barbadensis
• Hundreds of Aloe species exist, Aloe vera being
the most commonly used in food/cosmetics
• Defined as product containing acemannan (β-1-4
acetylated glucomannans) (positive ID test) by IASC (see certifications)
Processing Aloe
• Whole Leaf
– leaf is ground/macerated
– enzyme treatment to break down cellulose
– activated carbon treatment to remove aloin
– filtered => whole leaf juice
• Whole leaf perceived as “more natural”
• …or “less pure”
Processing Aloe
• Inner Leaf (inner fillet)
– rind removed before processing
– Rinsing, activated carbon treatment
– inner gelatinous material crushed => inner leaf juice
• Inner leaf perceived as “more processed”
• …… or “more pure”
• Some evidence bioavailability enhancement is
improved with inner leaf
Ultimately – a marketing decision
Processing Aloe
• Processing aims to remove the aloe latex inside
the rind
