Reactions 1080 - 3 Dec 2005 Interferon-β-1a First report of systemic lupus erythematosus: case report Approximately 32 months after starting interferon-β-1a 12MU twice weekly for multiple sclerosis, a 47-year-old woman developed malaise, arthralgia, muscle pain and oral ulcers. She received corticosteroids and her symptoms resolved. Six weeks later, malaise recurred, with arthritis in her wrists, feet and ankles, and she reported thoracic pleuritic pain. Examination showed joint swelling. Laboratory investigations showed moderate lymphopenia, positive antinuclear antibodies and detection of antihistone antibodies. She was diagnosed with drug-induced systemic lupus erythematosus. Interferon-β-1a was discontinued and her symptoms resolved. She remained well at last followup.
