“Behold, I stand at the door …” Metropolitan of Phanariou Agathanghelos

By the Grace of God, we have entered the Holy and Great Week, the Week of the Passion, in the midst

of temptations, distress and affliction, bearing the Cross of the present time. We are again called upon to experience the mystery of the Cross and the hope of the Resurrection away from the liturgical life of the Church, as this is performed inside the church and as we have been taught from our childhood to this day; maybe even abstaining from the Sacrament of the Holy Communion, for reasons imposed by human need and sickness. This is not easy, particularly for

each soul which finds its truth within faith, through love and humility, silence and discretion, fight and prayer, spiritual exercise and tears, an ethos that lives up to the Crucifixion and a mood that is permeated with the Resurrection, by example and model.

He Who Comes in theName of the Lord

In this space, we continue to examine the Divine Liturgy and what it teaches us about our faith and our encounter with our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ. On this Feast of Palm Sunday we commemorate the triumphal entry of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ into the Holy City of Jerusalem. Palm Sunday is one of the Dominical Feasts which we celebrate throughout the year.

On these great feasts of the Lord, the liturgy changes to reflect the special nature of the events com-memorated. On Palm Sunday, these changes appear first in Orthros in which the Matins do not follow the typical Sunday order that commem-orates the Resurrection, but follows that of a weekday service. The Gos-pel reading, for example, is chanted from the Beautiful Gates rather than the south side of the Holy Table.

In the Divine Liturgy, the order of service calls for the replacement of the typical Entrance Hymn (“Come let us worship and bow down be-fore Christ our God”) with one that reflects the tenor and tone of the feast. Today, the Entrance Hymn, echoing the words of the Psalmist David, declares, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. God is the Lord, and He revealed Himself to us. Save us, O Son of God, who sat on a donkey’s colt.”

Furthermore, on a Dominical Feast, when the choir chants the Entrance Hymns, the Hymn of the Church is omitted and the Dismissal Hymns and the Kontakion are that of the Feast.

The sequence of readings, de-fined in the Lectionary, is interrupt-ed in favor of Epistle and Gospel readings that pertain to the events of the feast of the Lord. The hymn to the Theotokos, Communion Hymn, and hymn in which we typically chant, “We have seen the true light” also change.

Today, the Liturgy calls us to honor “He who comes in the name of the Lord.” Today, we join the children of Jerusalem and cry out, “Hosanna!” Today, we celebrate the Prince of Peace who enters the Holy City sitting “on a donkey’s colt.” In the Liturgy we are joined in prayer with faithful, who throughout the ages, hail the Conqueror of Death.

gnancy and innocence that only love can cause. He stood at the door of our hearts and knocked so that we may open it to Him, no matter if we occasionally forgot about it, accustomed to self-evidence and to the complacency of an arrogant faith. The relation-ship with God is not knowledge. It is a communion, a mystery of the heart, an incandescent relationship of love performed in silence. God allowed for this testing experience to occur. Why? Let us ponder on it, yes! Let us not, however, hasten to provide a de-finitive answer. This piece of advice is addressed par-ticularly to those who are used to amplifying their own opinion in a noisy, presumptuous, provocative, arrogant, patronizing manner, as if they could ever

raise themselves higher than the love and the justice of God, in fact becoming nothing more than direc-tors of cheerleaders. “Do not call God just, for His justice is not manifest in the things concerning you. […] if here He is merciful, we may believe that He will not change”, notes Saint Isaac the Syrian (Hom-ily 60). Indeed, if God were not merciful, we would be doomed. As to the complaint addressed to God by just men, “Awake, why do You sleeep, O Lord? Arise, […]” (Psalm 44,23), Christ gives His own an-swer: “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And , behold, I come quickly” (Revel. 22,11-12, KJV).

Jesus said, “Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazaros, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazaros also to death, be-cause on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Je-sus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazaros out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.

In loving this body, that is, the church, bring water for his feet and kiss his feet, not only pardoning those

who have become enmeshed in sin but by your peace giving them harmony and putting them at peace. Pour

ointment on his feet, that the whole house wherein Christ reclines at table may be filled with the odor of your ointment, that all at table with him may be pleased with your perfume. St. Ambrose of Milan

Before the Resurrection, the Crucified Lord pre-pares us to live the new darkness over all the land from the sixth hour unto the ninth hour, in the time of this world. Yet, it is the light of the Resurrection which shines upon our course to the end of this age, our path to eternity. This is the light that grants us hope, expec-tation, love, goodness, peace, patience, self-sacrifice, sensibility, tenderness, humaneness. It is this light that keeps the world from decomposition and decay and illuminates the entire existence, life, sustenance, the worldly and the heavenly affairs. No one can take it away from us or be deprived of it. It is our Father’s gift, our rest and consolation, our joy and blessing! We believe in the Resurrection and eagerly expect it. We know that the death of Christ annihilated the power of death. This is how we can hold up! We live in patient hope and anticipation. God our Father allows us to suffer the test to the point where we can endure it; and when human vessels can no longer hold, then comes the miracle!

Churches may be closed. Holy Services may have been suspended. The solemn procession with the Epi-taphios may not be held in the evening of Great Friday. We may be prevented from lighting our candle during the “Come, Receive the Light” hymn and from glori-fying the Risen Christ in chorus during the mystery of the Synaxis. Still, no one may prevent us from singing along with the Church the Holy Services we shall at-tend on television, on the radio, on the Internet. No one may deprive us of the joy to chant the manly and hope-bearing hymns of the Holy Week, as we learned them and are still accustomed to chanting them softly. No one may deprive us of the possibility of praying in a loving disposition vis-à-vis all those blessed men and women of the medical science, who fight in the first line, with their anguish like drops of blood falling on their faces and their ailing patients; or of murmur-ing words of prayer for the departed.

This year we are faced with a challenge. Or, to put it better, with a pedagogical invitation, which, through testing, upends everything that we hold to be self-ev-ident in the relationship with God and man: to live our responsibility anew as citizens and not colonizers of the world; to reassess our needs, priorities, choices and criteria, our truth, to discuss with ourselves ear-nestly; to render our homes private churches; to live as people of God the fact that our “sorrow shall be turned into joy”; once again to appreciate how pre-

cious a gift it is to partake of the Holy Communion and of the communion of our brethren we are now deprived of; how invaluable the gift of good health is; the beauty of the sensation of celebration, the value of coming together in love and peace, of greeting one another, shaking hands, embracing our people, being able to go to church. O how the sound of church bells poignantly reminds us of the spiritual and Eucharis-tic aspect of our lives, the quality of another life, and seems to invite us to the church so that we may live the beauty of our faith and tradition, to experience the mystery of God’s love. We stay at home and remain in the love of God! Only in this manner can we deal with the sorrow of these days, given that “Christ is Risen, and Life Reigns” and love chases fear away. If each one of us starts complaining, cursing his or her fate, lev-eling accusations, we should seriously think whether we can fully realize our responsibility as citizens and discover the essence of the test, the martyrdom and the witness, behind appearances, qua faithful. Be-sides, through the power of memory, the scars that this ordeal will leave behind will continue throwing not only our own authenticity and consciousness into question, but particularly those of the leaders of the world, who will be called upon to measure up to their responsibility and truthfulness, and to be meted with the measure and criterion of the Cross: namely, the cross of the ordeal of the peoples of the Earth. At this point judgment will be merciless, because the scales of justice in this case are the Cross of Christ.

Concluding these thoughts, we would like to note that what is happening these days is ALSO an ecclesi-astical problem. And it concerns the Church equally, because disease also strikes the flock, the people of the Church, its pleroma indiscriminately, as it strikes ev-ery human person, who is a creature of God.

The measures that the state urges us to observe not only for our own health but also for that of be-loved persons and of our fellow citizens, should en-courage us to practice a form of daily exercise which is not outside the logic of the ascetic disposition of the Church. It is the Church that invites us to think that God always and today calls upon us, through un-ceasing prayer and humility, to overcome our one and only sin: our indifference to the Risen Christ. Let this also be our own Paschal appeal !

Lord, have mercy ! Glory be to God !May God be with us !

Holy Week Services at the Annunciation Cathedral 12-19 AprilPALM SUNDAY EVENING [Services at 7:00

pm] - This evening’s service calls to mind the be-ginning of Jesus’ suffering. The gospel describes the plotting of the priests and elders to trap Jesus into convicting Himself as a religious heretic. Through parables, Jesus tells us of His coming betrayal, tri-al, conviction and execution by crucifixion. The hymns of this service commemorate two things; the first, the prophetic figure of Joseph, who, while virtuous, nonetheless suffered unjustly at the hands of his brothers before being greatly rewarded, and the second, the parable of the fig tree, which in failing to bear fruit, became a symbol of fallen cre-ation, and of our own lives, in which we also have failed to bear spiritual fruit.

HOLY MONDAY EVENING [Services at 7:00 pm] - This evening’s theme is the need for watchful-ness and preparation, lest we be called unprepared before the awesome judgement seat of Christ to render an account of ourselves. The gospel reading contrasts the efforts of the Pharisees to trick and discredit Jesus, with the forceful resistance which Christ mounts against their evil. The hymns re-mind us of the parable of the Ten Virgins, in which the faithful Christian is exhorted to vigilance.

HOLY TUESDAY EVENING [Services at 7:00 pm] - The need for true repentance is the concern of Tuesday evening’s service. This trans-formation from the life of sin to a life of faith and obedience is exemplified for us in the person of the sinful woman who received the gift for for-giveness when she anointed Jesus with myrrh and washed His feet. The highlight of the service is the hymn written in honor of this woman by St. Kassiani. The Gospel meditation foretells of the coming suffering of Christ and recalls His inner struggles and agony.

HOLY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING [Services at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm] - The primary theme of Holy Wednesday is our human need for the healing and forgiveness that comes into our lives when we establish a relation-ship with God through Jesus Christ. We are re-minded that the way to this relationship is to be found, above all else, through the life of prayer. In the Sacrament of Holy Unction, the faithful are

anointed and thus, healed both physically and spir-itually. They are also reconciled to God and one an-other so that they might receive the gift of the Holy Eucharist instituted by Christ at the Last Supper.

HOLY THURSDAY MORNING [Services at 6:30 am] - On Holy Thursday morning, we ascend Mt. Zion with Christ and the Twelve, and enter into the upper room. Once there, we witness the awesome moment when, at the Last Supper, Christ abolishes the ritual practice of the Old Covenant and establishes the ritual of the New Covenant, prophesied by Jeremiah, through the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The faithful receive Holy Com-munion at that Holiest of Liturgies.

HOLY THURSDAY EVENING [Services at 7:00 pm] - In this service, we commemorate the undeserved suffering of Jesus Christ, endured for our sake, so that we might be reconciled anew to God our Father. The Gospel readings witness for us the betrayal and arrest of Jesus, his trial and convic-tion, and finally his torture, crucifixion and death at the hands of a sinful humanity. This evening’s service also includes the procession representing Christ carrying His own cross along the Via Dolo-rosa, and ends when we see before us the King of Glory crucified.

HOLY FRIDAY AFTERNOON [Services at 3:00 pm] - In this service, we are once again rever-ent witnesses to the undeserved suffering of Christ, to his terrible passion and death. What is remem-bered in a special way through liturgical commem-oration and procession, is the faithfulness and love of Joseph of Arimathea who tenderly removed Christ’s body from the cross, wrapped it in clean linen, and carried it to his own unused tomb for burial.

HOLY FRIDAY EVENING [Services at 7:00 pm] - On Holy Friday evening, the theme is Christ’s descent into Hades during which the Gospel of re-pentance and reconciliation with God is shared with those who died before Christ’s saving dispen-sation in the flesh. The service begins with lamen-tations sung as we stand before the tomb of Christ commemorating His unjust punishment and the shedding of His innocent blood. But the service ends on a note of joy and hope, with the reading of

the Prophet Ezekiel in which he describes his vi-sion of our resurrection yet to come; in the midst of despair, we are told there is hope, for not even death can separate us from the unfailing love and power of God. Death is about to be conquered and faithfulness rewarded.

HOLY SATURDAY MORNING [Services at 9:00 am] - On Holy Saturday morning we cele-brate the theme of faithfulness receiving its reward. The crucifixion is over, Christ is buried, the twelve apostles and other disciples are scattered and de-feated. And yet, three myrrh-bearing women come in faithfulness to perform the last act of love--to anoint Jesus according to the Jewish burial custom. Their unwavering devotion is rewarded--they are the first to share in Christ’s triumph over evil and death. They are the first witnesses to the Resurrec-tion. This joy is commemorated through the scat-tering of bay leaves and rose petals by the priest.

HOLY SATURDAY EVENING [Services at 11:00 pm] - The lamentations of the previous night are repeated and the church is plunged into

darkness to symbolize the despair and defeat ex-perienced before the dawn of Christ’s victory over the Enemy of our salvation. Precisely at midnight, a single light emerges from the altar represent-ing the victory of Christ over death, the defeat of the Prince of Darkness by Jesus, the Light of the World. As the light is passed from person to person, it pushes back the darkness of the church and defeats it completely. The Resurrection is pro-claimed in song and triumphant procession, and after the Liturgy, its light is carried into our homes so that they too might be filled with its light and warmth and triumph.

EASTER SUNDAY MORNING [Services at 10:30 am] - Christ’s Resurrection and victory is af-firmed in this morning’s theme. The Gospel is read in several languages to illustrate the universality of the Good News of the Resurrection and its procla-mation to the very ends of the earth. Love, forgive-ness, reconciliation, triumph and joy—these are the gifts which we receive because Christ lived and died and triumphed for our sake.

As Christians we try never to use the word hate. In fact, in that sentence there are two words I try “never” to use; never and hate. Never is far too restrictive a word, it is too final a word, it closes us to possibility, can-

cels opportunity for adjustment and inevitably stops the evolution of our thinking. The word hate is just, well, such a nasty, unforgiving, and unchristian word. I suspect, if you are like me, if you ever use the word hate, you immediately recant and seek forgiveness. So, forgive me the use of these words, right here and now, “I never thought I would see something as disruptive to our way of life, or potentially debilitating to our communities as COVID-19, the Coronavirus. I hate it.”

Now, if I put the previous sen-tence into more thoughtful, hope-ful language, it would read like this, “At no time did I think I would see something as disruptive to our way of life, or potentially as debilitating to our communities as COVID-19, the Coronavirus, I dislike it im-mensely.” The point is simply this: the way in which we see things and express ourselves gives us the opportunity to move beyond and anticipate better outcomes—even in times of stress, discomfort, and uncertainty. Of course, in times of such societal and global disruption we should be aware, we should be extraordinarily careful. The Greeks would say, “have eyes all around your head.” We should take every precaution, but not stop believing, nor let the exhilaration of anticipa-tion abandon us.

We live in uncertain times. No one knows when life will return to normal, whatever the new normal will be if it is not like the old nor-mal. Every condition of extreme disruption, the Spanish Flu, World Wars I and II, 9/11, the fall of Berlin Wall, the end of the Cold War have all created disruption—both nega-tive and positive. Disruption is what causes stress; uncertainty is what

we dislike immensely. We are living in these conditions right now, but fear not! As stated in Proverbs, “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” When we get beyond crisis and the total disruption to our daily lives, we must be able to resume life quickly, with a healthy spirit, and a joyful heart.

The Coronavirus numbers are becoming quite alarming, and ex-perts indicate we are still some weeks away from peak, which means the numbers will become even more alarming. Despite the headlines, we must persevere, we must retain the conviction of our hearts that better days are ahead, we must hold onto our core belief in Him to see us through. We must anticipate the joy of the Risen Lord. Do this, while remaining vigilant, staying safe, and we will exult at our reunion.

When we learned of the Fed-eral, State and Local mandates re-stricting public gatherings, effec-tively closing our Cathedral to the congregation on Sunday, March 15 we mobilized to ensure our Stew-ards, families and friends could con-tinue to worship from their homes. In less than five days we outfitted

the Cathedral with permanent live streaming capability. Thankfully, the message to worship via live stream broadcast is getting out to our Community. Recent trending indicates our live stream is touching an average of 300-400+ people. We are very grateful for that support.

Forgive me, but I must spend some time on the direct effect the Coronavirus is having on our Ca-thedral. With the doors of our Ca-thedral and Chapel closed to the public, since March 15, our collec-tions have suffered. The Cathedral will be closed to the public at least until Sunday, May 10 based on the Governor’s current emergency no public gathering edict. By this time, assuming we can re-open on May 10, we will have missed 7 full weeks, including Palm Sunday (and the Palm Sunday luncheon) and the Resurrection Service. Just these missed dates—not to men-tion our Ladies Philoptochos can-celed “Palm Sunday Bake Sale,” their largest fund raiser of the year—represents over $35,000 in lost income to our Cathedral.

Άσχετα, αν καμμιά φορά, εμείς μα-θημένοι στα αυτονότητα και την αυτάρκεια μιας αλαζονικής πίστης το ξεχνούσαμε. Η σχέση με τον Θεό δεν είναι μιά γνώση. Είναι κοινωνία, μυστή-ριο καρδιάς, πυρακτωμένη σχέση αγάπης που τε-λεσιουργείται μέσα στη σιωπή.

Ο Θεός επέτρεψε να ζήσουμε αυτή τη δοκιμα-σία. Γιατί; Ας προβληματισθούμε, ναι!Ας μη βια-στούμε όμως να απαντήσουμε και ιδιαίτερα εκείνοι που με ένα τρόπο θορυβώδη, αυθάδη, προκλητικό, αλαζονικό, εξουσιαστικό, μεγενθύνουν την άπο-ψή τους λες και μπορούν να αναδειχθούν ανώτε-ροι από την αγάπη και τη δικαιοσύνη του Θεού, για να αναδειχθούν ως αρχηγοί οπαδών. «Μη λές ποτέ ότι ο Θεός είναι δίκαιος. Να λές ότι είναι φι-λάνθρωπος. Γιατί, αν δεν ήταν φιλάνθρωπος, θα είμασταν καταδικασμένοι», λέγει ο άγιος Ισαάκ ο Σύρος. Στο παράπονο δε των δικαίων ανθρώπων «εξεγέρθητι, Κύριε, ίνα τι υπνοίς»; (Ψαλμ. 42ος),

ο Χριστός δίδει την δική Του απάντηση: «ο αδι-κών αδικησάτω έτι, και ο ρυπαρὸς ρυπαρευθήτω έτι, και ο δίκαιος δικαιοσύνην ποιησάτω έτι, και ο άγιος αγιασθήτω έτι. Ιδοὺ έρχομαι ταχύ!» (Αποκ. 22, 1112).

Ο Εσταυρωμένος Κύριος μας προετοιμάζει, πρίν την Ανάσταση, να ζήσουμε το νέο σκοτάδι της γης από έκτης ώρας έως ενάτης μέσα στο χρό-νο του κόσμου. Το φως της Ανάστασης όμως είναι αυτό που φωτίζει την πορεία μας προς τα έσχατα και την αιωνιότητα. Αυτό το φως μας χαρίζει ελπί-δα, προσδοκία, αγάπη, καλωσύνη, ειρήνη, υπομο-νή, αυτοθυσία, ευαισθησία, τρυφερότητα, ανθρω-πιά. Σκορπίζει ευλογίες! Αυτό το φως διακρατεί τον κόσμο από την αποσύνθεση και τη φθορά. Φωτίζει όλη την ύπαρξη, το βίο, τη ζωή, τα εγκό-σμια και τα ουράνια. Κανένας δεν μπορεί να μας το στερήσει και να το στερηθεί. Είναι το δώρο του Πατέρα μας, η ανάπαυσή μας, η παρηγοριά μας, η χαρά μας! Πιστεύουμε στην Ανάσταση και προσ-δοκούμε την Ανάσταση. Ξέρουμε ότι ο θάνατος του Χριστού εκμηδένισε τη δύναμη του θανάτου. Και έτσι αντέχουμε! Ζούμε εν υπομονή με ελπίδα και προσδοκία. Ο Θεός και Πατέρας μας επιτρέπει τη δοκιμασία μέχρι εκεί που αντέχουμε..Και όταν τα ανθρώπινα σχήματα εξαντλούντα&iota, τότε γίνεται το θαύμα!

Οι ναοί μπορεί να είναι κλειστοί. Να μην εισο-δεύσουμε τον Εσταυρωμένο Χριστό μας, το γλυκύ Έαρ της Θεοτόκου. Ο Επιτάφιος να μη λιτανευθεί το βράδυ της Μεγάλης Παρασκευής. Να αποστε-ρηθούμε να ανάψουμε το κερί μας στο «δεύτε λά-βετε φως». Να δοξάσουμε εν χορώ στο μυστήριο της Σύναξης τον Αναστάντα Κύριο. Κανένας όμως δεν μπορεί να μας εμποδίσει να είμαστε γρηγο-ρούντες. Να ψάλλουμε μαζί με την Εκκλησία τις Ακολουθίες που θα παρακολουθούμε στην τη-λεόραση, στο ραδιόφωνο, στο διαδίκτυο. Κανέ-νας δεν μπορεί να μας στερήσει τη χαρά να ψάλ-λουμε τους ανδρώδεις και ελπιδοφόρους ύμνους της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας, όπως τους μάθαμε και τους σιγοψάλλουμε. Κανένας δεν μπορεί να μας στερήσει τη δυνατότητα να προσευχόμαστε με αγαπητική διάθεση για όλους εκείνους τους ευ-λογημένους ανθρώπους της ιατρικής επιστήμης που δίνουν τη μάχη στην πρώτη γραμμή με τους «θρόμβους αίματος» της αγωνίας να κυλούν στο

πρόσωπό τους και τους πάσχοντες ασθενείς. Να ψελλίσουμε με την ελπίδα της Ανάστασης ένα λόγο προσευχής για τους κεκοιμημένους.

Φέτος έχουμε ενώπιόν μας μιά σωτηριολογική πρόκληση. Θα έλεγα καλύτερα μία βιβλική παιδα-γωγική πρόσκληση της χάριτος που καταρρίπτει μέσα από τη δοκιμασία και το θάνατο τα αυτονόητα στη σχέση με τον Θεό και τον άνθρωπο: να ξανα-ζήσουμε την ευθύνη μας ως πολίτες και ορθόδοξοι άνθρωποι, και όχι ως άποικοι του κόσμου. Να επα-νεκτιμήσουμε τις ανάγκες μας, τις προτεραιότητές μας, τις επιλογές μας, τα κριτήριά μας, την αλήθεια μας, να διαλεχθούμε αυθεντικά με τον εαυτό μας. Να κάνουμε το σπιτικό μας κατ’ οίκον Εκκλησία. Να ζήσουμε ως άνθρωποι του Θεού το γεγονός ότι «η λύπη ημών εις χαράν γενήσεται». Να επα-νεκτιμήσουμε δοξολογικά πόσο πολύτιμο δώρο είναι να μετέχουμε της Θείας Κοινωνίας αλλά και της κοινωνίας των αδελφών μας που στερούμα-στε, πόσο πολύτιμο είναι το καθημερινό δώρο της υγείας, πόσο όμορφη είναι η αίσθηση της γιορτής, πόση αξία έχει να συναθροιζόμαστε με αγάπη και ειρήνη, να χαιρετάμε ο ένας τον άλλον, να δίνουμε τα χέρια, να αγκαλιάζουμε τους ανθρώπους μας, να έχουμε τη δυνατότητα να εκκλησιαζόμαστε, να μπορούμε να συνοδεύσουμε στην τελευταία του κατοικία τον άνθρωπό μας, πόσο ο ήχος της καμπάνας μας θυμίζει την πνευματική και ευχαρι-στιακή διάσταση της ζωής μας, την ποιότητα μιάς άλλης βιοτής, και μας προσκαλεί στο ναό, για να ζήσουμε την ομορφιά της πίστης και της παράδο-σής μας, να βιώσουμε το μυστήριο της αγάπης του Θεού. Μένουμε σπίτι και μένουμε στην αγάπη του Θεού! Αυτές τις άγιες Μεγάλες ημέρες ατενίζουμε μόνο τον Κύριό μας με σιωπή. Καιρός του ποιήσαι τω Κυρίω!

Μόνο έτσι μπορούμε να διαχειρισθούμε τη λύπη αυτού του καιρού, διότι «ανέστη Χριστός και ζωή πολιτεύεται» και η αγάπη αποδιώχνει τον φόβο. Αν ο καθένας μας αρχίζει να παραπονείται, να μεμψιμοιρεί, να χαρακτηρίζει, θα πρέπει να σκεφθεί αν μπορεί να συνειδητοποιήσει την ευθύ-νη του ως πολίτης και να ανακαλύψει ως πιστός, πίσω από τα φαινόμενα, την ουσία αυτής της βι-βλικής δοκιμασίας στην πορεία προς τα έσχατα, του μαρτυρίου και της μαρτυρίας, του πόνου και του θανάτου, του δώρου της ζωής.

Άλλωστε, οι πληγές που θα αφήσει πίσω της αυτή η δοκιμασία θα συνεχίσουν, επειδή υπάρχει η δύναμη της μνήμης, να προκαλούν την αυθεντι-κότητα και τη συνείδηση όλων μας, αλλά ιδιαίτε-ρα των ηγετών όλου του κόσμου που θα κληθούν να αναμετρηθούν με την ευθύνη και την αλήθεια τους με μέτρο και κριτήριο τον σταυρό της δοκι-μασίας και του πόνου των λαών της γης. Στο ση-μείο αυτό η κρίση θα είναι αμείλικτη! Γιατί ζυγός της δικαιοσύνης είναι o Σταυρός του Χριστού.

Τα μέτρα που επεβλήθησαν μας καλούν σε μιά καθημερινή άσκηση που δεν είναι έξω από την πραγματικότητα της ασκητικής διάθεσης της Εκ-κλησίας, η οποία μας προσκαλεί να σκεφθούμε ότι ο Θεός πάντοτε και σήμερα, νυν και αεί, μας καλεί, προσευχόμενοι αδιάλειπτα με δάκρυα και ταπείνωση, να ξεπεράσουμε την μία και μοναδική αμαρτία μας: την αδιαφορία μας για τον Αναστη-μενο Χριστό. Αυτή ας είναι η πασχάλια παράκλη-σή μας!

Ήμαρτον, Κύριε, εις τον ουρανόν και ενώπιόν Σου! Κύριε, ελέησον! Δόξα τω Θεώ!

Καλή Ανάσταση! Καλή υγιεία! Ο Θεός μαζί μας! Χριστός ανέστη! Αληθώς ανέστη!

He had often entered Jerusalem before, but never with so much at stake. Why were earlier visits

different? They came early in the dispensation, when he was not very well known. The time of his Passion had not drawn near. He mixed in without distinction, keeping his identity under wraps. Had he appeared in this mode earlier, he would not have been held in high esteem. He would only have excited them to greater anger. But by now he had given them suffi-

cient proof of his miraculous power. The cross was at the door. He now makes himself more conspicuous. He does not hesitate to do things that were likely to inflame them. All this happens with dramatic im-pact. It might have been possible for these things to have been done earlier, but it was neither profitable or expedient. Upcoming News and Events at the Cathedral

Metropolis of Boston Announces Major Donation to Many Parishes to Assist During The COVID-19 Crisis

During this difficult time of the COVID-19 pandemic, His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios has been assuring the Clergy and Faithful of the Metropolis of Boston of his Archpastoral love and the full support of our Metropolis to assist its Parishes with resources which help guide and as-sist ministry during this time.

Metropolitan Methodios informed many small and mid-sized communi-ties throughout the Metropolis that they will be the recipients of a gift of love in the form of a financial donation by the well-known philanthropists and dedicated lay leaders, John and Effie Lagadinos and their family. Mr. Lagadinos contacted Metropolitan Methodios and offered this extraordi-narily generous manifestation of true Christian stewardship.

This donation comes at a time when our Parishes, for safety reasons, have closed their doors to our worshiping congregations. As a result, our Com-munities have lost income from candle and weekly collections. The Laga-dinos financial assistance is meant to offer a temporary relief from this sudden loss of income while parish leaders work to implement effective online giving platforms which will serve many Communities moving for-ward. Hopefully the Lagadinos gift will encourage other brethren to em-ulate their sterling example.

In his Archpastoral message of unity Metropolitan Methodios recently wrote:

“With the grace of Almighty God, we will get through these chal-lenging times united as a Metropolis family. Let us continue praying for our doctors, nurses, hospital personnel, our policemen and fire-fighters, as well as our civic leaders who are at the forefront of this war against the ‘invisible enemy’. Let us pray ceaselessly, ‘Lord of the Powers be with us, for in times of distress we have no other help.’”

Νέα και επερχόμενες εκδηλώσεις του Καθεδρικού Ναού

Για τους Πιστούς Κληρικούς και τους Λαϊκούςτης Μητροπόλεως της Βοστώνης

Οι τελευταίες εβδομάδες ήταν ιδιαίτερα ανησυχητικές για όλους τους Αμερι-κανούς, όπως και για τους πολίτες σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο καθώς αντιμετω-πίζουμε μαζί τη θανατηφόρα πανδημία, γνωστή ως Coronavirus. Βασιζόμενοι στους αυστηρούς περιορισμούς ως προς τις συγκεντρώσεις περισσοτέρων από 250 ατόμων που ορίστηκαν στη Μασαχουσέτη από τον κυβερνήτη Baker και τους κυβερνήτες της Νέας Αγγλίας, έστειλα μια ποιμαντική επιστολή, με την οποία ενθάρρυνα την ακύρωση των Λειτουργιών, αφίνοντας την τελική από-φαση στον εκάστοτε ιερέα και στο ενοριακό συμβούλιο κάθε κοινότητος. Η απόφαση αυτή είναι σε συμφωνία με τις αποφάσεις της Εκκλησίας της Ελλά-δος και της Εκκλησίας της Κρήτης. Ο Coronavirus δημιουργεί έναν πρωτοφανή δημόσιο κίνδυνο. Κανένα άτομο δεν είναι ανοσοποιημένο στη μόλυνση. Ως εκ τούτου, αυτό που αναμένεται από τη Μητρόπολη και τις Ενορίες της είναι να ανταποκριθούμε με υπευθυνότητα προς όφελος όλων των συνανθρώπων μας. Εμείς οι Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί πρέπει να προστατεύσουμε την υγεία μας και την υγεία των οικογενειών και των συμπολιτών μας.

Ας προσευχηθούμε για εκείνους τους αδελφούς που έχουν αφιερώσει τη ζωή τους στους τομείς της υγείας, της ιατρικής, της νοσηλείας και της έρευνας. Ας ενδυναμωθούμε καθώς αντιμετωπίζουμε αυτήν την επιδημία πανδημία. «Ο Κύ-ριος των Δυνάμεων είναι μαζί μας, γιατί σε δυσχερείς περιόδους δεν έχουμε άλλη βοήθεια».
