These interesting derivatives serve as thickeners, emulsion stabilizers and suspending agents in aqueous and dilute alkaline media. The fact that their solubility characteristics remain unaffected throughout a broad temperature range indicates for these newer cellulose ethers a tremendously enhanced value in industry. Their excellent film- forming properties also make them valuable in sizings and coatings, which are extremely stable to heat, light and bacterial action. They are currently offered in a range of viscosity types: those of low viscosity for solutions of high solid concentrations such as sizings and coatings; the high viscosity for its effectiveness as a thick- ener and suspending agent. Both Carboxy- methocel S and Carboxymefhoce7 A are inert, tasteless, odorless, colorless. Beyond the properties which these products have in common, each has certain individual proper- ties, most significant of which are those concern- ing solubility. Carboxymethocel S is soluble in hot or cold water. Carboxymethocel A is insoluble in water but soluble in dilute solutions of many alkaline reagents. Both are insoluble in most organic solvents and are unaffected by oil or grease of vegetable, animal or mineral origin. Because of these fundamental differences in solu- bility characteristics, these materials have be- tween them great versatility of usefulness, in- cluding a wide variety of applications in the paper, paint, textile, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and other industries.
