Virginia Tech Grant Is Renewed

A grant of $9300 has been received by Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Va., to continue a study for the Air Materiel Command on plating of aluminum on steel, Earle B, Norris, dean of engineering, announced recently.

The first grant for this project, begun in April 1950, was for $4300. Nelson F. Murphy, research professor of chemical engineering at Virginia Tech, is in charge of the fundamental research project and assisting Dr. Murphy is Peter H. Watkins, assistant professor of chemical engineering at the institute.

ASTM Committee Plans Research in Carnauba Wax

In an attempt to develop standard specifications for carnauba wax, ASTM research projects have been under way in order to establish accurate test data, according to a recent announcement. Committee D-21 on wax polishes and related mateiials, through its Subcommittee II on raw materials, is undertaking a cooperative research project for detecting wax additives. A sample of carnauba wax to which paraffin has been added is being sent to those members of the subcommittee who have signified a desire to participate.

The chairman of the subcommittee, Melvin Fuld of Fuld Bros., Inc., Baltimore, Md., has indicated that anyone desiring to cooperate with the subcommittee in this cooperative work would be welcome.

A second research project which is being inaugurated will involve round-robin testing of samples of carnauba wax No. 3 for determination of dirt and water. All information on these two projects will be collected by chairman Fuld and then sent to W. W. Walton, chairman of committee D-21, at the National Bureau of Standards for further analysis, tabulation, and study.

Battelle Chosen For Oil Well Research

Drilling Research, Inc., a nonprofit corporation whose members represent more than half of the world's oil-well drilling capacity, has just initiated a study of drilling methods at Battelle Institute, Columbus, Ohio, according to a recent announcement.

"It is vital that the cost of drilling an oil well be reduced," said J. V. Pennington of Houston, Tex., technical director of Drilling Research, "or vast reserves of marginal prodxiction potential cannot be drilled and higher prices for all petroleum products used in our cars, homes, and industries will be inevitable.
