There’s a Club for That?By Dominic JandrainTechnician Writer

Th e Finance Council of KSG post-ed a revised version of the Statement of Operating Policies on the Ketter-ing web site earlier this term. It con-tains, among other things, the quali-fi cations and guidelines for clubs that are funded by KSG. Th e poli-cies clearly state that a club must advertise all events and meetings to be eligible for funding. Th e reasoning be-hind this rule is that by not advertising club meetings, clubs are depriving students the chance to participate in something that they helped fund by paying the activity fee. Although most clubs do an adequate job of advertising, many students can think of at least one club that has violated this rule at one time or another. Clubs that do not adver-tise events risk losing funding relating to that particular event or, if there has been no advertising at all, lose fund-ing altogether.

Th e Statement of Operating Poli-cies defi nes advertising as “available to the entire Kettering University population at least one week in ad-vance of the event or meeting”. While it does not specifi cally state the me-dium of advertisement, it can be as-sumed that fl yers, banners, and the

Kettering University Events Calendar are adequate, as long as they are avail-able to the entire student population.

In addition to the traditional means, there are quite a few other ways of advertising that are used fre-quently around campus. Painting the bulldog, Facebook events, and setting up tables in the Great Court or the

Pool are a few of the more popular options. However, these methods do not give all students an equal oppor-tunity to hear about the event. Not all students have Facebook accounts, so that can be ruled out. Painting the bulldog conveys only a very basic mes-sage for a limited time, as it may be

painted over within hours. Setting up tables and talking with passing students may be an effi cient way of getting new members, but as with painting the bulldog, this is only a temporary way of advertising. Just to be safe, each of the above meth-ods should be used in conjunction with banners and fl yers.

Clubs that choose not to adver-tise may be penalized. If a club does not advertise one event or

meeting, it is considered a minor of-fense, which is punished by a denial of a funds relating to the incident. If a club does not advertise at all, it is considered a serious off ense, pun-ishable by a seizure of all funds and recommendation for removal as a rec-ognized club.
