Harold D. Cooley (D-N.C). The Joint Atomic Energy Committee is continuing its probe into the Opera- tions of the Atomic Energy Commission. Current interest centers on uranium re- ported missing from the Argonne Na- tional Laboratory and the high costs of constructing the plutonium plant at Hanford, Wash. Rep. Priest's compromise National Science Foundation Bill (H.R.4846) has been reported out of committee. It can now be considered by the House of Representatives. Revived interest in establishing a Quatermaster Corps research labora- tory is noted in the introduction of a bill by Rep. Plumley (R-Vt.), authoriz- ing $1 million to establish a laboratory at a location to be selected by the sec- retary of defense. The House Committee on Banking and Currency reported favorably on S.1433, a bill to permit private interests to enter the tin smelting business. The construction, operation, and main- tenance of a rare and precious metals experiment station at Reno, Nev., has been approved b} r the House Committee on Public Lands. Imposition of the same standards which are applied to commodities used domestically may be extended to items exported under the provisions of an amendment to the Food, Drug, and Cos- metic Act. Such an amendment has been approved by the House Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee. The same committee approved a bill to charge importers with the costs incurred by the Food and Drug Administration in supervising relabeling of imported articles. The fertilizer subcommittee of the House Committee on Agriculture stated that adequate domestic fertilizer nitro- gen supplies for the coming year depend on continued operations of the three Armj'-operated plants and limiting ex- ports by the Army on its own account and for the ECA to the nitrogen produced in these three plants.
