The concept of peace is one that differs among people and cultures. It may mean personal tranquility, happiness in the family, and a sense of inner contentment — or it may mean a situation of safety where basic human needs are met. However we define peace, it is a goal that can be achieved through service.

In Rotary, service is much more than a sideline or an occasional pursuit. It is a way of life. It is an approach that emphasizes consid-eration and caring for others, and leads to harmony among people.

Through embracing service in all aspects of our lives, we foster a spirit of sharing, find goodwill for others, and choose peace.

In the 2012-13 Rotary year, peace will be our focus and our goal. I will ask all Rotarians to actively work for Peace Through Service, beginning with every individual, family, club, district, region, and nation.

A belief in the power of service lies at the very heart of Rotary. By making service our prior-ity, we put the needs of others above our own and transform our perspective. We empathize more deeply with the difficulties of other people; we feel a greater drive to reach out, to do what we can to help others live more happily. We become more generous with our time and resources, and more open to new ways of thinking. Instead of trying to change others, we recognize that everyone and everything has something to teach us — and every day, there are new ways for us to grow.

Through service, we become more tolerant of our differences, and more grateful for the people in our lives. Our sense of gratitude drives us to understand others better and to see the good in everyone. Through better understanding, we learn to respect others. With mutual respect, we live with others in peace.

Our Rotary service fosters peace in many ways. In our clubs and our districts, we work to bring health, safety, and human dignity to communities around the world. As individuals, we are inspired to value cooperation over competition, and the common good over personal gain. Through self-reflection, we recognize that none of us is perfect and that each of us has something to learn from others.

The motto that is unique to Rotary, Service Above Self, describes the highest form of ser-vice. It is a path that anyone can walk — a path that Rotarians have built, and that the whole world can follow. It is a path that leads to greater kindness and contentment, toler-ance and understanding. When we embrace Peace Through Service, we strive for a greater peace for ourselves, and for our world.

ROTARY CLUB OF LARNACA - KITION

The Rotary Club of Larnaca-Kition was established in the summer of 1991 and it officially became member of Rotary International on November 14 of the same year. The Emblem of the Club is the Cyclopean Walls of ancient Kitium, which are considered to be one of the most important archaeological sites in Cyprus.

The Rotary Club of Larnaca - Kition since its establishment has a course very rich in activities which on the one hand comprise a historical consignment and on the other hand a guarantee to better tomorrow for the Rotary. The podium of the Club has been honored by distinguished speakers, Rotarians or not, with speeches of scientific, professional, social, historical and national content.

The Club has given special emphasis in the encouragement and strengthening of Service as the basis of every profession by awarding prizes to Professionals, Business men and the Working people who have distinguished themselves through dedication in their profession.

In the sector of education the Club has donated books to the Public Library of Larnaca, to the Community Library of Livadhia and also books, book shelves and computers to the front line village of Troulli. The Club has also established the annual awarding of prizes to students of the Lyceum schools of Larnaca, including the American Academy, who have excelled aca-demically. It has also granted a number of scholarships of £1 .000 each to needy college or university students from the city or district of Larnaca.

In the sector of health it organizes every year blood donation for the needs of the blood bank of the Larnaca General Hospital, as well as the donation of medical and other equipment such as camp beds used by the mothers who need to spend the night next to their aching child. In addition, the Club undertook the medical expenses of an eye surgeon to go to Sudan to oper-ate on needy patients so they can regain their vision. In the sector of environment the Club has so far carried out a number of tree plantings in places designated by the Forestry Department and has created, in cooperation with the Ro-tary Club of Larnaca, the Rotary Forest of Peace and Friendship at Rizoelia area. Also, many times, it has organized clean up campaigns at which members and friends of the Club cleaned up the Larnaca shore as well as the Pattichion Park.

The Club makes every effort to be an aid-giver to the suffering and it should be stressed that this is not done only at Christmas and Easter. Every year it offers meals and financial aid to different old peoples homes in Larnaca and children with special needs.

During the crisis in Lebanon the Club sent with a U.N. ship aid, which included medicine, child food and pampers, blankets and clothing, which were distributed by Lebanese friend Rotarians and at the same time supported the effort of the Doctors of the World to Lebanon with financial aid.

LARNACA

The town of Larnaca is the oldest living town of Cyprus. Its name is derived from the word “larnax”, which means tomb or sarcophagus, a great number of which are to be found in the area. Unlike Salamis, Amathus, Alasia, Engomi and other ancient cities of Cyprus, which were destroyed by earthquakes or other causes and were abandoned by their inhabitants, Larnaca, from the time of it’s founding, lived and still lives on the same location. Present- day Larnaca is built over the ruins of the ancient kingdom of Kitium or Kition which was founded by Kittim the grandson of Noah.

From the early dawn of history Larnaca attracted many visitors. Some came as colonizers, like the Mycaeneans, others as peaceful traders, like the Phoenicians, those mysterious traders from ancient Lebanon, and others as invaders and conquerors like the Persians, the Romans, the Lusignans, the Venetians, the Turks and the British.

Without laboring on historical points too heavily, it is worth noting a couple of great men of Kition: Zeno, the founder of the Stoic School of Philosophy in Athens, was born here; St. Lazarus, raised • from the dead by Jesus, came to live his second life here, becoming the first Bishop of Ki-tion and is still revered as the local Patron Saint of the town.

Moving swiftly through a fascinating history to more modern times, the British rule of Cyprus in 1878 found modem Larnaca a leading • port and the diplomatic capital of the Island.

At the end of the Second World War, Larnaca as a port was overtaken in importance by Famagusta and Limasol. Now, once again, after a long decline into obscurity, Larnaca has climbed rapidly back to tourist and commercial importance, with its modern port, its marina, its international airport, its industries and its many beautiful hotels and other catering es-tablishments.

Its central geographical position on the south coast (just 10 mm. from the International Air-port, yet outside the cone of noise of landing and departing aircraft) makes it an ideal base from which I one can easily explore the rest of the Island. Larnaca is one of the islands most popular tourist resorts. On completion of revamping the phoenikoudes seafront, which is the biggest tourist infrastructure project ever attempted in Cyprus, and with the plans of renovating its physical extension to the south, Piyale Pasa, and reconstructing the Larnaca -Dhekelia road, Larnaca takes a step forward in its attempt to develop to the maximum possible extent its tourist potential.

LARNACA

The Cote d’ Azure style promenade of the town will thus take on a bright new air, behind the ageing palm trees on the beach. With the yachting marina which is also to be extended soon, at one end and the pleasant strip of bars, restaurants, tavernas and modem hotels extending along this spectacular sea front, Larnaca presents a unique picture of an oriental setting with plenty of the modern amenities and comforts that present day tourists search for.

The commercial and shopping centre of the town lies behind the promenade. All along the coast of Larnaca extend beautiful sandy beaches which provide safe bathing for families relaxing with young children, and is doffed by beautiful modern and luxurious hotels.

Last but not least Larnaca has a substantial cultural activity. The Larnaca-Famagusta As-sociation of Friends of Classical Music and the Cultural Department of the Municipality of Larnaca, in close cooperation, work out a very rich programme of artistic events such as art exhibitions, recitals, concerts, festivals, lectures, etc. These take place at the Municipal Theatre of Larnaca, at the Lamaca Fort, the open-air garden theatre on the sea front and the Pattichion Amphitheatre within the Salt Lake Park of the town. This beautiful open-air theatre can seat over 2,500 spectators.

The Church of St. Lazarus, the Fort of Larnaca, the Pierides Museum, the District Archaeo-logical Museum, the Old Aqueduct known as “Kamares”, the Phaneromeni Church, the ruins of Ancient Kition, the Hala Sultan Tekke, the Angeloktisti Church with its famous mosaics, the Larnaca Salt Lake, the Khirokitia Neolithic Settlement, the Stavrovouni Monastery, the Agios Minas Monastery for nuns, I the village of Lefkara and the picturesque and lovely vil-lages of the Orini district of Larnaca, are sights worth paying a visit to.

THE ANCIENT KITION

To the south coast of Cyprus and underneath the houses of the modem town of Larnaca, lies the ancient town of Kition one of the oldest and, in those times, one of the most important towns on the island of Cyprus.

As recent excavations have shown, the first civilized society flourished here at around 2000 B.C. This society continued until the Middle Bronze Age, around 1650 B.C., and then for 400 years the site seems to have been abandoned.

Towards the end of the 13th century B.C. the first Achaean settlers arrived. With their culture and experience, the Achaeans revived the town and most importantly improved and refined the process of copper mining.

In 1050 B.C. the town was destroyed by a violent earthquake but was rebuilt to be inhabited for another 50 years until 1000 B.C. when the old site was abandoned in favor of moving closer to the sea.

It was not until 900 B.C. that the Phoenician settlers arrived in Cyprus and made Kition their basis for their commercial activities in the Mediterranean. The Phoenicians ruled Kition till the end of the 4th century B.C. when the Phoenician dynasty was destroyed by Ptolemy I. The Greek Macedonian King Ptolemy I, according to historian Diodoros, defeated and killed the last Phoenician King, Poumianthonas, in 312 B.C.

Zeno the founder of the Stoic School of Philosophy was born in Kition in about 338 B.C., a fact that is of great significance and pride for the people of the town of Larnaca.

The town of Kition was fortified at the beginning of the 13th century B.C. by a mud-brick wall that at intervals had four-sided towers made of hewn stones. A little later towards the end of the 13th century B.C., the Achaeans rebuilt the wall into a strong Cyclopean wall and built monumental Mycaenian temples near the copper workshops.

Two copper statuettes dating to the 12th century B.C., one representing a bearded god and the other a naked goddess are indicative of the relation that existed between the temples of worship and the copper workshops.

In the area of Chrysopolitissa Church, the Cyprus Department of Antiquities in 1962 excavated and brought to light houses dated in the period 1300 - 1000 B.C. In the yards of some of the

THE ANCIENT KITION

houses there were found chamber tombs with rich offerings, among which the well-known rhyton made of faience with scenes from hunting. Other excavated objects included Mycae-nian pottery, gold jewels, alabaster vessels and artifacts made of ivory.

These findings tell of the relations of Kition with the outside world especially with the Aegeans, Egypt and the Syro-Palestine coast countries, and are evidence of the wealth and prosperity of the town attributed, no doubt, to the exports of copper which was then the basis of the economy of the whole of Cyprus. Copper ore was transported probably from the nearby mines of Troulli and Kalavasos to Kition where at its workshops the copper was extracted and worked into copper objects and coins which were then conveniently exported from its harbor.

The Phoenician dynasty of Kition issued important series of coins mostly made of silver. Also the Phoenician temples and inscriptions found in Kition are widely known.

The ruins of ancient Kition are believed to be one of the most important archaeological sites of Cyprus, and it is with justified pride that the charter members of the new Rotary Club have decided to use Kition as the name for their Club and to exhibit the Cyclopean Wall of Kition on the Club’s banner as part of the emblem of the Rotary Club of Larnaca-Kition.

THE 4-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. ls it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. WilI it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

THE FOUR-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do

Can be applied profitably in relations with others in the home, community, business, national and international life; particularly to proposed plans, policies, statements

and advertising in business and the professions; to proposed legislation in government; to relations between

teachers and students in the schools.
