The Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society’s annual Vasilopita Luncheon will be held today

immediately following the Divine Liturgy at the Banquet Centre. Everyone is welcome

and encouraged to attend our first gathering of the year as one family where Father Alex

will Bless and cut the Vasilopita. Tickets are $25 for Adults, $12 for Children 6-12 years

of age, and free for Children 5 years & under.

The Three Hierarchs – Artoclasia and Luncheon January 29th

On Sunday, January 29th, 2017 the Hellenic School will honour the Three Hierarchs with

Artoclasia and a Luncheon hosted by the Parents & Guardians Association (PGA) at the

Banquet Centre. This is the main fundraising event for the PGA and the Hellenic School.

Tickets are $25/adults and $12/children aged 4-12 years (all children under 4 are

free). Tickets will be sold in advance at the Hellenic School and also at the door. The

PGA is also seeking donations of raffle prizes. If you would like to donate a prize, please

Ἀδελφοί, ἑνὶ ἑκάστῳ ἡμῶν ἐδόθη ἡ χάρις κατὰ τὸ μέτρον τῆς δωρεᾶς τοῦ

The “Jeanne Rosemary Georgiles Foundation Scholarship” - Academic year 2017-2018

The foundation provides two scholarships of $1,000 each to students who have graduated from

High School (Grade 12) in 2016 and entered University as full time students. The application

deadline for this scholarships is February 3rd, 2017. All recipients must be members of the

Epistle of St. Paul: Ephesians 4: 7-13

Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us.

Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous.

BRETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of

Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of

captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it

mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who

descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill

all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets,

some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of

ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the

faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the

measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

The Gospel Reading: St. Matthew 4: 12-17

At that time, Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into

Galilee; and leaving Nazareth He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in

the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet

Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward

the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in

darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow

of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying,

"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

BEFORE AND AFTER

There are commercials that advertise the difference a product can make by showing a

person “before” and “after” the product was used. It is an approach used especially in

the advertising of reducing diets. To sum up the difference faith and the sacraments can

make in our lives, we may use the same approach. It was, after all, the approach St. Paul

used. Before he met Christ, the story of his life was, “I do not do the good I want, but

the evil I do not want is what I do” (Romans 7:15-20). After he met Christ, he was able

to say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

Before Christ, the story of our life is: “I can’t! I can’t love my enemy. I can’t pray.

I can’t control my impulses.”

After we meet Christ in prayer and the Sacraments, we begin to live “I can” lives:

“I can control my temper. I can pray. I can love my enemies.”

It is this kind of a “before” and “after” difference that faith can make in our lives.

Thanks be to God for his inexpressible Gift of Jesus Who opened the gates of God’s

grace. “From His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace” (John 1:16).

«ΠΡΙΝ» και «ΜΕΤΑ»

Υπάρχουν διαφημίσεις που δείχνουν πώς είναι κάποιος πριν και μετά από τη

χρήση ενός συγκεκριμένου προϊόντος. Είναι μία μέθοδος που χρησιμοποιείται ιδιαίτερα

στις διαφημίσεις που αφορούν τη δίαιτα. Θα μπορούσαμε να κάνουμε το ίδιο για να

δείξουμε τη διαφορά που προκαλεί στη ζωή μας η Πίστη και τα Ιερά Μυστήρια. Κάτι

παρόμοιο έκανε και ο Απόστολος Παύλος. Πριν γνωρίσει τον Χριστό, έλεγε: «Ο γαρ ο

θέλω τούτο πράσσω, αλλ’ ο μισώ τούτο ποιώ» (Προς Ρωμαίους 7: 15-20). Μετά που

γνώρισε και ήρθε κοντά στον Χριστό έλεγε: «Πάντα ισχύω εν τω ενδυναμούντι

με» (Φιλιππησίους 4:13).

Πριν γνωρίσουμε τον Χριστό, στη ζωή μας ισχύει το: «Δεν μπορώ. Δεν μπορώ να

αγαπώ τον εχθρό μου. Δεν μπορώ να προσεύχομαι. Δεν μπορώ να ελέγχω τις αδυναμίες

μου».

Η γνωριμία μας, όμως, με τον Χριστό είναι η απαρχή του «Μπορώ» στη ζωή μας.

«Μπορώ να ελέγχω τις αδυναμίες μου. Μπορώ να προσεύχομαι. Μπορώ να αγαπώ τον

εχθρό μου».

Πριν τον Χριστό, το σκοτάδι. Μετά τον Χριστό, το φως.

Πριν τον Χριστό, η αμαρτία. Μετά τον Χριστό, η σωτηρία.

Πριν τον Χριστό, ο θάνατος. Μετά τον Χριστό, η ανάσταση και η ζωή.

Πριν τον Χριστό, ο απόμακρος Θεός. Μετά τον Χριστό,

«ο Εμμανουήλ: Μέθ’ ημών ο Θεός».

Πριν τον Χριστό, η απελπισία. Μετά τον Χριστό η ελπίδα.

Τέτοιου είδους «πριν» και «μετά» μπορεί να φέρει στη ζωή μας η Πίστη.

Ευχαριστούμε τον Θεό για το ανεκτίμητο δώρο

που μας έστειλε, τον Ιησού ο οποίος άνοιξε,

για εμάς, τις πύλες της θείας χάριτος. «Ότι εκ του

πληρώματος αυτού ημείς πάντες ελάβομεν

και χάριν αντί χάριτος» (Κατά Ιωάννην 1:16).
