Silver Gala – 10 Φεβρουαρίου – Έχουν πωληθεί όλα τα εισιτήρια

Σας ευχαριστούμε για την εξαιρετικά θετική ανταπόκρισή σας στο Silver Gala που

διοργανώνεται επ’ ευκαιρία της συμπλήρωσης 25 χρόνων υπηρεσίας του πατρός Αλέξανδρου

στον ιερό μας ναό. Ο πατήρ Αλέξανδρος συμφώνησε στη διοργάνωση αυτής της τιμητικής

εκδήλωσης με την προϋπόθεση ότι όλα τα κέρδη να διατεθούν υπέρ της αγαπημένης μας

Κοινότητας και του ιερού μας ναού. Είμαστε στην ευχάριστη θέση να σας ενημερώσουμε ότι

πουλήθηκαν όλα τα εισιτήρια.

Η Νεολαία γιορτάζει την 25η επέτειο υπηρεσίας τού πατρός Αλέξανδρου στον ναό μας –

Γιορτασμός Αποκριάς: 11 Φεβρουαρίου 12 μ.μ. Για να δοθεί η ευκαιρία και στους νέους να

γιορτάσουν την 25η επέτειο υπηρεσίας τού πατρός Αλέξανδρου στην Κοινότητά μας, ο

Ελληνικός Αθλητικός Σύλλογος Οττάβας, το χορευτικό συγκρότημα «Οδύσσεια» και η GOYA

διοργανώνουν μία ημέρα ψυχαγωγίας, ως συνέχεια της εκδήλωσης “Silver Gala”. Η Κοινότητα

θα προσφέρει χυμούς, καφέ και τσάι αμέσως μετά τη Θεία Λειτουργία. Ελάτε για να

γιορτάσουμε μαζί το καρναβάλι με μουσική, παιχνίδια, ποδόσφαιρο και άλλες δραστηριότητες.

Οργανώστε τη δική σας ομάδα από άτομα της οικογένειάς σας ή από φίλους όλων των ηλικιών

για έναν φιλικό ανταγωνισμό. Η είσοδος είναι 5 δολ. το άτομο με, τουλάχιστον, 4 άτομα ανά

ομάδα. Τα έσοδα θα διατεθούν για τις ανάγκες των ομάδων νεολαίας. Θα απονεμηθούν βραβεία

στις νικήτριες ομάδες. Καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης θα διατίθεται γεύμα που θα

Ο Σύλλογος Αρκάδων «Θεόδωρος Κολοκοτρώνης» διοργανώνει αποκριάτικο γεύμα την

Εορτασμός της Μνήμης των Τριών Ιεραρχών - Αρτοκλασία και Γεύμα - ΣΗΜΕΡΑ

Σήμερα, το Ελληνικό Σχολείο θα τιμήσει τους Τρεις Ιεράρχες με αρτοκλασία και, εν

συνεχεία, με γιορτή στο Κοινοτικό Κέντρο. Ο Σύλλογος Γονέων και Κηδεμόνων θα δώσει

το ετήσιο γεύμα τα κέρδη του οποίου θα διατεθούν, όπως πάντα, για τις ανάγκες του

Ελληνικού Σχολείου. Το εισιτήριο είναι 25 δολ. για τους μεγάλους, 12 δολ. για

παιδιά 6-12 ετών και δωρεάν για παιδιά κάτω των 6 ετών.

Epistle of St. Paul: 2Timothy 3: 10-15

My mouth shall speak wisdom and the meditation of my heart shall

TIMOTHY, my son, you have observed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in

life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions, my sufferings,

what befell me at Antioch, at lconion, and at Lystra, what persecutions I endured; yet

from them all the Lord rescued me. Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ

Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go on from bad to worse,

deceivers and deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have

The Three Hierarchs – Artoclasia and Luncheon TODAY

Today, the Hellenic School will honour the Three Hierarchs with Artoclasia and a

Luncheon hosted by the Parents & Guardians Association (PGA) at the Banquet Centre.

This is the main fundraising event for the PGA and the Hellenic School. Tickets are $25/

adults and $12/children aged 6-12 years (all children under 6 are free).

The next Hellenic Kaleidoscope program, televised on Rogers Cable channel 22 in

Ottawa, will be aired on Monday, January 29th at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, February 3rd at

9:30 a.m. In this edition our viewers can see highlights from the Ladies Philoptochos

Vasilopita Luncheon and news of our Community.

Philoptochos Society- General Assembly–February 4th

The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society of Ottawa will be holding a General Assembly on

Sunday, February 4th following the Divine Liturgy in the Church Hall. All ladies of the

Church-Community who are interested in finding out more about Philoptochos are

welcome to attend. A light lunch will be served, courtesy of the Philoptochos Society.

The “Jeanne Rosemary Georgiles Foundation Scholarship”

The foundation provides two scholarships of $1,000 each to students who have graduated

from High School (Grade 12) in 2017 and entered University as full time students. The

application deadline for the scholarships is February 2, 2018. All applicants must be

members of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa. Detailed information and application

Laganes ‘Lenten fasting bread’ The Arcadian Association of Ottawa “Theodoros Kolokotronis” is once again selling

traditional “Laganes” in celebration of Clean Monday. Sales will take place on Friday,

February 16th from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday February 17th from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m.

in the Senior’s Centre and final sale on Sunday February 18th at our Cheesefare Sunday

SOLD OUT Due to the overwhelmingly positive response to the Silver Gala celebrating Father Alex's 25th

anniversary as our Parish Priest, we must announce that this event is now sold out. As you

may know, Father Alex agreed to this honour as a fundraiser for his beloved Church-

Community and we extend sincere thanks to all those who have sponsored, donated and have

their tickets to attend. In addition, all of our parishioners will have an opportunity to

congratulate Father Alex after the Liturgy on Sunday, February 11th. Apokries Winter Carnival & Youth celebration with Fr. Alex - February 11th at

by the HCO. On Sunday, February 11th, our Community is offering complimentary juices,

coffee and tea during “Coffee Hour” with Fr. Alex in our Banquet Centre, as the Ottawa

Hellenic Athletic Association (OHAA) in partnership with the Odyssey Dance Troupe and

GOYA are proud to present the Apokries Winter Carnival. Join us for an outdoor

Carnival day with music and games including soccer, toboggan pull, jenga and obstacle

Arcadian Association – Cheesefare Sunday Luncheon –February 18th The Arcadian Association invites everyone to come and join us for lunch on Sunday,

Greek Orthodox Education:

The Need for an Earnest Introspection

Our history here in Canada spans over a century. We left our homeland, carrying

with us the eternal values and ideals of Hellas. We promised to preserve our Hellenic

heritage, along with our Orthodox faith. It is useful to pause for a moment and honestly

examine the pressing issue of Greek Orthodox education in Canada.

As a rule, our forbearers kept their promises. They remembered and honoured the

mother’s farewell curse conveyed by the verse: “But if you deny your country, which

everyone adores, may your life be filled, wherever you go, with thorns and weeds.”

So, what has happened in the course of the over one hundred year history of

Hellenism in Canada?

Unfortunately, Hellenic traditions and customs have eroded back in Greece.

Many people do not live out their Orthodox faith in their daily lives, if they have not

altogether apostasized from the faith. They do not consider Orthodoxy as the path to

salvation. Some do not even believe in life after death. Regrettably, the newest

immigrants from Greece have imported these ideas with them to Canada.

For the Greek Orthodox community to be preserved in Canada, access to quality

Greek Orthodox education is essential. Let us consider, in a sincere manner, what we

have done on this front.

Despite the many financial hardships they faced, the first settlers from Greece

organized Greek Orthodox schools in Canada. An illustrious example is the "Socrates"

Greek Orthodox School in Montreal which was founded at the beginning of the 20th

century.

Gradually, the idea of having Greek Orthodox day schools was abandoned. In-

stead, the after-school and Saturday Greek school programs were promoted as viable

alternatives. Yet, the honest truth is that these schools cannot provide our children with a

suitable education.

After the 1960s, Greek-Canadians began to revisit the idea of founding Greek

Orthodox day schools, but not throughout all of Canada. Greek Orthodox day schools

exist only in Montreal and Toronto, and continue to work quite well.

Since neither the Greek Canadian community nor the Greek Orthodox faith can

survive without accessible and quality Greek Orthodox education, let us ask ourselves if

everyone is doing their part in the promotion of Hellenism and Orthodoxy. I invite

everyone to examine their conscience and answer these important questions honestly and

responsibly.

Do the Metropolitan and all the clergymen give themselves wholeheartedly to the

advancement of Greek Orthodox education? How much of their time do they dedicate for Greek

Orthodox education? How much passion and zeal do they exhibit? Are the Communities responsi-

ble for delivering Greek Orthodox educational programs at a local level doing their part? When

discussing Greek Orthodox education, is there an effective and positive working relationship

between the Parish Priest and Community Council? Does the Community unequivocally invest in

Greek Orthodox education? Or do we remain superficially content with our inadequate

after-school or Saturday Greek Orthodox school program as to avoid dealing with the real issues?

Let us now turn our attention to the parents. Do the parents believe that Greek Orthodox

education is necessary for their children? Do they understand that without Greek Orthodox

education, their children will be neither Greek nor Orthodox? How much do they care for Greek

Orthodox education, and how many efforts have they devoted to its advancement?

Finally, we come to the subject of the teachers. Are there qualified teachers for Greek

schools in Canada? Do the few remaining teachers seconded from Greece faithfully work in

pursuit of Greek Orthodox education, or are they merely here to earn a second salary? Do our

Communities hire teachers who are committed to quality Greek Orthodox education? Do the

teachers give their best efforts for Greek Orthodox education? Can they be compared to the

teachers in Canadian day schools? Our children – the students – live all day in the Canadian day

school system; thus, when they attend Greek school, it is only natural that they compare the

quality of both learning experiences. What do they find? Are we making a positive impression?

These are the things that those in charge of our Communities, our Priests and all of us must

ponder very carefully.

To put the matter succinctly, we can say that in Canada we have two distinct categories of

schools: (1) Greek Orthodox day schools and (2) after-school and Saturday Greek school

programs. If we examine things sincerely and honestly, we will find that most students of Hellenic

background are generally not attending either category of school. Moreover, the pedagogical

activities that are being implemented in the after-school and Saturday Greek Orthodox schools are

not at the level they should be. What should we do?

Should we be disillusioned? No. I call on all of us to roll up our sleeves, from the

Metropolitan, to the Priests, to the Community Councils, to the Greek Education committees, to

the teachers and parents. Let us come to the understanding that we will not survive as a Greek

Orthodox community in Canada without accessible quality Greek Orthodox education. Once we

truly comprehend and assimilate this fact, we will begin to address the problem. We should do

more for our Greek Orthodox education, honestly and earnestly. Only in this way will we be

worthy of our Greek Orthodox roots and the glorious history of our ancestors. Only in this way

will the Greek Orthodox community in Canada not only preserve itself but also flourish. I call on

both myself and everyone else to the front line, in order to successfully tackle the challenge of

Greek Orthodox education.
