NEPSIS Saint Sophia s Greek Orthodox Church 325 Waring Road Syracuse, New York 13224 Phone (315) 446-5222 Fax (315) 251-1654 Spiritual watchfulness and alertness. Watch, there- fore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming(Matthew 24:42) Χριστός ἀνέστη! Christ is Risen! Listen to the Paschal hymn of St. Gregory Nazianzus: This is the day of resurrection. Let us offer God its first fruits – which is ourselves. Let us, as His most precious children, return to the likeness of God. What is verily His likeness in us. Let us reverence our worth. Let us honor our Exemplar. Let us come to understand the power of the mystery wherein Christ died. I dont know this hymn by itself, but I know it because of a sermon given on the hymn by St. Dorotheus of Gaza. I love reading the sermons of the saints, and try to emulate their practices in my own preaching. St. Dorotheus focuses on the sacrificial aspect of this hymn, especially the line, let us offer God its first fruits – which is ourselves. The Passover (from which we get the word Pascha) consisted mainly of sacrifice – the Israelites would bring to the Lord their gifts as an expression of their repentance and of their participation in the story of salvation. This is why our Lord specifically arrived in Jerusalem at that time of the year, Passover. He would become the Paschal lamb, sacrificed for the sins of the world. So there is our model for sacrifice: we dont offer spices and goats, but we, like Christ, offer ourselves to God as a living sacrifice. God in the Passover, sacrificed for us, and we in turn sacrifice for Him. But our sacrifice is not a sacrifice of things, but of ourselves, a sacrifice of our hearts. To quote St. Dorotheus: Pascha, the Passover which we are now keeping and which the Saint commends to our celebration, is enacted in the soul, which comes out of the spiritual Egypt, that is, from sin. When the soul passes over from sin to virtue, then it celebrates the Passover of the Lord. As Evagrius says, the Passover of the Lord is the passage away from evil.St. Peter said to our Lord, Behold, we have given up everything and followed you. He had no possessions, riches or gold or silver, he only had his net that was very old, as St. John Chrysostom says. And how does he arrive at this conclusion? He points out that the scriptures tell us the fishermen had to repair it after they used it, and that, when it caught the 153 fish (St. John 21:1-14), the gospel writer was surprised that it didnt tear. That is a serious and close reading of the Bible. What a great example the saints offer to us. What a blessing to celebrate again as a family the happy and bright feast of Pascha at St. Sophias! But our celebration brings with it certain responsibilities, brothers and sisters. We participate in the life of Christ by attending to his Resurrection from the dead, so we must also participate in His crucifixion and death. This means that we must give of ourselves: to carry in our hearts the joy of Pascha. Ἀληθῶς ἀνέστη! Truly, He is Risen! PR ES IDEN T ’S M ESSAG E

Dear Parish, It is May and the 2019 Pascha service has been celebrated. We filled the darkened church with the light from our candles. Together we sang, “Christos Anesti, Christ Is Risen!”. The priest loudly proclaimed it and we responded with “Alithos Anesti, Truly He Is Risen”. St. John Chrysostom assures us that Hades is vexed, EPICHRANTHI. Hope and joy based on the promise of Pascha and our faith in that promise are ours. On a less exalted but still very important level, what is also ours is St. Sophia’s Church and community. At the April 14th General Assembly meeting, I reviewed the results of the survey. To those of you that submitted a survey, we are extremely grateful to you for contributing your valuable time, your honest information, and your thoughtful suggestions. Some survey results were as expected, but many Parishioners’ opinions provided new insights. We compiled 170 returns for a terrific 31% return rate. The survey results may be viewed on the Church website, www.stsophias.org. Among the highest tallies was the answer to question 20 "In what way should the Parish reach out to the community to help others?" 82% of respondents want the parish to reach out to former St. Sophia’s parishioners. To that end we, the Parish Council, are proposing that we have some homecoming events in the fall. We want your ideas about what you think will be the right way to do this. We fully appreciate the fact that each person who has left us has a reason. More importantly, you may know that reason, but we need your help to reach out to them. We understand that some have made life changing decisions and are unlikely to respond to any of our overtures. On the other hand, it is likely that a kind and respectful welcome could make a difference to others. You have told us you want them back. We too want them back. So give us your ideas and help us in making our Homecoming Weekend a successful one. St. Sophia's is going into high Festival mode. The baking schedule is out. The various Festival departments can always use more hands and feet. Each year long serving, dedicated Festival volunteers have to cut back on their commitments. Age, infirmity, obligations of all sorts bring this about. If you are not burdened by these difficulties, please volunteer. If you are not sure where you are needed tell any parish councilor that you are looking for a place to work at the festival or email me at [email protected]. And don't forget to order you tickets for Basile the comedian. He is performing on Saturday—May 4th. It should be a great night of fun, food, drink and fellowship. The show is suitable for kids 15 and over. Come early and leave laughing. Χριστός Ανέστη Peter Manolakos Parish Council President

Stewardship Corner

Thanks to all who attended the April 14th General Assembly meeting. Everyone at the meeting and everyone on St Sophia’s Listserv now has a copy of the survey results. We hope you find them as interesting and informative as we do.

The survey results will help us all to focus our energy on areas and issues that are meaningful to many parishioners. When we work together we accomplish so much. Our work, our energy, should be driven by the strong belief that we can make St. Sophia’s HOME for all who are with us now and all who come in the future.

Of course the committee will be glad to place the flags for you. If you have filled the required form appearing in the NEPSIS, just let us know who will place the flags, you or our AHEPA Chapter. The raising of the Greek Flag at City Hall for celebrating Greek Independence Day was successful, our thanks to Dr. James Telonis and his committee and Father David. Our chapter feels that the money was well spent to charter the bus, as it helped to bring more parishioners to the event. Just for your information, we had 71 parishioners at City Hall. Let us have 100 + next year.

Looking forward to seeing you at our events.

Our Greek Festival is a combined effort and we need your help to make it a successful event again this year. Please give your time and talents by volunteering. Last year for certain volunteer dinner line positions, we utilized an online volunteer signup software system with great success. With this online signup we were able to balance our staff volunteers to provide better coverage that ultimately made it more efficient to manage the large number of attendees. This year, we are expanding this online volunteer sign-up to more positions. Below are the positions that will utilize the online sign-up:

New Festival Volunteer Online Sign-up

Outside Tent Dinner Line Volunteers Online Sign-up
