On 15th March 2011, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn visited the University of London. Her Royal Highness attended the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Thai Music Circle at Senate House, Euston.

Her Royal Highness was the principal musician and performed some classi-

cal Thai music in tribute to celebrate the eighty-fourth birthday of His Majesty the King. Also in attendance were over 400 guests from all over the UK, who were invited by the Royal Thai Embassy.

Among distinguished musicians, including the musicians of the Chula Watit Ensemble, Members of the Thai Music Circle in the

UK, and musicians of the SOAS Thai Music Group. Toward the end of the programme, The Thai Dance Academy (TDA) arranged performances such as Rambam A-Sim, Khon (Thai masked dance), etc.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn last visited Britain in March 2006, when she gave a performance to celebrate

the 60th anniversary of King Buhmibol Adulyadejs accession to the throne. On that occasion, Her Royal Highness also led the Thai Music Circle in the UK at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS, University of London.

While the clashes between the Thai-Cam-bodian armies over the imaginary border has attracted a world-wide attention and stirred nationalistic discourses from both sides, a group of young Cambodian circus artists made their recent visit to Chiang Mai, Thailand to deliver the message that war is absolutely terrible.

    Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS)

Phare Ponleu Selpak (meaning the Brightness of Art) is a creative group

(a non- governmental organisation) based in Battambang that uses arts as a tool to support community development. The idea took shape as early as 1986 in Site 2 refugee camp on the Thai border where young refugees were encouraged to use arts to overcome the trauma of war. After repatriation, all Khmer refugees returned to their homeland and in 1994, the Phare Ponleu Selpak was formally established. The three main aims of PPS are to provide local children and communities with social,

educative, and cultural services. Through education, PPS set up three artistic schools in visual arts, performing arts, and music. The circus arts forms a section of the performing arts school. Since its inaugu-rating eleven years ago, the school has already produced as many as 75 circus graduates from the three generations.

Circus Arts: A Cultural TreasureIn the sphere of performing arts, Thailand and Cambodia share many traditional art

forms including theatre, dance, and music, for example, the masked dance-drama (the Khon in Thai; the Lakhon Khol in Khmer), the grand shadow theatre (the Nang Yai in Thai; the Sbaek Thomm in Khmer), and the small shadow play (the Nang Talung in Thai; the Sbaek Tauch or Ayang in Khmer). The Siek Khmer or Khmer circus, however, is a unique art form and can only be found in Cambodia - not elsewhere in other Southeast Asian countries.

Somdej Phra Ramathibodi II died in 1529 when he was 57 years old. Then Somdej Phra Boromrajathiraj IV (Phra Artitayawong) was on the throne as the 11th king of Ayutthaya. It is said that his lineage formed the Phra-Ruang dunasty, Sukhothai. He had one son called Phra Rajadathiraj. In 1533 Smallpox spread through Ayutthaya capital, this disease caused his death. He was on the throne for only 4 Years.

After Somdej Phra Boromrajathiraj IV died, top councillors agreed to invite Phra Rajadathiraj to become the 12th king of Ayutthaya. Since he was only 5 years old, he was the youngest king on record in Thai history. So two grand ministers called Samuhanayok and Samuhakalahom were acting on behalf of the king, but only for 5 months, when Phra C h a i r a j a ( u n c l e ) r u l e r o f Pitsanulok, knew of this matter, he came down with an army and took over the throne. Phra Rajadathiraj was killed, and his uncle became king in the name of Somdej Phra Chairajathiraj.

Somdej Phra Ramathibodi II sent an army to war with Malaka twice, but did not succeed, but could make the king of Malaka who ruled Pattani, Klanton, Pahang afraid of his power over the Southern regions. This made the king of Malaka render service, yearly, to the king of Ayutthaya. Back in 1513 the king of Chiangmai, Lanna kingdom marched an army to war with Sukhothai, Somdej Phra Ramathibodi II fought back and defeated them, two years later he won Lumpang by making war with Lanna kingdom.

In the year of 1518 Somdej Phra Ramathibodi II ordered a Textbook of War Strategy to be written (Tamra Pichai Songkram), making rules for the army, he made a list of military strength, he made the rule that all people between

In 1492 Somdej Phra Ramathibodi II ordered to be made, 2 big Pagodas at the Wat Phra Sri San Pech, in his palace, to hold his father and his brothers bones. In 1499 he gave an order to build a Vihara in the Wat Phra Sri San Pech, and the year after that he founded the Buddha image called Phra Sri Son Pech and performed a ritual ceremony about it in 1503. As for literature, having said that Somdej Phra Ramathibodi II was the same person as Somdej Phra Panvasa, according to the literature of Khun Chang Khun Phan this was mentioned in the story of the dynasties.

Art Has No Boundariescontinue from page 3

Exactly when and how the art of circus came into existence in Cambodia remains unknown. Although old records were largely destroyed during wars, some

archaeological evidence reveals that the performing art form dates back more than a thousand years to the great Khmer empire.

Early evidence of Khmer circus can be found at many old temples where different circus skills such as balancing, juggling, or tightrope walking, were carved on the stone walls. Dr.Sam-Ang Sam, an ethnomu-sicologist and a leading force in preserving Cambodian performing arts, researched that the existence and wide practice of Khmer circus dated back to at least the Angkor period, from 9th to 15th centuries.

Khmer circus tradition can be particu-larly observed at ancient Khmer stone carvings on the walls of the temple at Sambaur Prey Kuk (7th century), the Bapuon temple under the reign of King Utey Tityavarmann II (1050-1066), the Angkor Wat temple under the reign of King Jayavarman VII (1181-1218). Other terraces such as the Leper King terrace and the Elephant Fighting te r race also have carv-ings of Khmer circus and m a g i c acts - balancing, juggling, s p i n n i n g t h e

wheels, walking the t ight-rope, ani-mal train-ing, and so on.

Prasat Sua Proat (Walk-ing the Tight-rope temple)

might have something to do with Khmer circus of the Angkor period. At the western corner of the northern wall on the rst level of Bayon temple, the Khmer

circus scene was presented, having a strong man on his back who is spinning a wheel with his feet; above is a group of tightrope walkers. Khmer circus has also been featured on wall-painting and fresco, for instance, at the Kampung Tralach Leu pagoda in Kampuang Chh-naing province, he added.Transmitting of Traditional Knowl-edge: From Memories to Newly CreationDuring the reign of the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979), an estimated of 2 millions Cambo dians died from execution, starvation, disease or forced labour. Old perform-ing masters were killed; those few who survived are still scared by the deep trauma. Many written records on ancient arts were destroyed leaving hardly any source of knowledge for new generations to rely on.

Circus arts in Cambodia was among many endangered art forms in need of safeguard-ing. Only recently various governmental agencies as well as non- governmental organisations are focusing on recreating the art as well as coaching new students so as to continue its practices.

On a national level, circus has been brought back to life by state schools and agencies. following the fall of Angkor during 15th century, the art of Khmer circus declined and was forgotten. In 1980, following the depose of the Khmer Rouge in 1979, the Ministry of Culture created the circus section at the School of Fine Arts, hav-ing students trained both in Cambodia and abroad on the circus art. Khmer circus artists have been performing both in Cambodia and on the international stages, Dr.Sam-Ang said.

Away from the capital, the same effort is being carried out in Battambang where a circus school is offering free training for local children as well as providing them with performing space. Khuon Det, a founder and the director of Phare Ponleu Selpaks circus school, has led the schools mis-sion to promote the Khmer circus arts to hundreds of young generation.

His rst encounter with the circus arts began when he was introduced to the world of circus by French teachers at the refugee camp and later when he established PPS where he received numerous grants to get professional training in France.

I myself learned the art of circus from abroad. But I also visited temples to study. There are no elderly people who come to say you should do this and that. But I try to mix what I have learned from abroad and inserted into traditions (= transformed them into a new art). I cre-ated my own style which I called Social Circus (it is a modernised Khmer circus art form mixed with traditional circus practices that address social issues), said Khuon Det.

Due to many wars and troubles, Cam-bodia experienced many bad things especially many ancient arts were lost. Researchers have their duty to search for what ancient people had left for us. They documented what is left and what existed in old peoples collective memories who had earlier experienced this art form and survived the Khmer Rouge.

Asked how he inspired young people to be involved in the preservation of tradi-tional art, he said two words must be considered: Development is Conservation; Conservation is Development. When we want to involve young people in the preservation of traditional art forms, we have to develop our present works by combining old peoples experiences and records from researchers, he added.

The basic knowledge of circus was borrowed from abroad due to the lack of existing evidence. But when we started training, we noticed that circus knowledge existed in Cambodia. As we see circus performs with music, music performs alongside with circus.

Khuon Det explained further the charac-teristics of Khmer circus that when we began studying about the circus history, we found that circus arts is not divided by countries but into regions, for instance, Africa has its own style, Europe and Asia also have their styles. Most of acrobatics traditions are from Asian countries.

I want to improve our circus art despite the fact that the circus group of Bat-tambang has already been recognised especially from International communi-ties. My ambition is to put the name of our circus to be synonymous with the name Battambang. So, when people think of Battambang, they would think of circus that includes art (artistic value) too.

When we say transferring of knowl-edge we dont just tell our children here you go! But we support them by giving them professional training, assisting them to adjust to society, and improve their livelihood. That is why we are trying to help troubled children. However, when we encourage them to continue practic-ing, we should be concerned about their empty stomach as well. Therefore, if there is enough placement in the market for our artists to provide their service, they and their families will survive. In turn, when artists gain energy, they will no longer worry about hunger, thus they can help transferring knowledge to the next generation, Khuon Det concluded.

My appreciation also goes to all members of Phare Ponleu Selpak especially Khuon Det and Khuon Chanreaksmey. Today, amthaipaper returns to experi-ence the cooking of our old friends at the Thai Upon Thames restaurant. We have noticed that they have made some changes to the restaurant, from design to service and food. During the ten years since Thai Upon Thames opened, the Richmond has attracted many Thai restaurants. But Khun Pu and Khun Puk continue to serve great food, and show considerable creativity with their special dishes. We particularly liked Goong Phu Kao Fai, the grilled Jumbo king prawns in marinated sauce, which

was amed at the table with brandy. There were also plenty of other gorgeous and sophisticated dishes (see the pictures). Apart from the menu, the opened plan kitchen in the restaurant impresses most diners, enabling them to explore how the chefs create dishes for them. We also thank you to Tiger Beer to get us the opportunity for revisiting our old friends again.
