The original PIBETA Experiment (R-89.01)

GOALS:

Precisely test Standard Model and QCD predictions:

• π+ → π0e+νe – main goal

◦ SM tests from CKM unitarity

• π+ → e+νeγ(ee)

◦ FA/FV , π polarizability (χPT prediction)

◦ tensor coupling besides V −A

• µ+ → e+νeνµγ(ee)

◦ departures from V −A in Lweak

Experimental Method: Summary

• Detect π+ decays at rest (during a delayed 180 ns gate).

• Use π+ → e+ν prescaled for normalization.

• Accept every πβ trigger – unbiased (γγ coincidences above Michel

Problems with pion form factors prior to 1999

A.A. Poblaguev found: [PL B238 (1990) 108, PL B286 (1992) 169]

(a) inconsistencies in data set (part. istra data),

(b) need to include Tensor q-l coupling with:

FT ∼ −0.0056± 0.0017 . (updated recently in several papers)

P. Herczeg: [PRD 49 (1994) 247]

confirmed there is room (barely) for FT of this order of magnitude

from other weak decay data (S = 0 leptoquarks at tree level?).

M. Chizhov: [Mod. Phys. Lett. A8 (1993) 2753]

proposed a new intermediate chiral boson with anomalous T

interaction with matter. (updated recently in several papers)

Details of the proposed run

Run for 15 weeks in πE1 beam area, starting in May 2004.

Optimize for 1-arm triggers at ∼ 100− 200 k πstop/s.

Simplified one-piece target .

◦ Counting statisics in the first phase:

NA : (NB +NC) = 31 k : 12 k

proposed run: add another ∼ 20 k in B, C, and ∼ 3 k in A.

◦ New data will have S/B > 40!

◦ This will enable us to extend the usable phase space down to

∼ 10MeV in Ee, Eγ , and θeγ down to ∼ 30◦.

◦ We’ll add ∼ 300 k high-quality muon radiative events; important

as a cross-check.

◦ We’ll add ∼ 5 k high-quality pion beta decay events.
