Ν Shell Chemical's Integrated Tow
Four barges and a pusher-type river boat Have arrived at a Chicago terminal o n the first leg of a 22-day round trip. In the first integrated petrochemical tow o n the Mississippi Waterways System, says Shell Chemical, the barges carried glycerol, hexylene glycol, and other products from the company's Houston plant. Three of the Dravo-built barges have nickel-lined steel compartments like the one on the left, a design which permits marine shipment for chemicals which usually travel in specially lined tank cars. The tow r>oat, built by St. Louis Shipbuilding & Steel, has two diesel engines, a retractable pilot house for clearing low bridges, and is equipped to steam heat the glycerol compartments
