Company LOGO Biblical Counseling Slide 2 Counseling What? Slide 3 Nouthetic? [to impart understanding, to set right, to lay on the heart.] = [thoughts, purposes, desires] + [to set, put, place, fix, establish] teaching, admonition, warning, ethical and corrective instruction in regard to belief or behavior Nouthesa is any word of encouragement or reproof which leads to correct behavior Slide 4 What is Nouthetic counseling? Col 3:16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom All Christians are to teach and confront one another nouthetically Rom 15:14I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another. Paul was convinced the Roman disciples were able to nouthetically confront one another Slide 5 What is Nouthetic counseling? 1 Thess 5:12-14Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Both the leader/pastor and each other are involved in the work of nouthetic counseling Slide 6 What is Nouthetic counseling? Col 1:28-29We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. The goal of nouthetic confrontation is to present others perfect in Christ Acts 20:31So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears. It was Pauls practice to nouthetically confront Slide 7 In what manner? 1 Cor 4:14I am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you, as my dear children. The goal of nouthetic confrontation is never to shame 2 Thess 3:14-15If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. We confront nouthetically as a brother, not as an enemy Slide 8 To Whom? Eph 6:4Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. We must teach and nouthetically confront our children with Gods will Titus 3:10Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. We confront even a divisive person nouthetically Slide 9 Summary Nouthetic confrontation is based on these scriptures Teaching [didasko] doesnt imply any problem, but admonish [noutheteo] always implies a problem or obstacle to overcome Nouthetic counseling presupposes the need for change in the one confronted. It is to effect personality & behavioral change This training is done in a verbal manner The purpose and motive is to benefit the other person. It is motivated by love and deep concern Slide 10 Counseling How? Slide 13 Scripture 2 Tim 3:16-17All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. The bible is a tool that is useful for all the goals of nouthetic confrontation 2 Tim 4:2Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction. Timothy was directed to use the scriptures nouthetically, so nouthetic confrontation is scriptural confrontation Slide 14 The 3 aspects of counseling The three ideas found in the word nouthesia are confrontation, concern, and change. 1. The counselee has problems resulting from sin that must be resolved Gods way. 2. These problems must be resolved by verbal confrontation using the Scriptures. 3. The resolution must be done out of love for the counselee to help him love God and enjoy Him in his life. To put it simply, nouthetic counseling consists of lovingly confronting people out of deep concern in order to help them make those changes that God requires. Slide 15 Who? There are always three persons involved: 1. The Holy Spirit 2. The Human counselor 3. The counselee Slide 16 The Holy Spirit & Counseling John 14:15-17"If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever- 17 the Spirit of truth. John 14:26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 15:26"When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. John 16:7-8Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: John 16:13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. Slide 17 Greatest Resource The Holy Spirit is the first and greatest counselor He is the ultimate resource in counseling Counseling is the work of the Holy Spirit. Effective counseling cannot be done apart from Him Slide 18 What are the Qualifications? Rom 15:14I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another. He needs (first of all) to know God's Word well: the Word of Christ must "dwell within him richly." Secondly, the nouthetic counselor needs to be full of wisdom. Thirdly, there is the essential quality of goodness. Gal 6:1Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. The fourth qualification, being helped by another Christian: "You who are spiritual." Slide 19 Counselee They are people like you and I They have a problem They have to confess any sin Slide 20 3 Dimensions of Problems 1. Presentation problems Answers the question, why are you here? e.g. Im depressed, I an overweight, I dont have any friends, Nobody knows the real me (Often presented as a cause when really an effect) 2. Performance problems This is the cause of the symptoms or presentation problem e.g. I havent been much of a wife, I eat when I get emotional, I get angry and yell often, I dont open up or get real (Often presented as an effect when really a cause) Slide 21 3 Dimensions of Problems 3. Preconditioning problems This is the root of the performance problem e.g. I avoid responsibility whenever the going gets tough, I dont give my problems over to God, I dont process anger well, I dont trust people (Often presented as an effect when really the underlying cause, the habitual response pattern, the long-standing underlying pattern of non-biblical responses, of which the performance problem is but one instance; the preconditioning problem generally does not come fully into focus until its relationship to the first two has been understood) In counseling, the three problems need to be distinguished and considered separately Take the presentation problem seriously in order to get to the deeper problems Slide 22 THEMES of SIN Genesis 3 shows this with Adam & Eve 1. Rejection of God 2. Rejection leads to serious consequences 3. We run, in order to hide and avoid, or to cover up 4. We also shift blame to others Slide 23 Tools of Counseling Always give Hope Prayer is key Presupposition Detail divine knowledge Discussion (Feelings, Attitudes, Behaviors) Slide 24 Change Biblical change is the goal of counseling Ephesians 4:17-24 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Change is a two-factored process Slide 25 Elements involved in Biblical Change 1. Become aware of the practice (pattern) that must be removed (put off) Habits are comfortable, automatic & without conscious thought 2. Discovering the biblical alternative 3. Structuring the whole situation for change 4. Breaking links in the chain of sin 5. Getting help from others 6. Stressing the whole relationship to Christ 7. Practicing the new pattern (put on) 1 Timothy 4:7train yourself to be godly. Slide 26 Practicals Practicals of Nouthetic counseling Failure Factors, Donts Solution sheet Slide 27 Problem Solution Sheet What Happened What I DidWhat I Should Have Done What I Now Must Do Problem (Describe) My Response (Describe) Biblical Response (cite & explain Reference) Describe the steps that must be taken to rectify matters Slide 28 Discipling Check-list Sort out responsibilities. Get specific details. Stress what rather than why for data. Distinguish presentation, performance, and preconditioning problems. Talk not only about problems; talk also about Gods solutions. Slide 29 Discipling Check-list Check Motivation (ultimately it must be loving obedience: because God says so). Insist on obedience to God regardless of how one feels. Think through or write out an agenda Give concrete assignments at every session. (Explain how to) Check on assignments given last time Slide 30 Authority in Counseling Counselors who exercise the authority of God, are not authorities in their own right We make many kinds of statements, we must know what is biblically binding Which statements are proper and which are improper uses of counseling authority Slide 31 Authority in Counseling 1 Confess this sin to God and forsake it. 2 Sell your car and pay off the loan. 3 You must study the Scriptures and pray regularly. 4 Every morning you must read the Bible one-half hour and pray for twenty minutes. 5 One way to begin to implement the commandment to love your neighbor is to make a list of items you know will please her and do one each day this week. Slide 32 Authority in Counseling 6 You must break off that homosexual relationship today! 7 Tranquillizers will do you no good; dont take any more. 8 Your worry must go; you are going to have to learn how to focus your concern on today rather than on tomorrow. 9 Catch up on your ironing by our next time together. 10 Obey Gods command, whether you feel like it or not.
