was that the fellow in the far right might have been John Gilbert
Prentiss ‘66 (banjo, d. 2005), but that is doubtful. Please examine the two details and tell me if
you agree that unk12 is not Prentiss. Also, the Adrien Goulet ‘66 identification for unk12 is iffy
at best.
Ross Warne Maghan, Jr. ‘66 e-mail, Tue 4/23/2013 12:18 PM
UNK12 is not Adrian Goulet. UNK11 looks something like Mike Woodbury, Dartmouth DKE
who graduated with a B ARCH from Cornell. He was married and lived in university married
housing, but spent some time at the house.
Robert Hilton Lester ‘69 e-mail, Tue 4/23/2013 12:36 PM
Bill, I believe a Dixieland jazz band was playing at the time the picture was taken. They were
playing at the opposite end of the porch. I think there were maybe four of them, wearing
seersucker suits and flat straw hats. The banjo player only strummed and did not pick the strings.
I remember this because I played the banjo at the time, and was surprised that this technique
sounded so good. I don’t know the band’s name, but it may be the same one you are talking
about. My other thought is that unk 11 could be Willis King’s friend from Chapel Hill, and the
other two might be fraternity brothers of his. I vaguely remember what he looked like, but Willis
would know for sure. I do remember that this fellow drove a Maserati and according to Willis,
was stopped on the New Jersey Turnpike doing over 100 and got off with just a warning.
Someone hit his car in our parking lot. I think it may have been Eric Dodge after he hit a patch of
ice with his MGB. I may have a few of the details wrong. By the way, your high resolution
picture is in the mail. I am surprised how good your emailed copy looks. It is just a photograph
of the original. Bob

HF, I’ve got a surprise for you. I have a tape, that Strassner and I recorded of the Muskrat
Ramblers at that party. The recording is of reasonable quality. I can’t remember how long it is
because it’s been decades since I’ve listened to it. I do remember that during lulls in the music,
people can be heard talking in the background. I distinctly remember Dave O’Day talking to
Peaches (about religion of all things) during one of those lulls. The tape is 1/4 inch, reel-to-reel.
One reason I haven’t played it in so long is that I no longer have the necessary equipment. If you
are interested and willing to go through the trouble of finding someone that can play it and
convert it into audio CD format, I would be happy to mail it to you. If you mail me back a CD,
you can keep the original for the historical House file. Any interest? JM

Absolutely, but we will do this professionally –with the Cornell Library. This may be one of the
classic bits of Cornell history. I’ll get advice on how to handle this.
Second subject. I finally got some word on Bob Dinnie. See attached.

me in the photo. I’d confirm it in a heartbeat, except I flunked out after the Spring ‘65 semester

I had driven down for a nostalgic visit back to the old House that weekend. I can’t remember it,
but who can remember much after a Spring Weekend? Thanks for the nostalgic visit. Great to

HWF e-mail, Sat 4/27/2013 10:29 AM
Thursday was a busy day.
1. I tracked down Peter Hessinger ‘66, but as you can see from his message on p. 16 it is
doubtful that he is our man. Maybe Bates & King can call Hessinger and explore this
more thoroughly. Contact information for him is on p. 17.
2. Bob Lester’s high resolution photographic reproductions of the party picture and a 1966
composite arrived in a mailing tube. They are now being stretched out on my dining room
table. I will run then down to Staples and get 300 or 600 dpi scans made that I can
distribute them to you.
3. I rang up Ms. Bonna Boettcher, Director, Cornell Music and Fine Arts Libraries, and
spoke with her about how we will go about preserving the Muskrat Ramblers tape that
John Meyer ‘69 has. I’ll need to inquire about permissions, audio format and some
logistical matters. Expect a letter or e-mail on that.
4. We seem to have some disagreement from Bob Lester on identification of unk2 /
Frederick Harold “Pferd” Vorhis, Jr. ‘66 in the back row. Here is (1) the image from the
composite, (2) a detail from the party picture, and (3) a picture of Pferd with Florence
The sunglasses make it difficult. I’ll need to hear from all of you on this. This may be a matter of
girth. I saw Pferd twice after I moved to Arizona in 1992: once we met at Sky Harbor airport and
a second time we went to a Stanford-ASU baseball game in Tempe AZ that Pferd’s son was
playing in.
5. Then I got a call from Donald Dinnie, Bob’s brother in Massachusetts who told be about
RAD’s last days. It was a gruesome story. Death by diabetes, catheter infection, Veterans
Hospital care (very little, and that bad), blindness and despair. I used to see Bob on
business trips that took me to Boston in the Eighties and he bunked in our laundry room
here in Mesa back in 1998. By then his macular degeneration was pretty severe.
6. I am also working some investigations of Dekes in the early Fifties and DKE
involvement with the Cornell Widow. We have a similar identify-the-face exercise going
on with a 1953 composite. Jack Otter ‘53 has written some fine material that is now in
ΔX of ΔKE Research Note # : ntho ogy of Deke House Routines.
7. We still have the unk10; unk11; unk12 problem to work.
20
8. I’m also involved with some Association Board budgeting issues –all too painful to
explain.
Keep those cards and letters coming in.

George: In accordance with my e-mail to Ms. Bonna Boettcher of Wednesday, April 24, 2013
9:41 AM, and our subsequent telephone conversation, we wish to donate a ¼” reel-to-reel
magnetic tape recording of a May 1966 Delta Kappa Epsilon house party that featured the
Muskrat Ramblers Dixieland Jazz ensemble.
23
This message requests guidance on documenting the donation, shipping, obtaining permissions
from the living artists, getting a digital download of the content for evaluation, and possibly
publishing all or portions in the Delta Kappa Epsilon Collection at eCommons@Cornell. The
recording is currently the property of DKE Brother John Fernando Meyer ‘69.
Please pass this message to the proper party who can advise.
Donation and Permissions
Is there a form or standard language that we should use for John Meyer to donate the recording
and assign rights to Cornell University Libraries?
At this point we do not know which members of the Muskrat Ramblers were playing in this gig,
but some of the following are likely:
Walt Koken, (banjo), H. Philip Hodes (trombone, d. 2006), Leon Oakley (cornet), John C.
Bittence (bass), Jack Hockenberry (trombone), Michel Sebastiani (clarinet), John F. Geherin
(drums, d. 1986), Roy Rubinstein (trombone), Paul Somers (piano) and Michele Sebastiani
(clarinet).
Is there a form or standard language for a release that I can send to the living members?
Shipping
To whom at Cornell should the recording be shipped?
Evaluation
We would like the library to digitize the recording into a format that can be downloaded to us for
evaluation. I suppose this would be a standard MP3 encoding. Does eCommons@Cornell
support MP3?
At this point we don’t know anything about the quality of the recording so It is not possible to
plan further, but if it is good we will figure out how to properly identify and catalog the tunes,
and then publish the result as a downloadable file along with my Special Study #24: Spring
Weekend 966, ΔKE House Party. Regards, Bi

Not quite true. Mike and his wife got pregnant; as I recall, the kid’s tentative name was
“weatherstrip” because it kept Mike out of the draft. He moved out of the house into a mobile
24
home somewhere out by The Boxcar; I remember going there a few times, but don’t remember
exactly where it was now. Mike was one of the boarders who also worked in the kitchen. He was
a good guy. He had transferred to Cornell from Middlebury to go to vet school. He was around
until 1970, when he graduated from vet school; yes Eddie Kane was jealous ... but I don’t know
whether Eddie ever got into vet school himself or not.
My strongest memory of Mike was when his wife was complaining about the sofa that they had
in their single-wide trailer (as we called them in those days before they became “mobile homes”
...). After he’d heard enough complaining, he went out to his pickup and brought in an axe,
chopped up the sofa and threw it out the door. It was only later, when they went to buy a new
sofa that they figured out that sofas don’t (or at least didn’t in those days) fit through the doors in
mobile homes; the furniture is installed before the roof is put on the trailer, so they didn’t have a
sofa after that.
He and John Roach were pretty good friends, as I recall. Dave

You have finally done it! I have taken the 1967 Composite off the wall in the office and have
reached the following conclusions:
Vorhis, Tawresey,Ruard, Bobby Ferguson, Ed Taylor, Ed Kane, Gary Carlton,Bob Dinnie and
Gary MacMillan do not appear in the picture. Also I think Don Weadon was with the Glee Club
in the Far East that Semester so he is not there. Seed isn’t in the composite but I believe he is not
in the picture.
Now for the fellow standing next to Peter Hessinger on the far right - dark hair and glasses.
25
Howard Bales and Ed Braddock wore glasses. Bales had light colored hair - and it is not Ed
Braddock. They aren’t identified as being in the picture either.
Willis is also missing from the picture.
Are you sure that it is Mike Woodbury? I may have missed that ID.
Unknown 12 is Peter Hessinger. In one of my earlier emails I could only remember “Peter”.
I do not believe Unk 10 is Igor Nesterczuk. Are you in touch with Z to get his input?
Has Gene Pearce come forward on unknown 18? Gitmo may be required.
HOW ABOUT THE FACE BETWEEN WILEY AND HIS DATE’S FACE???? It appears to be
a short person with glasses. Could it be Ed Kane?
Lastly, Ross’s hand is blocking someone’s face and it is difficult to discern the sex of that
person. However, the girl whose face appears just to the left of Kather looks a lot like Beth
Greenslade. However the blocked face, if a male appears to part his hair on the right, not the left
as Ruard did.
Composites are marvelous.
I hope I don’t have to go to the attack to search for the 1966 composite.
Enough for now. In the bonds, Tom

John Fernando Meyer ‘69 e-mail, Tue 5/7/2013 2:23 PM
HF, I spoke to Elaine Engst this morning to tell her that I have retrieved the tape from storage
and have packaged it up and addressed it. I will take it to the post office the next time I run my
errands. I am inclined to send it via surface mail (i.e., parcel post) rather than air mail, thinking
that it is less likely to be scanned, and therefore damaged, that way.
I told Elaine that it was recorded in stereo with a Sony reel-to-reel recorder. She indicated that
those machines delivered close to studio performance. All of this is very encouraging.
The writing on the tape’s box indicates it was recorded Spring Weekend 1967 and not 1966 as I
had indicated. That’s 46 years ago. JM

[Responding to HWF’s question about the origins of nicknames for Thomas Edward Battaglini
‘46 (ΘΞ) and DRB ‘68] While attending a party at Alpha Delt during a party weekend Tom fell
and banged his head to the extent that he needed attention at the infirmary. The next day when he
showed up bandaged and had to explain himself he became known as Crash Battaglini. I think it
was Tom Lee who came up with that. He famously explained “I slipped on a bool of peer” which
28
was widely acknowledged as an indication that alcohol consumption may have been a factor.
There was general confusion on how to pronounce my name since most of the WASPS in the
House had never run into such a thing (Caesar Grasselli, notwithstanding). The silent G caused
special consternation. I believe Bates first tagged me as Botticelli while I was pledging (after the
famous Italian Renaissance painter of the same name.) Then I think it was Vanderploeg that
incorporated a G and came up with Bag-O-Shells. My fraternity mug has Botticelli on it though
no one ever called me that after I was initiated.
