HMSBellonawas a 74-gunBellona-classthird-rateshipof the lineof theRoyalNavy. Designed by Sir Thomas Slade, shewasaprototypefortheiconic74-gunshipsof the latter part of the 18th century. “Thedesign of the Bellona class was neverrepeated precisely, but Slade experimentedslightly with the lines, and the Arrogant,Rammillies, Egmont, and Elizabeth classeswere almost identical is size, layout andstructure, and had only slight variations inthe shape of the underwater hull. TheCulloden class ship of the line was also

There is some photoetch supplied for the forward bulkhead under theforecastledeck.Thishasbeeninstalledbutheisthinkingabouthowthisshouldbepainted.Afterthebackbonestructurewascompleted,hediscoveredthattherewasa4-degreetwistin the keel. At first, he attempted to correct this by soaking the assembly in water andapplyinganoppositetwist.Havingnoluckthere,thefinalsolutionwastosandtheareaonthe frames that mount the poop and forecastle decks. This reduced the apparent twistdownto1-degree,whichisunnoticeable. Chrissaidhedoesliketheinstructionssuppliedwiththiskit.

CardstockYellowSubmarine&ShipSketch–BobPenikas

Bobwrites thathehadpurchasedanew printer (Brother MFC J985DW) andwantedtotryitoutbyseeinghowitwoulddo in printing out a cardstock model.GaininginspirationfromSteveLund’sU-453he hoped to provide some comic relief byprinting a model of the Beatles YellowSubmarine. The model was downloadedfromwww.papermodelers.com and printedon57lbWausauExactVellumBristolpaper.Themodel received a protective coating ofrattle can Krylon clear acrylic prior to thebuild and then the finished model was

coastedwithFutureAcrylic. Bob also had a pen and ink sketch done inDana Pointwhile relaxing at the Bluelantern Inn. The subject is likely theOcean Institute’s full-size replicaof thebrigPilgrimimmortalizedbyRichardHenryDana,Jr.inhisAmericanseafaringclassicnovelTwoYearsBeforetheMast.Thesketchwasdated8-14-97andthetimeofdaywas4:45PM.

DutchFluytDerfflinger–DonDressel Don brought in his continuingefforts on masting and rigging theDerfflinger. He has managed to completethefore,mainandmizzenmastsandisnowin the process of installing the shrouds,staysandotherassociatedstandingrigging.The time consuming process of “rattelingdown” or installing the ratlines has beenstarted. There was some difficulty in therigging process since the instructions forriggingwere“lost”,soa littleresearchhad

Don alsomentioned that he is using a newprocedurewhile installing his ratlineswithclovehitches–heisusingElmer’swashableclearglueontheclovehitchesoncetheyare tied to make sure they do not move and/or untie, although that is not supposed tohappen with clove hitches. He also uses a large needle to help “rove” the clove hitchesthroughtheshrouds inorder to tryandgeta little “curve”betweeneachshroudwith theratline.Thereisnothingworsethanashroudbeingpulledoutofalignmentwhileinstallingtheratlines.Dondoesnotthinkthatperfectlystraightratlineslookgoodeither.

Tuna Boat La Marie Jeanne – Jean-PhilippeDalGobbo

MarieJeanneisaFrenchtunafishingboatthatoperatedbetweentheFrenchportofConcarneau inBrittanyandoff the coastofMauritainia(SouthofMorocco), typicallyduring themonthsof June toOctober. Thetripstookuptotwomonthsasthetunaaretypically far off the coast. Due to the longpassagesandoffshorefishinggroundstheseboats had to be built strong and fast. Theboatbuildingindustrythatdevelopedthesevessels started at the Sables d’Olonneshipyard in the Vendee region south ofBrittany around the 1890’s and moved to

ConcarneauandtheislandofGroixintheearly1900’s. The boat model is being built from an Artesina Latina kit in 1:50 scale. Jean-Philippe’smodelisaboatofaround115feetinlengthandcarriesacrewoftwelve.Duringfishingthewholecrewworksondeckprocessingthefishandhangingthemtodryontherack.Thehullappearstobelargelycompletewithindividuallylaiddeckplanking.Hetriedamethodofusingthreadfordeckcaulkingandusingwoodfillertosimulatetrennels.Deckfurnitureisallinplaceasfarasthekitisconcernedbutthereisnomentionofanykindofbilge pump. He found the kit plans to be bad with few instructions and pictures thatconflicted.

Mackerel SchoonerSmuggler–JimIngersoll Smuggler was an extreme clipperdesign of 67.92 gross and 64.52 net

tonnagebuiltbyDanielPoland,Jr.andCharlesC.WoodburyatGloucester,Mass.in1887forGloucesterinterests. JimismakinggoodprogressonhismodelofthemackerelschoonerSmuggler,beingbuiltfroma1:48scaleBluejacketkit. Thehullisplankedoversolidandhehasworkedtomake the hull plankingmore pronounced comparedwith the partially completed hull asreceived.Deckplankingisonandpainted,asismostofthedeckfurniture.Hehassettledon a light grey/dark grey scheme for the deck with white for the bulwarks and deckfurniturewiththehatchcoversandgratingsleftbright.Thehullisantifoulingredleadwithagreentopsidewithayellowrubrail.Jimmentionedhavingtroublestrikingthewaterlineand thatmasking for the deck detailswas hard to dealwith. Masking lets the paint rununderwherethecracksare.

HMSBounty1787–BrianStein

HMS Bounty, also known as HMArmedVesselBounty,wasasmallmerchantvessel purchased by the Royal Navy for abotanicalmission.TheshipwassenttothePacific Ocean under the command ofWilliam Bligh to acquire breadfruit plantsandtransportthemtoBritishpossessionsinthe West Indies. That mission was nevercompleted due to a mutiny led by ActingLieutenantFletcherChristian.Thisincidentis now popularly known as the Mutiny ontheBounty.TheshipwaslaterburnedwhilemooredatPitcairnIslandbythemutineers.

AnAmericanadventurerrediscoveredtheremainsoftheBountyin1957andvariouspartsofithavebeensalvagedsincethen.BountywasoriginallythecollierBerthia,builtin1784at theBlaydes shipyard inHull,Yorkshire inEngland. TheRoyalNavypurchasedher for£1,950on23May1787,refit,andrenamedherBounty.Theshipwasrelativelysmallat215tons, but had three masts and was full-ship rigged. After conversion for the breadfruitexpedition, she was equipped with 4 X 4-pounders and ten swivel guns. Her principaldimensionswere: Tons burthen: 220 26/04 (bm), Length: 90 ft 10 in., Beam: 24 ft 4 in,Depthofhold:11ft4in,Compliment:44officersandmen.(Wikipedia). Brian isbuildinghismodelofBounty in1:60 scale fromanAmati kit. Thehull isnowcompleteandthedeckshavebeenstarted.Thewaleshavebeenaproblemasthereisconflictinginformationastotheirlocationandwidth.Therailtopsontheforedeckwouldhavebeendifficult(ifnotimpossible)tobendandsowerecuttotherequiredcurve.Thekit-supplied planking is almond and has proven to be difficult to bend, tending to crack.Brian’ssolutionhasbeentouseasteamirontosoftentheplanksandthenpre-bendthemoveracoffeemug.Thepre-bentplanksarethenappliedtothehull.

Larry has discovered aninteresting product for use in makingmodelparts. TheproductiscalledBlueStuff/Oyumaru,aproductofGreenStuffWorld. The Blue Stuff is made easy toshape into a mold by placing it in hotwaterandthenpressingapatternintoitbefore it returns to room temperature.The molds can be made both singlesided and double sided depending onthe part you want to make. Once themodel is made than parts can be cast.Larryusedatwo-partepoxyputty. Theputty ismixedand thensimplypressed

intothemold,bothsides ifa3-Dpart isbeingcastandwait for theepoxytocure. Therehavetobelotsofusesforaproductlikethis.Allofthisiswaybetterexplainedbythemantutorials on the YouTube. Just go to YouTube, type in “blue stuff” and click on thesuggestionsthatappear. Thebestpart is thatallkindsofothermodelmakingtechniquesappearas follow-onsite suggestions– suchashow todohomemadephotoetch! Youcanspendhoursexploringthisstuff.

Thereareactuallytwovolumesyouobtain when you purchase thiscombinationof book andplans. Thebookitself is extremely informative in earlyDutchshipinformationandhistory. Dutchshipbuilding is fully described for the 17thcentury discussing materials used as wellasmethodsofconstruction.Thebookthengoeson todescribe the various ship typesbuilt by the Dutch. This includes threetypes of sea going ships – the Pinas, theFluitandtheCat,twotypesofcoastaltradeships, theBoyerand theGalliot, two typesof inshore vessels, the Narrow-and Wideship and the Kaag, and three types offishermenas traders, theBuss, theHookerandthePink. Boththebookandtheplanssuppliedintheportfoliowillprovideashipmodeler with all the information herequirestobuildaverygoodshipmodelofthe modeler’s choice. The informationsupplied in both the book and the plansreflect the very best information on early17th century Dutch ships with probably the best Dutch authorities alive today. The book is stronglyrecommended to all ship model builderswhodesiretobuildaDutchshipofthe17thcentury. Someof the informationprovidedin the book is shown to the left, the toppicture giving details of how they built thestern timbers. The process that the Dutchfollowed in building ships was not yourtraditional frame first method – certainlyyoucouldnotusetheHaroldHahnmethodofbuildingamodelifyouwantedtofollowDutch practice. This is explained inpictures aswell aswrittenmaterial in thebook–seethesecondphotototheleft. Itwould be a lot of fun to try and build amodelinthisway–Iunderstandthattherehave been several models built by theauthorsofthisbookusingthismethod. The second long distance honorary member of the SMA is Michel Mantin, whohappenstoliveinFrance.HeisalsoaHonorarymemberoftheROPEinJapanandisoneofthe main instigators of the upcoming ship model conference in France, which does notconflictwiththeNRGConferenceinLasVegasasfarasdatesareconcerned.

Michel is working on a LARGEmodeloftheIJNFuso,aJapaneseWWIIbattleship. A brief history of the ship(fromWikipedia): “Fusowasthe leadshipofthetwoFuso-classdreadnoughtbattleships built for the ImperialJapaneseNavy.Launchedin1914andcommissioned in 1915, she initiallypatrolledoffthecoastofChina,playingno part inWorldWar I. In 1923, sheassisted survivors of the Great Kanto

earthquake. Fuso was modernized in 1930-35 and again in1937-41, with improvements to her armor andmachinery and a rebuilt superstructure in the Pagodamaststyle. Withonly14-inchguns, shewasoutclassedbyother Japanesebattleshipsat thebeginningofWorldWarII,andplayedauxiliaryrolesformostofthewar. Fusowas part of Vice-Admiral Shoji Nishimura’sSouthernForceattheBattleofLeyteGulf.Shewassunkintheearlyhoursof25October1944bytorpedoesandnaval gunfire during the Battle of Suriago Strait.
