Gospel (John 21:1-14)

After this, Jesus revealed himself againto his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Togetherwere Simon Peter, Thomas calledDidymus, Nathanael from Cana inGalilee, Zebedee's sons, and two othersof his disciples. Simon Peter said tothem, "I am going fishing." They said tohim, "We also will come with you." Sothey went out and got into the boat, butthat night they caught nothing. When itwas already dawn, Jesus was standingon the shore; but the disciples did notrealize that it was Jesus. Jesus said tothem, "Children, have you caughtanything to eat?" They answered him,"No." So he said to them, "Cast the netover the right side of the boat and youwill find something." So they cast it, andwere not able to pull it in because of thenumber of fish. So the disciple whomJesus loved said to Peter, "It is theLord." When Simon Peter heard that itwas the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped intothe sea. The other disciples came in theboat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, draggingthe net with the fish. When they climbedout on shore, they saw a charcoal firewith fish on it and bread. Jesus said tothem, "Bring some of the fish you justcaught." So Simon Peter went over anddragged the net ashore full of onehundred fifty-three large fish. Eventhough there were so many, the net wasnot torn. Jesus said to them, "Come, have breakfast." And none of thedisciples dared to ask him, "Who areyou?" because they realized it was theLord. Jesus came over and took thebread and gave it to them, and in likemanner the fish. This was now the thirdtime Jesus was revealed to his disciplesafter being raised from the dead. "Thisis the truth. Peace be with you.

Month of MaryThe month of May is the "month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated toOur Blessed Lady," and it is the occasion for a "moving tribute of faith and love whichCatholics in every part of the world pray to the Queen of Heaven. During this monthChristians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their heartsan especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, thebenefits of God's mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance" (Paul VI:Encyclical on the Month of May, no. 1). This Christian custom of dedicating the month ofMay to the Blessed Virgin arose at the end of the 13th century. In this way, the Church wasable to Christianize the secular feasts which were wont to take place at that time. In the16th century, books appeared and fostered this devotion. The practice became especiallypopular among the members of the Jesuit Order - by 1700 it took hold among theirstudents at the Roman College and a bit later it was publicly practiced in the Jesus Churchin Rome. From there it spread to the whole Church.
