COMPARISON
The b ranch seemed n eedle fine
Between me and doom
O f air born d eath;
But sun on terassed vine
and white, st ill, broken home
D rew sharp my breath.
I been there long before,
When h ope was still white bright
For life in S pain.
I d w orked there long before
When h eart an d mine said Fight
And die for S pain .
The issue there was clear;
No shad es on ly b lack or w hite,
Not grey as here.
We knew th e fearful stakes,
but doub t was lost in fight,
while here it aches.
S ent by the very shame
O f our countrys name
A C hambermaid ,
We fough t to w in or lose;
But now we have to choose
The lighter shade.

S o now if i have i must
A pseudo-soldiers cross
a total loss.
O h! May the day be cursed
That chose this end in grey
To blaze of day.
S o friend, remember if you pass this way
To pause and say:
There is a corner of a C retan L an e
for ever S pain.

SIMILARITY
The track was hard as fate,
The train w as singing:
S he must not d ie
(I d loved but not enough)
The wheels were ringing
S he cannot d ie
(I d tried but not enough)
and then I came too late.
Now prisoner, dow n in G reece,
The new is stinging.
We re down and out
(Id loved b ut n ot enough)
The goonsare grinning
of Russian rout.
(I d tried but not enough)
and there is no more peace.

S UPERFLUOUS D OCTORS
S uperfluous doctors what a phrase to rouse
D ulled prison fires to flicker with the muse
And build a b rave new w orld. There, there would b e
No families, wars, or other acts of G od
To break the Peace on E arth . No! Man would turn
From wan tom killing of his cousin s kin
To face his very foes, and S cience an d Art,
With L abour and ally, would fight and kill
Wan t and its very fears, d isease, its very roots,
S q ualor and filth an d loneliness and pain,
And then let doctors quit the centre stage
To ush er in the prophylactic age.
But death was near and h unger, and pr isoners
dreams were rare.
The d octor in S alonica sat dow n and his hair.

D UE T FO R TWO VOI CE S
My Body
A My eyes and ears, back, arms and leaden feet
S end to the B rain their neutral neural waves;
They cross the synapse, surge and meet
To etch in b lood, and w eariness and graves,
A martial chaos, gluttonous in d efeat.
B Oh , Ch rist , make memory blank.
G ive cloud in clear!
Wha t fool of b lackguard gave me eyes to see
O r ears to hear.
My Heart
A My heart is tired of war an d all its
Lonely boredom und er red capped fools,
Comma ed by steel of blitz,
With pity for the men, the patient tools,
And fear for them for me in sudden fits.

B And yet th is heart would glad ly d ie for England.
O h, C hrist, you fool, you re still that fat and filthy
fag,
O n th e touch line
S houting Up, up S chool.
My mind
A My mind can pierce the cause of war tod ay
And see the mon eyed marrow of its ills,
The way the Marxists say can see much good
can grind from m artial mills.
And can approve the end , but n ot the way.
B And so intellectual picks his doub ts,
But n ever clean ,
O h, Ch rist! D eside! C ome left or right!
Theres no room in b etween.

Of doubt, divided, blind.
How can it ease the tumult of a soul
By treating sick? By trying to b e kind ?

TH E S I NS O F TH E FATH E R S
From Wittenberg-am-Elbe came
Luther and his creed,
And John Kn ox came from him to save
Poor S cotchmen in th eir need.
And planted deep the sense of sin
in every good S cots soul,
With gaol gallows and hell-fire
he fann ed the burn ing coal.
The flames are flickering lower now ;
Its dead the creed h e built;
But seeds he sowed are with me still
A tyran t sense of guilt.
S o, Wittenberg, you gave me
The role I had to dree;
Its right th at you should save me
By dying to make me free.
