  • Dear Esteemed Guests, On behalf of the Alpha Gamma Lambda Chapter (The Harlem Alphas) of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., I thank you for supporting the Liv ing The Dream: Awards and Scholarship Brunch. Our commemorative event is held annually to recognize members of academia that make a positive difference by tirelessly cultivating and educating students in urban communities. Their unwavering efforts and pedagogical philosophy of maintaining high academic expectations coupled with an attitude of life-long learning serves to ensure the success of our youth. This year, to complement the public recognition of dedicated educators, we have included several scholarships that assist high school students and adults with rising tuition costs. All of which, enables the urban community to further climb the socio-economic ladder despite lifes challenges and seemingly unforgiving circumstances. Our chapter takes pride in volunteering to help mentees complete high school and continue to attain higher academic achievement. The Harlem Alphas are committed to the Young Achievers Mentorship Program that we operate in conjunction with the New York Metro Chapter of The Links. Our program provides our young achievers with valuable intangibles, such as: self-respect and comportment; oratorical skills; etiquette training; and anti-gun violence and anti-domestic violence training in connection with conflict resolution methods. To complete the 360o empowerment program, we conduct interactive lectures on how to be extraordinary, leadership, careers and college fairs, financial literacy, and college bound programming (college tour, essay writing workshop, SAT prep and more). We thank our anonymous scholarship sponsor a Washington, D.C. firm for the generous financial support to help make this event a success. In the words of Bro. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., We must accept finite disappointments, but never lose infinite hope. Again, we thank you for partnering with us to build future leaders, renew lives and fulfill dreams. Warm regards, John Burnett | President Alpha Gamma Lambda Chapter (Harlem Alphas) Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

  • To the parents, students, high school counselors, Harlem community, Links, Alpha Brothers and the Pan Hellenic community, THANK YOU for the overwhelming support of the Go To High School, Go To College Young Achievers Program.

This is my second year as Director of Education and it has been an amazing experience. Last year there were 40 students on average attending the 20 sessions this year we had up to 105 students. These students come out 2 to 3 times a month on their own merit, with ex-ceptional energy and overwhelming enthusiasm. So often we see negative images of young Black and Latino males and it is refreshing to see these positive young men operate with a level of excellence. These young men are our future and they inspire me to be extraordinary.

From the Anti Gun Violence Seminar, Etiquette dinner, College Prep Night, Feeding the Homeless to the Famous Oratorical Contest, everyone learns something new at our ses-sions. We are building future leaders with the Go To High School Go To College Young Achiever Program and changing lives one session at a time.

The education team has expanded to include a scholarship component for the community lead by our scholarship chair Latif Brown. So in addition to the laptop computers, wireless printers and scholarships for our seniors we now can offer non-YA students opportunities to receive scholarships as well. Latif Brown brings a great deal of expertise from working in the field of higher education at Columbia University that will benefit not only our program but the Harlem community as well.

  • ABOUT ALPHA PHI ALPHAHISTORY

Alpha Phi Alpha is the first intercollegiate, Greek-letter Fraternity founded for African-Americans. Since its founding on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, more than 150,000 members have been initiated into the Fraternity. The organizations national programs date back to 1919 when Alpha Phi Alpha introduced its Go-to-high School, Go-to College campaign to increase the education level of the African-American community. The Fraternity subsequently took the lead in the African-American voting rights struggle and coined the nationally famous phrase: A Voteless People is a Hopeless People as part of its effort to register minority voters. Today, Alpha Phi Alpha continues its commitment to the community through the Fraternitys Education and Building foundations that provide scholarships to outstanding students and shelter to underprivileged families. Demonstrating the vision necessary for the next millennium, the Fraternity has dedicated itself to training a new generation of leaders with national mentoring programs and partnerships designed to ensure the success of our children and our future.

    MISSION

The objectives of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. are to stimulate the ambition of its members to prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the cause of humanity, freedom, and dignity of the individual; to encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood; and to aid downtrodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic and intellectual status.

  • ABOUT ALPHA GAMMA LAMBDA

    HISTORY

The roots of Alpha Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. lie deep in the history of Eta Chapter of Colum-bia University, New York, NY. In 1926, Eta Chapter consisted of both undergraduate and graduate membership. However, some graduate brothers, were of the belief that a graduate chapter would greatly increase activity of the older brothers. It was felt that their interests, were somewhat different from those of the younger brothers.

On December 23, 1926, a group of brothers from Eta, including its immediate Past President, Attorney Peyton F. Anderson, who was also Eastern Region Vice President, and organized Alpha Psi Chapter with Attorney Myles A. Paige as temporary President; James Fladger as Secretary; and E. P. Roberts, M.D. as Treasur-er. The first major decision of the chapter was to send two del-egates: Bros. James Fladger and Rev. J.Raymond Henderson to the 19th General Convention, which was held in Richmond,

Virginia on December 27, 1926. The decision at that convention concerning the nomenclature of graduate chapters resulted in changing the name of Alpha Psi. Shortly after the convention in 1927, the members of Alpha Psi, met at 355 West 145th Street, New York City - the home of Brother James C. Thomas, Assistant District Attorney - to formulate a new name. It was at this meeting, that Alpha Gamma Lambda was founded.

The spirit of Alpha Phi Alpha was indeed very high that evening, while the brotherhood feasted on an elaborate supper. Brother Paul Robeson, destined to become a legendary and world-re-nowned figure, sang several musical selections. The tradition of supper or repast following each Alpha Gamma Lambda Chapter meeting, has continued to this day. In February 1927, the old charter was returned and a new charter was issued. The following brothers signed the charter: Myles A. Paige, Esq. Peyton F. Anderson, Esq. Lamar Perkins James E. Fladger Jewel Eugene Kinckle Jones W.T. Andrews W.P. Hayes Gerold F. Norman Edgar F. Henderson James C. Thomas, Esq. J. Edward Lowrey, M.D. Paul Collins Lucien M. Brown, M.D. James S. Watson, Esq. Thomas B. Dyett, Esq. Louis R. Middleton, D.D.S. G.W. Strickland Clarence Richardson.

  • On behalf of all of us at the New York Republican State Committee, congratulations to all of todays honorees and scholarship recipients!

Our thanks also go out to the chapter president, John Burnett and his fellow members of the Alpha Gamma Lambda Chapter (Harlem Alphas) of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., for your dedication and hard work for the important cause of promoting educational op-portunity and promulgating the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our Party shares Dr. Kings belief that a strong education is the first rung on the ladder of upward social mobility. Access to a quality education is the great civil rights issue of our time. Too many of our underprivileged and minority youth are trapped in failing schools. This is an injustice, and as Dr. King said from a Birmingham jail cell, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Family, education and hard work are the keys to living the American dream. With that foundation, anything is possible.

Our best wishes go out to all Living The Dream Brunch participants on this special day.
