Managing Director – CEO’s Message

T he Managing Director – CEO Demetrios P. Mantzounis stated the following, in his end-of-year message to the Group’s

Personnel:

“In 2016 the Bank, implementing its business plan, preserved its strong capital position, improved its efficiency and achieved

its goal of returning to profitability.

In December, Alpha Bank successfully completed an SME securitisation transaction, achieving medium term funding of

Euro 320 million, by placing Senior Notes to the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and

Development (EBRD) and an International Investment Bank. In addition, Alpha Bank was one of the four Greek systemic

banks to sign an agreement with the European Investment Bank for the support of SMEs and MidCaps. Both developments

confirm, yet again, the market’s trust in the Bank and its business portfolio.

The agreement reached with KKR Credit in May 2016 was a major step toward the active management of selected Wholesale

Non Performing Exposures. It should be noted that the joint venture for the management of non performing retail portfolios,

that Alpha Bank is part of, was the first of its kind to be granted a license from the Bank of Greece and is scheduled to start

operating in the beginning of 2017.

During the past year, the Bank continued to implement consistently and efficiently its Restructuring Plan, to regain

profitability and strengthen its balance sheet. In December 2016, the sale of Ionian Hotel Enterprises S.A., owner of the

Hilton Athens hotel, was concluded, in line with the Bank’s commitments to the European Commission’s Directorate-General

for Competition. The sale of our activities in Bulgaria and FYROM was also successfully concluded, in March and May 2016

respectively, further rationalising our international presence.

THE BANKΜazi

< 8 / 64 >

The Bank offered new products and services for its individual and business Customers, to facilitate electronic payments and

card transactions. The working capital account “My Alpha POS Credit Line” was created for Small Businesses. In the digital

transactions sector, the Bank introduced the new, innovative service “My Alpha wallet”, while, since April 2016, collaborating

Businesses have been able to use the “Masterpass” payments service, provided by Mastercard® on a global scale.

Paying particular attention to the health sector, the Bank also launched the “Alpha Global Medical Care” health insurance

programme.

This year, the Bonus Loyalty Programme marked ten years of successful presence in the Greek market, still ranking first in

terms of brand recognition by the general public and Customer acceptance.

Alpha Bank received a number of significant distinctions this year, including being named “Best Bank in Greece” for 2016

by the “Euromoney” financial publication, for its return to profitability and its strong capital base, at the “Awards for

Excellence 2016”. Moreover, the Bank was distinguished at the “Extel Survey 2016”, conducted to highlight the best

European financial institutions and further received important awards for its digital banking services. Alpha Bank also

received, for the second consecutive year, the “European Award for Best Practices 2016” by the European Society Quality

organisation, for upgrading the quality of its services and operations and was singled out for successfully conforming to

international data security standards.

The Bank demonstrated the same consistency in its social contribution activities throughout the year, assisting vulnerable

social groups and strengthening foundations and institutions whose work supports health, education, culture and the

environment. The “Helping Hand” programme, that provides food supplies to the poor, large families and the elderly,

continued for the fifth consecutive year. Launched in 2014, the “Together, for better health” programme has, to this day,

donated medical supplies and equipment to 20 Greek islands.

“The defacements that hurt” programme, designed to restore and preserve sculptures, landmark buildings and monuments

as well as their surrounding areas, extended its activities to Thessaloniki, with the “Let’s give back Nea Paralia its old glow”

initiative, held in collaboration with the Municipality of Thessaloniki, Anatolia College and Thessaloniki’s Y.M.C.A. Our hundreds

of Volunteers once again effectively contributed to the successful realisation of the Bank’s social contribution activities and

we thank them for their participation.

As part of the activities carried out by the Bank’s Art Collection, the exhibition “The Alpha Bank Collection. Greek Art from

1950 until today”, featuring contemporary art works, was showcased in large exhibition venues in Rhodes as well as

Rethymnon, in Crete. In 2016, the educational programmes for school students organised by the Alpha Bank Numismatic

Collection continued, along with the visits and guided tours for university students and the lectures around Greece,

while a new permanent exhibition and an educational programme for school students were launched at the Banknote

Museum of the Ionian Bank in Corfu.

The Bank further supported the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna in the prefecture of Rethymnon, the first archaeological

site Museum in Crete. At the same time, the Bank continued to offer its support to the Society of Messenian Archaeological

Studies and covered expenses related to the excavations taking place on the site of Ancient Messene.

Having repeatedly proven that it can successfully respond to these demanding times, Alpha Bank welcomes 2017.

Together, “MAZI”, we will continue our joint efforts to achieve the return to growth.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the General Management, I would like to thank you for your dedication and wish you

health, strength, progress and prosperity”.

Changes in the Board of Directors of the Bank

D uring 2016, in response to the changing landscape in the Greek banking sector and in accordance with the recent

regulatory and legal modifications, the Bank proceeded with changes in the composition of the Board of Directors.

These changes pertained to the replacement of Non-Executive Members who had been elected to the Board on the basis

of their personal contribution to various sectors of the society and economy in general. The new Members, as stipulated in

the relevant law, should possess mainly, if not exclusively, significant international expertise in the areas of banking, audit,

aspect of the real economy and market, beyond the strict banking context. Thanks to their contribution, in addition to

that of the other Members, the Bank grew considerably in the 2000s. During the last years, Alpha Bank managed to cope

with the fragile economic conditions prevailing in the country and to contribute decisively to restructuring the banking

system by conducting three successful recapitalisations from 2013 to 2015.

Mr. Minas Tanes was at the helm of Athenian Brewery S.A. (1976-2008), which he transformed into the leading company

of its sector. He is currently the Chairman of FOOD PLUS S.A. and was a Member of the Board of Directors of the Bank

the Risk Management Committee and Member of the Audit Committee while during his service he was also Chairman of the

Corporate Governance and Nominations Committee and Member of the Remuneration Committee.

Ms Ioanna Papadopoulou is the President and Managing Director of the E.J. PAPADOPOULOS S.A. BISCUIT AND FOODWARE

INDUSTRY, the largest and most profitable company of the food sector. She was a member of the Board of Directors

of the Bank from 2008 and served as a Member of the Corporate Governance and Nominations Committee and of the

Remuneration Committee.

Mr. Ioannis Lyras is the President of PARALOS MARITIME CORPORATION S.A. From 1997 to 2003 he was Chairman of the

Union of Greek Shipowners and he is currently Chairman of the Union’s Foreign Affairs Committee. He was a Member of the

Board of Directors of the Bank from 2005 while he served as a Member of the Remuneration Committee and of the Audit

Committee.

Mr. Pavlos Apostolides joined the Diplomatic Service in 1965 and was, among others, Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus,

Counselor of the Greek Embassy in Ankara and Permanent Representative of Greece to the European Union in Brussels.

In 1998 he became General Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in 1999 he was appointed Director of the

and e-Governance in the Caretaker Government. He was a Member of the Bank’s Board of Directors from 2004 and lately

News of the Bank’s Library

P. Cavafy is one of the most prominent Greek poets in modern times. As he spent most of his life in Alexandria, he is

often referred to as “the Alexandrian”.

The first surviving manuscript we have of Cavafy is the journal he kept on a journey to Constantinople and his first poem is

“Leaving Therapia”, written in English in 1882 during his stay in Constantinople, where the Cavafys had to move due to

nationalist disturbances in Alexandria. In 1891 he issued his first notable poem entitled “Ktistai” (Builders) and published

some of his greatest prose poems. Some of his most significant poems followed, such as “Candles” in 1893, “Walls” in 1896

and “Waiting for the Barbarians” in 1899. In 1902 he visited, for the first time, Athens, where he made the acquaintance of

the author Gregorios Xenopoulos and the poet Ioannis Polemis. In the next year Xenopoulos published a favourable article

entitled “A poet” in Panathenaia magazine, thus introducing Cavafy’s oeuvre to the public in Greece. During the period that

followed, his reputation spread and authors and poets from both Greece and abroad, e.g. Tomasso Marinetti, André Malraux,

Nikos Kazantzakis, Kostas Ouranis and Myrtiotissa, visited him at his home in Alexandria. In 1911, he wrote his wonderful

and best-known poem “Ithaka”.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.

Arriving there is what you are destined for.

But do not hurry the journey at all.

Better if it lasts for years,

so you are old by the time you reach the island,

wealthy with all you have gained on the way,

not expecting Ithaka to make you rich. (Collected Poems. Translated by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard)

The Collection of his poems includes 154 poems sanctioned by the poet himself, the so-called “Canon”, 37 “repudiated”

poems, most of which date to his youth and were written in a romantic tone and in katharevousa (the official “pure” form of

Greek used at the time), 75 “hidden” poems, discovered in his archives in finished form, and 30 “unfinished” poems.

C.P. Cavafy developed a unique method for publishing his poems: he never published a collection in book form; he opted to

publish his poems in periodicals, newspapers and annuals. The first volume of his 154 poems was published posthumously,

edited by Rika Singhopoulo.

The poet had divided his poems into three categories: the historical poems, mainly inspired by the Hellenistic era with

Alexandria in primary focus, the philosophical poems, which are instructive, and the sensual poems, filled with lyricism and

inspired by recollection and remembrance.

Cavafy’s peculiar and pioneering language and versification were mainly characterised by a blending of the “demotic”

(the form of Greek used by the people) and katharevousa (the official “pure” form of Greek) with idioms of Constantinople,

the simple, emotion-free, almost prosaic language, the edited iambic metre, the frequent use of rhyme and the particular

significance of punctuation.

The international appeal of Cavafy’s poetry is attested by the multiplicity of its translations in English, French, German and

many other languages.

The Library Collection includes a significant number of C.P. Cavafy’ books, collections of poems, essays, etc.

C.P. CAVAFY CURRICULUM VITAE

Constantine Cavafy was born in Alexandria on 29 April 1863. Both his parents,

Peter-John Cavafy, rich cotton merchant, and Charicleia Photiades, were natives

of Constantinople but settled in Alexandria in 1850. His family’s standard of living

was high but in 1870 his father’s death led to the gradual dissolution of the

family firm and to their financial decline. Sometime later, C.P. Cavafy with his

mother and brothers settled in England, initially in Liverpool and then in London,

where they stayed until 1876. When his family returned to Alexandria,

C.P. Cavafy attended the “Hermes” lyceum and at the age of 18 he started

compiling a historical dictionary. His stay in Alexandria was cut short by the

disturbances occurred due to a nationalist military movement. Cavafy’s family

took refuge in Constantinople, at his mother’s family home. In 1885 they

returned definitively to Alexandria, where Cavafy worked initially as a journalist

and then as a broker. From 1892 he served as a clerk at the Third Circle

of Irrigation at the Ministry of Public Works of Egypt. In parallel he started

publishing poems and prose poems in newspapers and periodicals. After his

permanent settlement in his beloved Alexandria, which he rarely left,

C.P. Cavafy travelled abroad only five times: to London, Paris and Athens.

He died in Alexandria on 29 April 1933 at the age of 70.

Special Olympics would not have been possible without the devotion and enthusiasm of thousands of volunteers, who choose to dedicate some of their personal time to care for others.

Alpha Bank sponsored the Special Olympics Hellas events that took place in Athens, Hania, Alexandroupolis and Corfu, as part of the December 5th celebration.

Nocturne 1996Acrylic on canvas 140x120 cm

ARhodes Branch (640)

Kostas Paniaras, Nocturne, 1996Acrylic on canvas 140x120 cm

lthough he is one of the most genuine representatives of abstract art in Greece,

in the mid-1990s Kostas Paniaras made a powerful comeback to figurative canvas

art. The painting belonging to the Alpha Bank Art Collection is part of the artist’s Nocturne

series, which dates to that period and is an evolution of his Sea Landscapes, created

during 1988-1995. The sea and its depiction is what brings these works together.

Motivated by the sea landscape, so familiar to Paniaras because his birthplace, Kiato in

Korinthia, which borders the sea, was his sole source of inspiration, the artist explored,

with a lyrical yet also daring approach, the boundaries between depiction and abstraction.

In Nocturne the horizon is placed high up, following the Impressionist standards, so that

the sea genuinely takes over the greatest part of the canvas surface. The colours are

dull and dark, portraying a tumultuous sea and a black sky. Intense white and gray

paintbrushes make up the sky, while the sea, almost entirely black, without any colour

variation, leaves few glimmers of white, gray and yellow. The crude, almost expressionist

style of this painting makes the audience experience the genuine emotion that the artist

himself felt when looking at the rough sea at night. Its power exceeds any realistic,

detailed approach.

Prefecture of Heraklion(Knossos)

Frame at the Heraklion Branch (661)

K nossos, five kilometres south of Heraklion, was the centre of the Minoan civilisation. Legendary King Minos dwelt there,

in an imposing palace built on a hill, next to the River Kairatos. The first Minoan palace was built around 2000 BC and was

probably destroyed in 1675 BC by an earthquake. Other buildings were consequently built and Knossos developed into a big

city. The Labyrinth (maze), one of the most important works of Daedalus, was situated in the basement of the Minoan palace.

While entering the Labyrinth was easy, leaving it was nearly impossible, because of the many corridors and turns, which usually

did not lead anywhere. According to mythology, Minos, in order to be recognised as the King of Crete, asked Poseidon to send

him a sign, to confirm the will of the gods. Poseidon sent him a bull of incomparable beauty and Minos, instead of sacrificing it

to the god, as he was obliged to do, held on to it and sacrificed another bull. To punish Minos, Poseidon made his wife,

Pasiphae, fall in love with the bull and mate with it. That is how the Minotaur was born, a monster with a human body and a

bull’s head that fed on human blood. Minos put the Minotaur in the Labyrinth, the same place where he imprisoned his enemies.

This myth naturally inspired coin engravers. The Knossos palace Labyrinth became the emblem of the city’s coins and was

depicted on their reverse over different periods of antiquity.
