AHEPA Family Annual Scholarship:

Two scholarships are awarded at $1000 each. Applicants must be of Greek descent. The first

scholarship is awarded to a student currently in their first year at a university or community

college (if you are currently in your last year of high school, please wait until next year to

apply). The second scholarship is awarded to a student continuing his/her graduate studies at a

university or community college (currently at least in second year and may be a post-graduate

Ο Σύλλογος Αρκάδων «Θεόδωρος Κολοκοτρώνης» διοργανώνει γεύμα την Κυριακή της

Τυρινής, μετά το τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας, στο Κοινοτικό Κέντρo. Τιμή εισιτηρίου: 20

δολάρια για ενήλικες, 12 δολάρια για παιδιά 6- 12 ετών και δωρεάν για παιδιά κάτω των 5 ετών.

Today, the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society will honour Saint Philothea with an Artoclasia.

Laganes ‘Lenten fasting bread’

The Arcadian Association of Ottawa “Theodoros Kolokotronis” is once again

selling traditional “Laganes” in celebration of Clean Monday. Sales will take place

today at our Cheesefare Sunday Luncheon at the Banquet Centre.

Arcadian Association – Cheesefare Sunday Luncheon –Today The Arcadian Association invites everyone to come and join us for lunch TODAY, immediately

after Divine Liturgy at the Banquet Centre to celebrate the “Apokreo” Cheesefare Sunday.

Traditional “Macaronada” with trimmings, salad, homemade tyropita, and galaktobouriko for

dessert will be served. Tickets are $20 for adults, $12 for children 6 - 12 years of age, free for

children 5 and younger.

Due to the Family Day long weekend Dance School classes will not be held

tomorrow night. The Church and Community offices will be closed tomorrow,

February 19th re-opening on Tuesday morning.

Ladies Knitting Group-Wednesdays 12:00 – 2:30 p.m.

The Greek Ladies Philoptochos are knitting. Everyone is welcome. Never knitted? You are

welcome to come and learn or just stop in for fellowship. The group meets on Wednesdays from

Epistle of St. Paul: Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4 Make your vows to the Lord our God and perform them.

Verse: God is known in Judah; his name is great in Israel.

Brethren, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the

night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and

put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not

in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in

quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision

for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes

over opinions. One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only

vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who

abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him. Who are you

to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he

stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for God is able to make him stand.

The Gospel Reading: St. Matthew 6: 14-21

The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father

also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will

your Father forgive your trespasses.

"And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they

disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you,

they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash

your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in

secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust

consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures

in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break

in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

Forgiveness

CHEESE-FARE SUNDAY

Cheese-Fare Sunday, is Forgiveness Sunday and the “Expulsion of Adam from the Paradise of Bliss.” By now we know that man was created for paradise, for

knowledge of God and communion with Him. Man’s sin has deprived us of that

blessed life and his existence on earth is exile. Christ, the Saviour of the world

opens the door of paradise to everyone who follows Him, and the Church, by

revealing to us the beauty of the Kingdom, makes our life a pilgrimage toward our

heavenly Father Land. Thus, at the beginning of Lent we are like Adam.

Lent is the liberation of our enslavement to sin, from the prison of “this world.”

The Gospel sets the conditions for that liberation. The first one is fasting—the

refusal to accept desires and urges of our fallen nature as normal, the effort to free

ourselves from the dictatorship of flesh and matter over the spirit. To be effective,

however, our fast must not be hypothetical, a “showing off.” We must “appear not

unto men to fast but to our Father who is in secret.” The second condition is

forgiveness. -“If you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also

forgive you.” The first break through the fortress of sin is forgiveness: the return

to unity, solidarity and love.

Για τους Ορθόδοξους Χριστιανούς, η περίοδος της Μεγάλης

Τεσσαρακοστής που, εφέτος, αρχίζει στις 19 Φεβρουαρίου, είναι μία

περίοδος προετοιμασίας για να υποδεχτούν την μεγαλύτερη γιορτή της

Χριστιανοσύνης, το Άγιο Πάσχα. Εφέτος, το Άγιο Πάσχα θα γιορταστεί

στις 8 Απριλίου.

νηστεία, προσευχή, διαλογισμό, μετάνοια και συμμετοχή στα Ιερά Μυστήρια της

Εκκλησίας, όπως η Εξομολόγηση και η Θεία Κοινωνία.
