Personal Environmental MonitorFor Measurement of PM10 and PM2.5 in Indoor Air
Th e Personal Environmental Monitor (PEM) is a small, lightweight impaction device used with a personal sample pump to provide eff ective sampling of PM10 and PM2.5 in indoor air. Personal exposure is determined through gravimetric analysis for particle mass and chemical analysis for specifi c compounds.
How the PEM WorksTh e PEM consists of three major parts: cap, impaction ring assembly, and base with after-fi lter. When used with a personal sampling pump at the required fl ow rate, aerosol is accelerated through a number of nozzles in the cap. Th rough inertia, particles larger than the 50% cut-point of the sampler impact onto a greased impaction ring and can be discarded after sampling. Particles smaller than the 50% cut-point pass through the impactor and collect on a 37-mm after-fi lter. Th ere are six models of PEM available for the collection of PM10 or PM2.5 at three diff erent fl ow rates.

Th e patented* SKC single-stage Personal Modular Impactors (PMIs) are designed for the highly effi cient collection of PM10, PM2.5, or PM Coarse (10-2.5). Th e samplers are easy to use with a removable fi lter cassette and pre-oiled impaction disc. Th e 25-mm pre-oiled impaction disc mounts directly on top of the fi lter cassette and reduces particle bounce for high collection effi ciency. A 25-mm fi lter may be used as an alternate impaction substrate for optional chemical analysis of particles. Th e PMI Coarse model includes a second fi lter cassette to allow collection of particles < 10 μm, but larger than 2.5 μm.
