HAPPY WINTER SEASON! ΚΑΛΟ ΧΕΙΜΩΝΑ!

Being a Christian means being a good Steward:

One of the greatest lessons parents can teach their children is to love God. One way to love God is to care for the gifts He has given to us, which means being a good steward. A steward is defined as someone who takes care of and is responsible for things or people. A Christian steward acknowledges his/her God giv-en gifts and uses them in a positive way not only for themselves but also to help others. It is the purpose of the Christian way of life to help others along the jour-ney of life. The Christian Steward sees the entire world as a gift from God and sees themselves as stewards of that world. We have been put in charge for caring for and protecting these gifts. The gifts from God are not limited to our own personal gifts, but the environment

around us, the animal kingdom, plant world material treasures, cities and lands and all people.

The economic principles as understood by the world are also different from the Christian understanding of economy. Christianity has its own principles of econom-ics, which are not modeled after capitalism or socialism. In its purest form, the Chris-tian belief of stewardship or economy teaches that a person owns nothing. God owns the world and that people are the just the custodians. Everything belongs to God and He has entrusted us to care for them. Think of it like a little child who asks his father or mother, if she can have some money because she wants to buy her mommy or daddy a present. If we keep this image in mind, perhaps we can understand the concept of Christian stewardship or Christian economy a little better.

What we can do is teach our children or grandchildren to share with God, that which God has blessed us with. After all, it is a blessing from God that we have all that we have earned and have been given, which includes the intellectual and physical ability to perform our skill in order to earn money. If we look at these aspects of our life as “God given gifts” we develop a clearer perspective of the Christian understand-ing of economy and Christian stewardship. What we must do, a Christian Orthodox parents is to teach our children that stewardship is like “giving back” a portion of the blessings (gifts) that were given to us in the first place by God. It is a form of grati-tude.

We must teach them that giving back to God benefits them. It does not make God any richer or “better off ”, but it certainly makes us better in the eyes of God and richer in spirit. Giving back to God can take different forms. For some it is monetary, (a portion of their earnings of profits). Stewardship can also be a giving of ones time or talent. Dedicating ones time is an extremely valuable commodity because money can

Page 3: PANAGIA COHASSET · nativity assumption of virgin greek or - thodox church 811 road, cohasset, ma 02025 781.383.6380 NATIVITY ASSUMPTION OF THE VIRGIN …

Page No. 3

be replaced, but dedicating time is finite and personal and once it is gone we cannot get it back. Dedicating time is a most precious gift to give back to God. Along with time, talent is also a precious gift because it is a service that we offer to God, which directly benefits His people or His church. If someone had the skill of a carpenter, an electrician, a cook, a lawyer a doctor, a business person, an administrator, financial planner or a teacher, dedicating a portion of their time and talent can be a very pre-cious and valuable form of Christian Stewardship.

One thing for all of us to be careful about understands that giving money is not a substitute for giving of oneself. A dollar or even a check given to the church without dedicating oneself in terms of time or personal talent is empty. It is not stewardship in its fullest sense. While the monetary gift is appreciated, it is the person that has the most value. Simply put, a check sent to the church without the presence of the person has a small value in terms of Christian Stewardship. Many people fall in this category. They feel a check sent to the church once a year puts them in “right stand-ing”. While the church relies of the generosity of its members to sustain itself, un-fortunately, a check alone in somehow short in terms of Christian Stewardship. The presence and participation of the individual member makes them a Good Steward.

Encourage your children from a young age to be Christian Stewards. Show interest in your child’s contribution. Encourage them to set aside a little bit of their allow-ance to offer. Another good habit is to have them purchase a canned good from their allowance to offer the Food for Friends, Food for Lazarus ministry. If possible, take them to the food pantry to make the giving experience real for them.

Lastly, be a good example for them too. Let them see your offering in the tray and when you do so there is a good chance that they will follow your example when they become too become parents someday. Na Evlogemeno, May it be blessed.

+ Fr Constantine

PRAYER FOR OUR CHILDREN

O Greatly Merciful Lord, Who gives food to the birds of the sky and to all living things on earth, who watches over the flower that sprouts amidst the rocky cliffs: nourish, bring up and protect our children also. Help us O Lord to plant in their souls what is good and useful for the Holy Church and the nation, and what is well pleas-ing to You, that Your Holy Name may be exalted through them. Fill them OLord with the enlightened Wisdom and understanding, which comes down form You. Protect them from all snares of the enemies both visible

and invisible. Command Your angels as always to be their enlightened guides and counselors in all-good works.

Sunday February 12th 2017 Godparent/ Grandparent Sunday.

This Sunday tradition is modeled after the event of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple found in Luke 2:22. In this event Jesus was held in the arms of His godparent, the Righteous Elder, Symeon. We remember this event by giving the opportunity for Godparents and Godchildren to stand together and reconfirm their baptismal vows. Godparents, Grandparents and Godchildren will be asked to sit together. Just before Communion Father Constantine will read a baptismal prayer and ask both Godparents and Children to reconfirm their baptismal vows. When coming for Communion Father will ask those Godparents to come with their God-children and a lit candle.

A Prayer for our Neighborhood Families:

I pray to you God, for the families of my neighbor-hood. Visit them. Throw their troubles out of them and bring hope to them. Make the daily cares that devour the heart disappear. Present solutions to life’s problems. Settle the disturbed relationships among members of the different families. O Lord remind the people of our area that You exist, that You are a strong and loving Protector. Keep always O Lord, anything that causes the disappearance of peace from souls and

the escape of rest from us. Stay with us in our neighborhood and spread Your peace along with the night. Let harshness of the day and its struggles not spread over into the night too.

Archbishop Demitrios of America

Wisdom from the Fathers

Preserve marriages in peace and harmony, nurture the in-fants; instruct the youth strengthen the aged; give courage to the faint hearted; reunite those separated; bring back those in error; defend the widows; protect the orphans; liberate the captives; heal the sick….From the liturgy of St Basil

Most people pray as if there is no God with them, or as if He did not heed their prayers. Let us also ascribe to the Lord at least the same amount of attention that good parents show to the requests of their children, at least that provident and attentive love which good parents have for their children. St John of Kronstadt

“Don’t pressure your children,” says Elder Porphyrios. “Whatever you want to say to them, say it with your prayers. Children don’t listen with their ears. They’ll only listen to what we want to tell them when divine grace appears and enlightens them. When you want to say something to your child, say it to the Theotokos instead and she will do all the work. Your prayer will become a spiritual hug, which will embrace your children and captivates them….”

Train up a child in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.

restoration committee meeting

THE NEXT MEETINGS OF THE REPAIR AND RESTORATION AND THE COMMUNITY CENTER BUILD COMMITTEES WILL BE A JOINT MEETING THE EVENING OF TUESDAY, FEBRAURY 21, 7:00 P.M. AT OUR COMMUNITY CENTER AROUND THE CORNER FROM THE CHURCH. ALL PARISHIONERS WHO WISH TO ROLL UP THEIR SLEEVES AND PARTICIPATE ARE WELCOME. THE PARISH COUNCIL WILL MEET IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE COMMITTEE MEETINGS.

It is imperative that any repairs have true compatibility and will behave in the same manner as the existing structure. Repairs must expand and contract with the masonry and be breathable enough to allow water vapor to escape thus avoiding failure of the masonry due to freeze/thaw cycles or salt re-crystallisation. Pollution, poor maintenance and inadequate detailing can all damage historic facades. There are no standard solutions to repair problems -each project must be individually assessed.

Dirt or soiling can take many forms: airborne particles, gaseous pollutants and organic aerosols from industrial or vehicular emissions; biological soiling by algae, fungi, bacteria and lichen; non-biological soiling by iron staining, paint or graffiti - the list goes on. It may be that the soiling causes stone deterioration or decay, or reduces the permeability of the substrate; or it may simply appear as an unsightly surface discoloration.

Architectural surfaces can build up a patina due to airborne particles, weathering cycles and the mineralogy of the stone itself. Unlike surface dirt, the patina does not simply lie across the surface of the stone but is combined to varying depths within the masonry, be it stone, brick or terracotta. Although not necessarily damaging in itself great care must be undertaken if this is to be removed - inappropriate methods could destroy the original and weaken the substrate to decay or more commonly mobilizing the minerals beneath the stone surface resulting in discoloration. In order to assess the need for cleaning and prior to any recommendations Stone Restoration requires a thorough survey to identify the material and any relevant factors which may have gone unnoticed (for example formulations of mortars, stone misstated on documentation) and any repairs, re-pointing, or visible damage.

In addition to the general criteria the context of the building itself, its history, construction, location and proximity to other buildings etc will also be borne in mind. The type of soiling /staining and best appropriate cleaning method will be detailed in our documentation and bill of quantities.

repair/restoration - something to consider

president’s message - TIME TO GET INVOLVED

THE STEWARDS OF PANAGIA PARISH HAVE SPOKEN. THE VIABILITY AND VITALITY OF OUR CHURCH AND PARISH ARE OF PARAMOUNT INTEREST AND CONCERN TO ALL OF US AND OUR FAMILIES.

AT NOVEMBER GENERAL ASSEMBLY WE ESTABLISHED TWO COMMITTEES, ONE FOR REPAIRS AND RESTORATION OF OUR CHURCH, AND ONE FOR OUR RENEWED EFFORT TO BUILD OUR COMMUNITY CENTER. HERE IS A REPORT ON COMMITTEE ACTIVITY TO DATE:

OUR REPAIR AND RESTORATION COMMITTEE MET JANUARY 10. WE SPOKE ABOUT THE SCOPE OF WORK AND ATTEMPTED TO PRIORITIZE WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. WE AGREED THAT THE FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS WOULD BE TO MAKE OUR CHURCH WEATHERTIGHT. THIS WILL STOP THE WATER INTRUSION AND PREVENT FURTHER DAMAGE. WE FURTHER AGREED THAT THE BULK OF THIS EFFORT INVOLVES THE BELL TOWER AND THE AREA (EXTERIOR) OVER THE ALTAR. REMORTARING AND SOME ROOF REPAIR (MOSTLY FLASHING) ARE A MAJOR PORTION OF BOTH EFFORTS. NEXT STEPS INCLUDE AN OFFICIAL SCOPE OF WORK FROM AN ENGINEER (WE HAVE THAT BUT NEED AN UPDATE) AND A SEARCH FOR CONTRACTORS WHO WILL PROVIDE COST ESTIMATES. NEXT, A CHOICE OF CONTRACTORS. IF WE ARE SUCCESSFUL AT THESE ENDEAVORS, THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY WOULD BE APPROACHED FOR THE NECESSARY FUNDING. TIMETABLE IS A.S.A.P.; HOPEFULLY STARTING THIS SPRING.

OUR COMMUNITY CENTER BUILD COMMITTEE MET JANUARY 24 (WHAT A TURNOUT! DESPITE THE BAD WEATHER, MOST OF THE 22 SEATS IN THE ROOM WERE FILLED.). HERE WE DETERMINED THAT PANAGIA PARISH HAS THE WILL TO GO FORWARD WITH THIS LONG DELAYED PROJECT. WE LOOKED AT WHAT WE CALLED “THE MARLBORO MODEL”. THE MARLBORO CHURCH BUILT A COMMUNITY CENTER BREAKING GROUND IN 2010 AND OPENING IN FEB. OF 2011. WE SHARED PICTURES AND DETAILS WITH ALL OUR STEWARDS PRESENT. THEIR COMMUNITY HAS GROWN AND PROSPERED AS A RESULT. NEXT WE LOOKED AT A PROPSOAL FROM A BUILDER (THE FOLINO PROPSOAL -- SOLICITED A FEW YEARS AGO) TO GIVE US AN IDEA OF BUILDING COSTS. AND WE TALKED BRIEFLY ABOUT FUNDING THE BUILD. WE ALSO AGREED THAT WE NEED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT OUR REPAIR/RESTORATION EFFORTS, BUT THAT WE NEED TO CONDUCT THESE TWO MAJOR EFFORTS SIMULTANEOUSLY BECAUSE OF THE DURATION OF THIS BUILD PROCESS WHICH INVOLVES A GREAT DEAL OF TIME. IT WOULD BE NICE TO RESTART THIS “BUILD” IN 2018, BUT WE JUST DON’T HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION AT THIS TIME TO ESTABLISH ANY TIMELINES.

CONCLUSION: BOTH THESE EFFORTS MUST PROCEED WITH ALL DELIBERATE SPEED FOR CONTINUED VIABILITY & VITALITY, FOR GROWTH, AND FOR THE FINANCIAL STABILITY OF OUR COMMUNITY. IT WILL INVOLVE THE REQUSITE TIME, TALENT, AND TREASURE.

WE ASK ALL STEWARDS: FIRST AND FOREMOST TO PARTICIPATE IN THE REPAIR AND RESTORATION PROCESS AND IN PLANNING AND EXECUTING THE PLANS FOR OUR COMMUNITY CENTER. THAT WILL INCLUDE RAISING THE NECESSARY FUNDING FOR OUR BUILDING.

WILL YOU BE INVOLVED ???

WITH LOVE, AND FOR THE PARISH COUNCIL, ED.

sunday school

Dear Families,

It is such a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with our young people on Sundays. Although, sometimes we have one student, sometimes we have many students and sometimes there are no students we are ready each week, with lessons about our faith for our children. As we head in into February we will

learn more about the parables, the Icons and the Lenten season. I hope that your family will try and join us.

If you would like more information about our Sunday School, or would like to volunteer please let me know.
