Jung’un psikoloji dünyasına kazandırdığı “arketip” terimi, psikoloji literatüründe, algılamamızı örgütleyen, bilinç içeriklerini düzenleyen, değiştiren ve geliştiren yapılar olarak tanımlanmaktadır.

Jung arketipleri kolektif bilinçaltının çekirdek yapıları olarak ifade eder.

Jung, mitlerin arketiplerin temsilcileri olduğunu söylemiştir. Dolayısıyla mitlerde ve mitsel öykülerde gördüğümüz karakterlerin ve olay örgülerinin her birinin bir arketipe tekabül ettiğini söyleyebiliriz.

Kolektif bilinçaltı dünyanın neresinde olursa olsun insanın benzer ihtiyaçları benzer şekilde gidermesini açıklayan bir terimdir. Buna göre, insan bilinçaltında yer alan ve temel ihtiyaçlara dayanan bazı davranış, kişi ya da olaylar mitik dönemden, hatta yaratılıştan bu yana ortaklık arz eder.
