ncient AlmopesOur knowledge on the Almopes and their region is depending almost exclusively on archaeology,

with the exception of one phrase in Thucydides Histories. New archaeological finds, the result of systematic excavations conducted in the area, have given us a picture of their settlements, however this paper is dealing with the issue of their ethnic identity if there had been one. The Almopes foundation myth (according to which, the Almopes were descendants of Poseidon) is a basic pa-rameter towards the investigation of their identity. Although we cannot be certain about the origins of this myth, its survival echoes that must have been familiar to the southern Greeks. The Almopes clearly distinguish themselves from the Temenid Macedonians, however they do not belong to the same ethnic group with the Paiones, as archaeology has proved. They were probably an indigenous tribe, conquered by the Macedonians, during the expansion of the latter in the 6th century. For the Macedonians, Almopia was a spear-won land, therefore its inhabitants had to be perceived as oth-ers. This was, perhaps, one of the reasons for the survival of the Almopian foundation myth.
