Today, 100 years later, Black & Decker® is a global marketer and manufacturer of quality
products used in and around the home and for commercial applications.
With products marketed in over 100 countries and approximately half of its revenues
from outside the United States, Black & Decker®'s product lines hold leading market share
positions in their industries.
Two young entrepreneurs, S. Duncan Black and
Alonzo G. Decker, founded a small machine
shop in Baltimore, Maryland.
They called it The Black & Decker®
Manufacturing Company.
Their shop has grown beyond anything they
could have imagined.
1910
1916 - The world's first portable 1/2" electric drill
with pistol grip, trigger switch and universal
motor was developed and marketed.
1946 - A major market breakthrough was
achieved when Black & Decker®
introduced the world's first portable
electric drill for consumers.
1957 - Black & Decker® began to move outdoors
with the first electric lawn edgers and hedge trimmers
for consumers.
1961 - Black & Decker introduced the world's
first cordless electric drill, powered by nickel-cadmium cell
1968 - Black & Decker® developed
a unique power head for the
Apollo Lunar Surface Drill
to remove core samples
from the moon.
1971 - The original
single height Workmate®
was introduced.
1979 - The Dustbuster® hand-held
cordless vacuum cleaner was marketed,
creating an entirely new category
of household appliances.
1996 - Launch of the original Multi Sander.
1998 - The cordless Quattro Multi-Tool was
launched. It was awarded Millennium Product
Status by the Design Council in 1999.
2000 - The Scorpion® Handsaw/Jigsaw
continued the expansion of multi functional
products.
1999 - The Black & Decker Mouse ® Sander
was launched. Awarded the IDSA Design
Excellence Award in 2000.
2006 - Launch of our innovative
Pivot® Dustbuster® hand vac.
The product was awarded the Plus X
award for design and ergonomics.
2007 - Launch of the AutoSelect®
Technology on cordless drills.
2009 - Launch of the Black & Decker® Flexi Vac,
the only cordless hand vac with an integrated hose
that reaches like no other. Small size & Big Flexibility.
2010 - Launch of the AutoSelect® Multisander.
2011 - Launch of the Black & Decker®
